Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 - When the Family Comes Back Together

The hospital waiting room buzzed with noise—phones ringing, nurses calling out room numbers, stretchers rolling down hallways—but to Katie, it all faded into a distant hum.

All she could focus on was the door to Arron's room.

Mark held her hand tightly. Steve sat beside them, his arm bandaged, his face swollen from the fight. But he never took his eyes off Katie, ready to protect her from anything else that might come through that door.

Finally, a nurse stepped out.

"You can go in now."

Katie didn't walk—she ran.

Mark followed. Steve limped behind them, refusing to slow down.

Inside Arron's Room

Arron lay propped up on pillows, pale but awake. Courtney sat beside him, eyes red from crying, holding his hand with both of hers. When she saw Katie rush in, her face broke into the first real smile she'd had in days.

"Katie," she whispered.

Katie froze at the foot of the bed, tears already falling.

Arron's eyes softened.

"Monkey... come here."

Katie launched forward and climbed carefully onto the side of the bed, burying her face in Arron's chest. Arron wrapped both arms around her, wincing at the pain but refusing to let go.

"I thought I lost you," Katie sobbed.

Arron kissed the top of her head. "You'll never lose me. Not ever."

Courtney sniffled and placed a hand on Katie's back. "We're okay now. All of us."

Katie looked up at Arron, voice trembling. "I was so scared... Grandpa was... he was—"

Arron gently wiped her tears with his thumb. "I know. I know. But he'll never hurt you again."

Mark stepped closer. "She fought hard, Arron. She didn't give up."

Arron gave him a tired smile. "Sounds like my sister. And sounds like you kept her safe."

Mark blushed a little.

Steve finally entered the room, leaning against the doorway. "The old man is in custody. Maximum security. He's never getting near any of you again."

Courtney breathed out slowly, gripping Arron's hand. "Thank God..."

Steve continued, "And after reviewing the case history, there's more good news. You're safe legally. None of you will face charges. You were victims, every one of you."

Arron nodded, relieved.

"So what happens now?" Katie whispered.

Steve pushed himself off the doorway and moved closer. "Now? We heal. And we stay together."

Keith's Room

The door creaked softly as Katie peeked inside. Arron insisted she didn't have to see him, but Katie wanted to—needed to.

Keith lay there, pale and weak, hooked up to machines. But when he opened his eyes and saw her, a faint smile tugged at his lips.

"Katie..." His voice was thin. "My girl..."

Katie walked to the bed slowly, Mark and Arron behind her.

"You're really my dad," she whispered, voice cracking.

Keith nodded once, painfully. "I'm sorry I wasn't the one raising you. But Arron... he did better than I ever could."

Katie held onto his hand gently. "Arron saved me every day. And you tried to protect us too."

Keith smiled softly. "You remind me of your mom. Strong. Brave. Heart full of fire."

Katie leaned forward and hugged him, careful not to disturb the tubes. Keith closed his eyes, tears rolling down the sides of his face.

"I love you," Katie whispered.

"I love you too, sweetheart," Keith breathed.

Arron put a hand on his father's shoulder. "We're going to be okay now. All of us."

Keith nodded weakly. "Take care of each other."

"We will," Arron promised.

Back in Arron's Room

Later that night, the whole group gathered—Katie, Arron, Courtney, Mark, Jamie, and Steve. The nurses dimmed the lights, giving them space.

Mark sat beside Katie.

Courtney rested her head on Arron's shoulder.

Steve leaned against the wall, finally letting exhaustion show.

For the first time in what felt like a lifetime...

There was peace.

Katie spoke softly into the calm.

"We're a family," she said. "A real one."

Arron kissed her forehead. "We always were."

Courtney added, whispering with a hand on her stomach, "And we're growing."

Arron smiled, touching her belly gently. "Yeah... we really are."

Steve looked around the room and let out a long breath.

"You all went through hell. You deserve this."

Katie hugged Mark's arm and smiled for the first time that didn't hurt.

"Arron's safe. Courtney's safe. Keith is alive. Mark is okay. Steve didn't die."

She looked around at the faces she loved.

"And Grandpa is gone."

Arron tightened his arm around her. "Because we fought back. Because we didn't give up."

Katie nodded.

"Because we're a family."

For the first time in years—

they all felt it.

Warmth.

Hope.

And a future.

Together.
