Chapter 28: Echoes Along the Road

The farther Jean Fong traveled, the more subtle changes followed him.

Not banners.

Not announcements.

Not crowds.

Just… small echoes.

A roadside stall that kept extra water bowls out for passing Pokémon.

A Pokémon Center nurse who spoke gently to every injured partner, no matter how minor the wound.

A traveling trainer who stopped a battle early when they noticed their opponent's Pokémon was exhausted.

None of them said Jean Fong's name.

Most didn't even realize why they had begun acting differently.

But the shift was there.

And it was spreading.

The Broken Bicycle

Near midday, Jean Fong came across a girl sitting beside the road, knees pulled to her chest.

A bent bicycle lay on its side nearby.

A Minccino sat in her lap, wiping tears from her cheeks with its fluffy tail.

Jean Fong stopped.

"What happened?" he asked.

The girl sniffed. "Chain snapped. I was trying to get to the next town for my first Gym challenge."

Jean Fong crouched and examined the bike.

The chain was twisted badly.

"Do you know how to fix it?" he asked.

The girl shook her head.

Jean Fong looked at Minccino. "Do you?"

Minccino perked up and nodded enthusiastically.

Jean Fong smiled faintly.

"Show me."

With Minccino's nimble paws and Jean Fong's steady hands, they worked together.

Ten minutes later, the chain was back in place.

The girl stared. "You're amazing!"

Jean Fong shook his head. "Minccino did most of it."

Minccino puffed up proudly.

The girl bowed. "I'm Hana! Thank you!"

Jean Fong nodded. "Good luck at your Gym."

Hana hesitated. "Are you… a famous trainer?"

Jean Fong stood. "No."

Hana looked confused.

Jean Fong walked away.

A Battle That Didn't Happen

Later that afternoon, two trainers stood facing each other on a narrow stretch of road.

Pokémon were out.

Tension crackled.

One trainer looked furious.

"He bumped into me and laughed!"

The other snapped back. "You stepped on my Pokémon's tail!"

Jean Fong stopped between them.

Neither had noticed him approach.

"Your Pokémon are already stressed," Jean Fong said.

Both trainers glanced at their partners.

A Machop's fists were clenched.

A Scyther's wings buzzed harshly.

Jean Fong continued, "If you battle like this, someone gets hurt for no reason."

The trainers hesitated.

Silence stretched.

Finally, one trainer exhaled. "...I didn't mean to step on its tail."

The other rubbed the back of his neck. "I shouldn't have yelled."

Jean Fong stepped aside.

They recalled their Pokémon.

No battle.

Jean Fong walked on.

Pokémon That Follow

As evening neared, Jean Fong rested beneath a large tree.

He removed a simple meal from his pack.

Before he finished opening it, movement rustled around him.

A Sentret peeked from the bushes.

A Hoothoot landed on a low branch.

Two Pidove hopped closer.

Jean Fong sighed quietly.

"…You don't have to."

They stayed anyway.

Jean Fong divided part of his food.

No rush.

No pressure.

They ate peacefully.

When he finished, the Pokémon left.

No capture.

No bonds forged.

Just a shared moment.

System Space

Inside the system space, Rayquaza remained coiled in stillness.

Mew drifted lazily.

Gardevoir observed quietly.

Sylvia sat near Jean Fong's presence.

"You're changing things," Mew said casually.

Jean Fong did not answer.

Sylvia spoke gently. "You're not trying to."

Jean Fong remained silent.

Rayquaza opened one eye.

"That makes it more dangerous."

Jean Fong's gaze stayed forward.

A Name in the Wind

That night, Jean Fong stayed at a small Pokémon Center.

Two backpacking trainers whispered nearby.

"Did you hear about that guy who stopped a landslide?"

"I heard he healed a wild Pokémon without even touching it."

"They say Pokémon just follow him."

Jean Fong lay on his bed.

He said nothing.

Toward the Next Town

Morning arrived.

Jean Fong checked his map.

Another town lay a day's walk ahead.

Another Gym.

Another road.

He shouldered his pack.

Outside the Pokémon Center, Hana stood with Minccino.

She waved excitedly. "My bike made it all the way here!"

Jean Fong nodded. "Good."

She hesitated. "I told my mom I want to be a trainer who helps people, not just battles."

Jean Fong paused.

"…That's a good kind of trainer."

Hana smiled brightly.

Jean Fong walked away.

Behind him, Hana whispered to Minccino, "I want to be like that someday."

Jean Fong did not hear it.

But the echo remained.
