Chapter 33 - The Room That Wasn't There

The stranger's footsteps faded into the corridor.

One step.

Two.

Then nothing.

Silence returned to the Seventh Chamber like a curtain dropping after a performance.

But something felt wrong.

Not the usual ancient-secret-world-ending wrong.

Something quieter.

Stranger.

The chamber lights dimmed slightly, casting long shadows across the stone floor. The rotating platform in the center had stopped moving completely now, frozen like a clock that had forgotten time.

Four pedestals still glowed.

Bronze.

Emerald.

Gold.

Crimson.

Yet none of us were looking at them anymore.

Because the man's last words were still echoing in my head.

"Last time… you failed."

Tae-jun suddenly clapped his hands loudly.

"Alright!"

Everyone jumped.

He looked around nervously.

"…No one's talking, and that's worse."

Hae-in leaned against a pillar.

"You want a conversation?"

"Yes."

"Preferably one where the universe isn't collapsing."

He pointed dramatically toward the corridor.

"Strange mysterious guy shows up."

He raised another finger.

"He knows everyone's names."

Another finger.

"He says the world already ended once."

Another finger.

"And then he leaves like a villain from a drama episode."

He looked around the room.

"…Did I miss anything?"

Hae-in crossed her arms.

"Yes."

She pointed at me.

"Your ring almost exploded."

I looked down at my hand.

The bronze ring had dimmed again, but faint heat still lingered against my skin.

It hadn't reacted like that before.

Not even when the chamber opened.

Not even when the Warden spoke.

But when that man looked at me—

The ring had burned like it was alive.

Beside me, Seo-yeon was still holding her grandmother's journal tightly.

She hadn't spoken since the stranger left.

But I could feel the tension in her posture.

Her gold ring shimmered faintly in the chamber light.

Ara nodded slowly.

"And more than that."

She looked at me.

"He knew you."

I rubbed the back of my neck.

"Apparently I ruined the world in a previous life."

Tae-jun raised a finger.

"To be fair, we don't know that yet."

He thought for a moment.

"…But statistically speaking, it does sound like something you would accidentally do."

"Thank you for the support."

The Warden chuckled quietly from his pillar.

"You're all focusing on the wrong problem."

Seo-yeon turned toward him immediately.

"Then tell us the right one."

The Warden gestured lazily toward the chamber.

"You assume he came here to warn you."

"He didn't."

"Then why come?" Director Kang asked.

The Warden's smile faded slightly.

"To check something."

Ara's eyes narrowed.

"Check what?"

The Warden slowly turned his head.

And looked at the chamber wall behind us.

"…If the Archive had already changed."

Everyone followed his gaze.

At first, I didn't see anything unusual.

Just ancient stone.

Symbols carved into the surface.

But then—

The lights flickered.

And something strange happened.

A section of the wall… shifted.

Not physically.

Not like a door opening.

It was more like the stone itself forgot it was supposed to exist.

The wall blurred.

And behind it—

A doorway appeared.

None of us had seen it before.

Tae-jun blinked slowly.

"…That was not there."

Hae-in nodded.

"Definitely not."

Seo-yeon stepped closer.

"Did anyone else feel that?"

"Feel what?" I asked.

She touched her temple.

"Like… something moved inside my head."

Ara stared at the doorway.

"That's impossible."

Director Kang looked pale.

"No."

He whispered.

"…It isn't."

The Warden sighed.

"Well."

"That answers his question."

Tae-jun crossed his arms.

"…Which question?"

The Warden smiled faintly.

"Whether the Archive had begun rewriting itself."

Nobody spoke.

Because none of us liked how that sounded.

Seo-yeon looked back at the corridor where the stranger had disappeared.

"You're saying he came here just to see if this door appeared?"

The Warden nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because this room wasn't part of the original design."

Tae-jun raised his hand slowly.

"Hold on."

He pointed at the doorway.

"You're telling me there's a secret room inside the secret underground archive that protects ancient rings?"

"Yes."

"…Of course there is."

Ara stepped forward cautiously.

Her crimson ring flickered faintly.

"The energy coming from there… feels different."

Not ancient.

Not powerful.

Just… strange.

Seo-yeon moved beside her.

"Like what?"

Ara hesitated.

"…Like memory."

The word made my chest tighten.

I stepped closer to the doorway.

Something about it felt familiar.

Not visually.

But instinctively.

Like standing in front of a place you've been before… but can't remember when.

Tae-jun whispered behind me,

"If a monster jumps out I'm running first."

Hae-in nodded.

"Same."

Seo-yeon ignored them.

She leaned slightly toward the opening.

Inside was darkness.

But not complete darkness.

Soft light flickered deeper inside.

Like an old projector.

The Warden crossed his arms.

"Well?"

"You were the one curious about answers."

Seo-yeon sighed.

"Why does every answer involve walking into mysterious rooms?"

Tae-jun shrugged.

"Because if we didn't, the story would end."

"That's not comforting."

She stepped inside.

Of course she did.

Ara followed immediately.

Then Hae-in.

Tae-jun looked at me.

"…After you."

"Why me?"

"You're the protagonist."

"Who decided that?"

"Literally the universe."

I sighed and stepped through the doorway.

The air inside the room felt different.

Warmer.

Dust floated lazily in the light.

And the moment I entered—

I froze.

Because the room wasn't ancient.

It wasn't stone.

It wasn't mysterious ruins.

It looked like…

An apartment.

A normal apartment.

A couch.

A wooden coffee table.

Bookshelves.

A lamp glowing softly beside a chair.

It looked like someone had taken a modern living room and buried it beneath the earth.

Tae-jun stepped in behind me.

"…What."

Hae-in stared at the couch.

"Is this… IKEA?"

Ara looked around slowly.

"This makes no sense."

Seo-yeon walked deeper into the room.

Her expression had changed completely.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

She stopped in front of a bookshelf.

"…I've been here."

Everyone turned toward her.

"You what?" Tae-jun asked.

She shook her head slowly.

"No… not physically."

Her fingers brushed across the shelf.

"But I remember this place."

Director Kang examined the walls carefully.

"These photographs…"

Framed pictures hung across the room.

Not ancient paintings.

Modern photographs.

People laughing.

Walking through cities.

Standing beside oceans.

But every single photo had one thing in common.

The same seven people appeared in all of them.

Just in different places.

Different times.

Different clothes.

Ara's voice became very quiet.

"…That's us."

My stomach tightened.

She was right.

The photos showed us.

Seo-yeon.

Ara.

Hae-in.

Tae-jun.

Director Kang.

Even the Warden.

And me.

Tae-jun stared at one picture.

"…Why am I wearing a Hawaiian shirt in this?"

No one answered.

Because the date printed at the bottom of the photo made my heart stop.

August 17, 2049.

Thirty years in the future.

Seo-yeon slowly picked up a notebook from the table.

The cover was worn.

The handwriting on the front looked strangely familiar.

She opened it carefully.

Read the first line.

Then froze.

Tae-jun leaned over her shoulder.

"What does it say?"

Seo-yeon's voice was barely above a whisper.

"…It's your handwriting."

I stepped closer.

"What?"

She turned the notebook toward me.

And I felt the blood drain from my face.

Because she was right.

The handwriting was mine.

The first sentence read:

"If you're reading this, it means the timeline has reset again."

The room went silent.

Tae-jun slowly sat on the couch.

"…I liked the ring story better."

But my eyes were locked on the notebook.

Because the second line was worse.

Much worse.

It read:

"And if Ji-hoon hasn't remembered everything yet… we're already running out of time."

Behind us—

The doorway slammed shut.

And the lights in the strange apartment flickered.

As if the room had just realized we weren't supposed to be here yet.
