Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 - The End of the Hunter

The forest erupted into chaos.

Steve and the old man rolled across the ground, fists and elbows smashing through leaves and mud. Katie watched, frozen with terror, while Mark pulled her backward, trying to keep her out of reach.

But the hunter—her grandfather—fought with the strength of a man who had survived far too much darkness.

He shoved Steve off him and swung his arm wide, cracking Steve's jaw.

Steve stumbled, spitting blood.

The old man smiled, baring yellowed teeth.

"You're too late, Detective," he hissed. "I was killing long before you were born."

Steve steadied himself. "And you'll die before I do."

With a sudden leap, the old man went for Steve's throat, but Steve ducked and slammed his full weight into the man's ribs. They both crashed into a tree trunk.

Katie screamed.

Mark held her tighter.

"Don't look—Katie, don't look!"

But she couldn't tear her eyes away.

The man who had haunted her life—who had murdered her father's friends, controlled John, tortured Sue, nearly killed Arron, and was now hunting them—was fighting for the last time.

And he was losing.

Steve grabbed the old man's jacket and punched him again—harder. His knuckles split, but he didn't stop.

"For Katie!"

Punch.

"For Arron!"

Punch.

"For Sue!"

The old man snarled, slipping a hidden blade from his boot.

Katie gasped. "STEVE! KNIFE!"

Steve spun just in time—the blade grazed his side instead of plunging into his stomach.

The old man lunged again.

But Mark—shaking, terrified—kicked the back of the old man's leg with everything he had.

The old man stumbled.

Steve didn't hesitate.

He grabbed the hunter's wrist, slammed him against the tree, and twisted—hard.

The knife fell.

The old man roared in furious disbelief. "You worthless children—"

He never finished the sentence.

Steve slammed him to the ground, pinned him face-first, and handcuffed his wrists behind his back so brutally the old man cried out.

Breathing hard, Steve pressed a knee to his spine.

"Your hunting days are over."

The old man spat blood into the dirt and whispered, defiant to the very end:

"You think this ends with me…? You think you've saved them…?"

Steve leaned down, eyes burning with fury.

"You're done talking."

Blue lights flashed through the trees as backup finally arrived. Officers stormed into the clearing, guns raised, shouting commands.

Katie sobbed as two officers pried the old man off the ground and dragged him away, snarling and thrashing like a rabid animal.

Mark wrapped his arms around her.

"We're safe," he whispered. "It's over."

Katie cried harder.

"No… No, Mark… this doesn't feel over…"

Steve limped toward them, blood running down his side.

But his voice was gentle.

"Katie…" he whispered. "You did it. You survived."

She threw her arms around him and cried into his chest.

"I was so scared… I thought he was going to kill us…"

Steve held her tight. "Not while I'm alive."

At the Hospital — The Final Truth

Security burst into Arron's room moments after the arrest call went out.

"It's done!" one officer shouted. "The suspect has been taken into custody!"

Courtney dropped into a chair, sobbing in relief.

Arron covered his face with his hands and cried for the first time since he was a kid.

Keith, awake in his own room, heard the news through the frantic hallway chatter.

He allowed himself one long, shuddering breath.

His father—

The man who ruined every piece of his family—

Was finally done.

Keith whispered to the empty room:

"Sue… I kept my promise."

He closed his eyes, tears slipping down his pale cheeks.

Back in the Woods

Paramedics checked Katie and Mark, wrapping blankets around their shoulders. Steve stood beside them, watching as officers loaded the old man—still cursing and thrashing—into the back of a police van.

Before they shut the doors, the old man turned his head and smiled at Katie.

A horrifying, bloody smile.

"This isn't the end, Monkey."

Katie flinched as the doors slammed shut.

Steve stepped forward. "Don't listen to him. He's going away forever."

Katie looked up, eyes filled with fear, anger, and exhaustion.

"Can we go to Arron now?" she whispered.

Steve nodded.

"Yeah. Let's get you home."

Mark took Katie's hand as they walked out of the woods together.

For the first time in years, Katie didn't look back.

Because the monster who hunted her family…

Was finally the one being caged.

And everything she loved was waiting for her at the hospital.
