Chapter 37 - The Voice That Knows Me

No one breathed.

No one moved.

The silhouette stood in the doorway like it had always been there… like it belonged there.

And yet—

Everything inside me screamed that it shouldn't exist.

"…You're remembering too early."

The voice echoed again.

Calm.

Controlled.

And unmistakably—

Mine.

Tae-jun slowly leaned closer to me.

His voice barely a whisper.

"…Ji-hoon."

"Yeah?"

"…If that's another version of you, I'm officially done."

"I'm getting the feeling we're just getting started."

The silhouette took one step forward.

The air shifted.

Not violently.

Not like an explosion or a shockwave.

But like pressure.

Like the space itself was making room for it.

Seo-yeon tightened her grip on my arm.

Her gold ring glowed brighter, almost reacting defensively.

"Stay behind me," she said quietly.

I almost laughed.

"Pretty sure I'm the target here."

"That's exactly why."

Her voice didn't shake.

But I could feel the tension in her hand.

Future me stepped in front of us.

Positioning himself between the silhouette and the rest of the group.

For the first time—

He didn't look calm.

"You shouldn't be here yet," he said.

The silhouette tilted its head slightly.

"And yet… I am."

Tae-jun whispered,

"Wow."

"They even talk the same."

Hae-in elbowed him lightly.

"Not now."

But even she couldn't hide the unease in her voice.

Ara stepped forward slightly, observing carefully.

"You're not the Observer."

The silhouette didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"No."

The answer was simple.

Direct.

"But I know him."

Director Kang adjusted his glasses.

"Then what are you?"

Silence.

Then—

"I am what remains."

That sentence didn't make things clearer.

It made them worse.

I stepped forward before anyone could stop me.

"…What does that mean?"

The silhouette turned its attention fully to me.

And even without seeing its face clearly—

I felt it.

Recognition.

Like looking into a mirror that reflected something I hadn't become yet.

"It means," the voice said slowly,

"…I am you."

The room went still again.

Tae-jun closed his eyes.

"Yep."

"There it is."

"I knew it."

"Too many Ji-hoons."

"I don't like this plot."

Future me didn't laugh.

His voice hardened.

"No."

"You're not me."

The silhouette didn't react.

Instead, it took another step forward.

"I was you."

That one word—

was—

hit differently.

Seo-yeon's voice came sharp.

"What happened to you?"

The silhouette paused.

For a moment—

It felt like even it didn't want to answer.

Then—

"You did."

Everyone froze.

Seo-yeon's grip on my arm loosened slightly.

"…What?"

The silhouette's voice remained calm.

"In every cycle… you make the same choice."

Future Ji-hoon stepped forward again.

"Don't listen to it."

But the silhouette continued.

"You trust the wrong moment."

"You protect the wrong person."

"You hesitate."

Each word felt heavier than the last.

"And because of that…"

The room darkened slightly.

"…everything ends."

My chest tightened.

"Then tell me what to do differently."

Future Ji-hoon turned sharply.

"Ji-hoon—"

But I didn't look at him.

I kept my eyes on the silhouette.

Because something inside me—

Something deep—

Was telling me this mattered.

The silhouette tilted its head again.

"You already know."

"I don't."

"You do."

My voice rose.

"Then say it clearly!"

For the first time—

The silhouette moved faster.

In an instant—

It was standing right in front of me.

So close I could feel the cold air around it.

And then—

It whispered.

"Next time… don't save her."

Everything stopped.

Seo-yeon froze beside me.

Her hand slipped from my arm.

"…What?"

The word came out small.

Broken.

I didn't move.

I couldn't.

Because I understood what it meant.

Or at least…

I understood enough.

Future Ji-hoon stepped forward immediately.

"That's enough."

His voice was sharp.

Commanding.

"You don't get to interfere like this."

The silhouette didn't step back.

"Interfere?"

It let out a quiet, almost amused breath.

"I am the result of your failure."

That hit harder than anything else.

Tae-jun finally stood up.

"Nope."

"Not okay."

"Absolutely not okay."

He pointed at the silhouette.

"You don't just walk in here and start saying things like 'don't save her'!"

"That's illegal!"

Hae-in grabbed his arm.

"Calm down."

"I am calm!"

"You're shouting."

"I'm calmly shouting!"

But even his humor couldn't break the tension.

Seo-yeon slowly stepped forward.

Her eyes were locked on the silhouette.

"…Which 'her'?"

Silence.

The silhouette didn't answer immediately.

But it didn't need to.

Because we all felt it.

It was obvious.

Too obvious.

Seo-yeon swallowed.

"…Me?"

The silhouette looked at her.

And for the first time—

There was something else in its presence.

Not coldness.

Not distance.

Something closer to…

Regret.

"Yes."

The word landed like a blade.

"No," I said immediately.

The answer came without thinking.

Without hesitation.

"No."

Future Ji-hoon looked at me.

"Ji-hoon—"

"I said no."

My voice was steady.

Firm.

"I don't care what happened before."

"I don't care about cycles or resets."

"I'm not letting her die."

The room went silent.

The silhouette studied me.

For a long moment.

Then—

"…You always say that."

The words weren't mocking.

They were tired.

Like it had heard this answer too many times.

Future Ji-hoon clenched his fist.

"This is exactly why you're dangerous."

The silhouette didn't react.

"Am I?"

"Yes."

"Because I tell the truth?"

"No," Future Ji-hoon said.

"Because you only tell part of it."

That made everyone pause.

Ara stepped forward.

"What part?"

Future Ji-hoon looked at the silhouette.

"You never tell him what happens after he saves her."

Silence.

Seo-yeon turned slowly.

"…What happens?"

The silhouette didn't answer.

Future Ji-hoon did.

"…That's when everything breaks."

The room felt colder again.

Tae-jun whispered,

"…Define 'everything.'"

Future Ji-hoon didn't look away from the silhouette.

"The Archive collapses."

"The reset fails."

"And the world—"

He stopped.

Like even saying it out loud would make it real.

"…doesn't get another chance."

No one spoke.

Because suddenly—

This wasn't just about survival.

It wasn't just about the rings.

It was about a choice.

A single choice.

Save Seo-yeon.

Or save everything else.

Seo-yeon took a step back.

Her voice shook slightly.

"…Then the answer is obvious."

I turned to her.

"No."

She looked at me.

"Yes."

"If that's the cost—"

"No."

I stepped closer.

"I'm not accepting that."

"You don't get to decide that alone," she said.

"And you don't get to sacrifice yourself like that," I replied.

Hae-in stepped between us.

"Both of you, stop."

"This isn't helping."

Tae-jun raised his hand.

"Agreed."

"Also, I vote for a third option."

Everyone looked at him.

"What third option?" Ara asked.

He shrugged.

"Neither."

Silence.

"…What?"

"We don't let her die," Tae-jun said.

"And we don't let the world end."

Future Ji-hoon shook his head.

"That option doesn't exist."

Tae-jun pointed at him.

"According to you."

"According to experience."

"Yeah, well," Tae-jun said,

"your experience clearly isn't working."

That actually made Future Ji-hoon pause.

For the first time—

He didn't have an immediate answer.

Tae-jun looked around at all of us.

"We're not the same people you were before."

He pointed at me.

"Maybe he makes a different choice."

He pointed at Seo-yeon.

"Maybe she doesn't need saving."

He pointed at the silhouette.

"And maybe that guy is just a worst-case version."

The room stayed quiet.

But something had shifted.

A small crack in the inevitability of everything.

The silhouette looked at Tae-jun.

"…Hope."

It said the word like it was unfamiliar.

"Hope is what breaks the cycle," Tae-jun said.

Future Ji-hoon exhaled slowly.

"…Or what repeats it."

The silhouette finally stepped back.

Toward the doorway.

Its presence began to fade slightly.

"This conversation has already happened."

It looked at me one last time.

"And you still chose her."

My chest tightened.

"And I will again."

For a moment—

The silhouette didn't move.

Then—

"…Then we will meet again."

And just like that—

It was gone.

The darkness in the doorway disappeared.

The room stabilized.

The flickering stopped.

The apartment returned to normal.

Silence filled the space.

No shaking.

No shifting.

Just us.

Standing there.

Trying to process what just happened.

Tae-jun sat down slowly.

"…I need food."

Hae-in let out a quiet breath.

"…You always need food."

"Stress eating is a valid coping mechanism."

Seo-yeon didn't speak.

She stood still.

Looking at the place where the silhouette had been.

I stepped closer to her.

"…Hey."

She didn't look at me.

"…Don't."

"What?"

"Don't make that choice."

I frowned.

"What choice?"

She finally turned.

Her eyes were steady.

But there was something fragile behind them.

"…If it comes to it."

"Don't choose me."

I shook my head immediately.

"Not happening."

"Ji-hoon—"

"I mean it."

I stepped closer.

"I don't care what the past says."

"I don't care what future me says."

"I'm not leaving you behind."

She held my gaze.

For a long moment.

Then she looked away.

"…You're stubborn."

"Yeah."

Tae-jun raised his hand again.

"Confirmed."

"Very stubborn."

Future Ji-hoon watched us quietly.

His expression unreadable.

Then he said softly—

"…That's exactly how it starts."

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He turned toward the photographs on the wall again.

The one with all of us.

Smiling.

Alive.

Together.

"…It starts with a promise."

His voice dropped.

"And ends with a choice."

The room felt heavy again.

But this time—

Not because of fear.

Because of what was coming.

And deep down—

I knew one thing for certain.

No matter how many times the world reset…

No matter how many warnings I was given…

When that moment came—

I was going to make the same choice again.

And maybe—

That was exactly the problem.
