Chapter 36 - When the Lights Go Out

Darkness.

Not the normal kind.

Not the kind where your eyes slowly adjust and shapes begin to form.

This was… absolute.

Like someone had erased light itself.

For a second, I couldn't even tell if my eyes were open.

Then—

A sharp crash echoed somewhere in the room.

Tae-jun's voice cut through the darkness.

"Okay! That's not good! That's definitely not good!"

"Everyone stay where you are," Director Kang said, his voice controlled but tense.

"Like we have a choice," Hae-in muttered.

Something brushed past my arm.

I flinched instinctively.

"Relax," Seo-yeon whispered.

"It's me."

Her voice grounded me instantly.

"Don't move," she added.

"As if I was planning to explore blind."

Another low rumble passed through the walls.

Not violent.

Not destructive.

But heavy.

Like something large shifting… just beyond reach.

Future me's voice came from somewhere ahead.

"Listen carefully."

For some reason, even in complete darkness, I knew exactly where he was standing.

His presence felt… sharp.

Like a blade in the air.

"The darkness isn't physical."

Tae-jun groaned.

"That sentence is illegal."

"What does that even mean?"

"It means," Future Ji-hoon said calmly, "something is interfering with perception."

Ara's voice followed.

"The Archive is reacting."

"No," Future Ji-hoon corrected.

"…It's being overridden."

That word hit differently.

Overridden.

Like something else had taken control.

A faint glow suddenly appeared.

Not from the walls.

Not from the ceiling.

From Seo-yeon's hand.

Her gold ring.

It pulsed softly, casting warm light around us.

For the first time since the darkness fell, I could see again.

Her face looked tense.

Focused.

"I didn't activate it," she said quietly.

"It responded on its own."

Ara's crimson ring flickered next.

A dim, deeper glow spreading around her fingers.

Hae-in looked at her hand.

"…Same here."

Tae-jun raised his hand dramatically.

"Wow, look at that."

Pause.

"…Nothing. Still ringless. Love that for me."

But no one responded.

Because something else was happening.

The apartment room… was changing.

The walls flickered.

Like a glitch.

For a brief second, the cozy living room disappeared—

Replaced by something else.

A long corridor.

Cold.

Metallic.

Endless.

Then it snapped back to the apartment.

Tae-jun pointed immediately.

"Did you see that?!"

"Yes," Director Kang said.

His voice had dropped lower.

"The space is unstable."

Future Ji-hoon stepped closer into the light.

His expression had hardened.

"It's not the space."

He looked around slowly.

"It's the timeline."

Another flicker.

This time longer.

The apartment dissolved again—

And we were standing somewhere else.

A battlefield.

Broken structures.

Smoke in the air.

The sky dark.

And in the distance—

Seven figures standing apart from each other.

Each glowing with different light.

I couldn't see their faces clearly.

But I didn't need to.

I knew who they were.

Us.

Then—

Everything snapped back again.

The apartment returned.

The silence hit harder this time.

Seo-yeon's breathing had changed.

"…That wasn't just a vision."

Future Ji-hoon nodded.

"No."

"That was a memory."

Tae-jun shook his head rapidly.

"Nope."

"No."

"I refuse."

"I'm not participating in apocalyptic flashbacks."

Hae-in crossed her arms.

"Too late."

Another tremor ran through the room.

Stronger this time.

The lamp shattered.

Glass scattered across the floor.

The light from the rings became the only illumination left.

Future Ji-hoon turned toward the door.

"He's forcing the connection."

Ara frowned.

"Connection to what?"

Future Ji-hoon looked at me.

"…To you."

My chest tightened.

"Why me?"

But deep down, I already knew the answer.

Because of the notebook.

Because of the memories.

Because of whatever I had done before all of this.

Future Ji-hoon stepped closer.

"You're the anchor."

The word felt heavy.

"What does that mean?"

"It means every cycle revolves around you."

"That's not reassuring."

"It's not supposed to be."

Seo-yeon stepped beside me.

Her voice firm.

"Then tell us how to stop it."

Future Ji-hoon hesitated.

And for the first time—

He looked unsure.

"…We don't."

Silence.

Tae-jun blinked.

"…Excuse me?"

"We don't stop it," Future Ji-hoon repeated.

"We survive it."

"That's your plan?!" Tae-jun shouted.

"Survive?!"

"Do you have a better one?" Hae-in snapped.

"Yes!"

"Not being here!"

Another violent flicker hit the room.

This time—

It didn't go back immediately.

The apartment dissolved completely.

And we were somewhere else.

A training ground.

Bright daylight.

Military uniforms.

Shouts echoing.

My heart skipped.

Because I recognized this place.

And I recognized the people standing there.

Me.

Tae-jun.

A younger Tae-jun.

Laughing.

Running.

Seo-yeon stood near the edge, watching.

But there was someone else there too.

Someone we hadn't thought about in a long time.

A soldier.

Standing still.

Watching all of us.

His presence felt familiar.

Too familiar.

The same energy.

The same stillness.

Tae-jun's voice broke slightly.

"…That's him."

Ara nodded slowly.

"The Observer."

The soldier turned his head.

And for a brief moment—

His eyes met mine.

Not the present me.

The past me.

Standing in that memory.

Then—

Everything shattered.

We were thrown back into the apartment.

Everyone staggered slightly.

Seo-yeon grabbed my arm to steady herself.

"What… was that?" she whispered.

Future Ji-hoon looked shaken.

"…That wasn't supposed to happen."

Director Kang stepped forward immediately.

"What do you mean?"

Future Ji-hoon looked at me.

"The Observer isn't just watching."

His voice dropped.

"…He's entering the memories."

Tae-jun shook his head.

"Nope."

"No."

"That's not allowed."

"Someone tell him that's not allowed."

But no one laughed.

Because we all felt it.

Something had changed.

Something had crossed a line it wasn't supposed to cross.

Seo-yeon tightened her grip on my arm.

"…Ji-hoon."

I looked at her.

"What?"

Her eyes were filled with something I hadn't seen before.

Fear.

"He saw you."

I swallowed.

"I know."

Future Ji-hoon nodded slowly.

"And that means…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Because we all understood.

If the Observer could enter the past—

Then the past wasn't safe anymore.

And if the past changed—

Then everything changed.

The room trembled again.

But this time—

The door behind Future Ji-hoon slowly opened on its own.

Not the entrance we came from.

A different one.

Dark.

Endless.

Waiting.

Future Ji-hoon turned toward it.

"…That's new."

Tae-jun whispered,

"Why do new things keep happening?"

No one answered.

Because something stepped out of the darkness.

Not fully visible.

Not fully real.

Just a silhouette.

But one thing was clear.

It wasn't the Observer.

It wasn't human.

And it was looking directly at me.

The air turned heavy.

The rings glowed brighter.

And then—

The silhouette spoke.

Not loud.

Not threatening.

Just calm.

Ancient.

Familiar.

"…You're remembering too early."

My heart stopped.

Because the voice…

Was mine.
