Chapter 16 - chapter 27

: A Choice, Not an Order

The road beyond the mountain village curved gently through rolling hills.

The air felt lighter after the storm, carrying the scent of wet earth and new growth. Jean Fong walked at an easy pace, hands in his pockets, footsteps quiet against the dirt path.

Behind him, someone hesitated.

"Um… excuse me!"

Jean Fong slowed and turned.

A boy around fourteen stood a short distance away, clutching a worn Poké Ball. His clothes were patched, his shoes muddy, and nervous energy radiated from him like static.

"I—I'm sorry," the boy said quickly. "I followed you from the village."

Jean Fong studied him calmly. "You don't need to apologize."

The boy swallowed. "My name is Theo."

Jean Fong nodded once. "Jean Fong."

Theo took a breath. "Yesterday… when everything was falling apart… you didn't yell. You didn't panic. You just… knew what to do."

Jean Fong tilted his head slightly. "Anyone can stay calm with practice."

Theo clenched his fists. "I can't."

Jean Fong waited.

Theo released a Poké Ball.

A small, scrawny Shinx appeared, fur singed at the edges, one ear nicked.

"He's mine," Theo said. "But I don't know if I should be a trainer."

Shinx looked up at Theo.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Just uncertain.

The Weight of Doubt

Theo sat on a fallen log, shoulders slumped.

"My dad says I should take over his repair shop," Theo said. "My mom thinks I should work at the Poké Mart. Everyone keeps telling me what I'm good at."

He glanced at Shinx.

"But no one asks what I want."

Jean Fong leaned against a tree nearby.

"What do you want?" he asked.

Theo opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

"I don't know."

Jean Fong nodded. "That's honest."

Theo looked surprised. "It is?"

"Yes."

Jean Fong knelt in front of Shinx and held out his hand.

Shinx sniffed.

Then bumped its forehead gently against his fingers.

Jean Fong smiled faintly.

"Tell me how you met."

Theo brightened a little. "He was stuck in a drainage tunnel during a flood months ago. I crawled in and pulled him out."

"Did anyone tell you to?"

Theo shook his head.

"Why did you do it?"

"…Because he was scared."

Jean Fong looked at him. "That's already your answer."

Theo blinked. "I don't understand."

"You didn't rescue him because someone ordered you to. You didn't help yesterday because you were told to. You act when you see someone in need."

Jean Fong stood.

"That doesn't decide your job."

"But it does say something about who you are."

A Small Test

Jean Fong gestured toward the grassy field beside the road.

"Let's walk."

Theo followed, Shinx padding beside him.

After a few minutes, faint rustling came from the tall grass.

A weak cry.

Jean Fong stopped.

Theo heard it too.

A small Budew lay tangled in thorny vines, struggling weakly.

Theo froze.

Jean Fong didn't move.

He didn't give commands.

He didn't speak.

Theo looked between Jean Fong and the Budew.

Then at Shinx.

Then back at the Budew.

Slowly, Theo approached.

"It's okay," he whispered.

Shinx sparked softly, illuminating the vines.

Theo carefully untangled the Budew, wincing when thorns scraped his hands.

Budew tumbled free.

It stared at Theo.

Then bounced happily.

Theo laughed before he could stop himself.

Jean Fong watched quietly.

No Path Is Wrong

Theo returned, cradling Budew gently before setting it down.

"I didn't even think," Theo said. "I just… moved."

Jean Fong nodded.

Theo hesitated. "So… does that mean I should become a trainer?"

Jean Fong shook his head.

"It means you can."

Theo frowned. "That's not the same."

Jean Fong's voice remained steady.

"If I tell you what to be, you'll spend your life wondering what would've happened if you chose differently."

Theo looked down.

"You don't need permission," Jean Fong continued. "You don't need a title. You don't need to prove anything."

He tapped Theo lightly on the chest.

"You just need to decide what kind of person you want to be."

Theo was quiet for a long time.

Shinx pressed against his leg.

Theo knelt and hugged it.

"…I want to travel," he said softly. "Not forever. Not to be a Champion. I just want to see what's out there."

Jean Fong nodded. "That's enough."

A Parting Gift

Jean Fong reached into his pack and removed a small pouch.

Inside were basic supplies: potion, berries, bandages.

He handed it to Theo.

"For emergencies."

Theo's eyes widened. "I can't take this!"

"You can," Jean Fong said. "You didn't ask for it. You didn't demand it. You earned it by acting."

Theo bowed deeply. "Thank you!"

Jean Fong gave a small smile. "Take care of your partner."

Theo nodded fiercely. "I will!"

Different Roads, Same Sky

They stood at a crossroads.

One path led toward the village.

The other stretched toward distant towns and unknown routes.

Theo took a step toward the village.

"I need to talk to my parents first," he said.

Jean Fong nodded. "Good choice."

Theo hesitated. "Will I ever see you again?"

Jean Fong turned toward the open road.

"Maybe."

Theo smiled.

"That's good enough."

Jean Fong walked away.

Behind him, Theo watched for a long time.

Then looked down at Shinx.

"Guess we've got thinking to do, huh?"

Shinx chirped.

Jean Fong did not look back.

The road accepted his footsteps.

And somewhere along another path, a boy had begun choosing his own future.
