Chapter 20 - chapter 31

Chapter 31: A Promise Under the Open Sky

The road beyond the town was narrow and peaceful.

Tall grass swayed gently under a clear blue sky. Wild Pokémon appeared and vanished between the stems, curious but cautious.

Jean Fong walked with steady steps.

No destination in mind beyond forward.

A Cry in the Distance

A sharp cry broke the quiet.

Not aggressive.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Jean Fong changed direction immediately.

He followed the sound through tall grass and around a cluster of rocks until he found the source.

A small Eevee stood protectively in front of a fallen trainer.

The trainer—an older teenage girl—had twisted her ankle badly. She tried to stand and failed, biting back a groan.

Eevee growled weakly at Jean Fong.

Jean Fong stopped several steps away and knelt.

"I'm not here to hurt you."

Eevee hesitated.

Jean Fong slowly placed a potion on the ground and slid it toward them.

"For her ankle."

The girl blinked. "You… you're giving this to us?"

Jean Fong nodded.

Eevee sniffed the bottle.

Then nudged it toward the girl.

Trust Built Slowly

Jean Fong stayed seated as the girl sprayed the potion on her ankle.

She winced.

Then sighed.

"…It feels better."

Jean Fong did not move closer.

"What happened?" he asked.

"I slipped chasing Eevee," she said. "We're both new to traveling."

Jean Fong glanced at Eevee.

"You stayed."

The girl smiled weakly. "Yeah. She wouldn't leave me."

Jean Fong nodded once.

"That matters."

The Hard Question

They sat in silence for a moment.

The girl spoke quietly.

"I'm scared I won't be good enough."

Jean Fong looked at her.

"For what?"

"For being a trainer. For taking care of her."

Jean Fong considered his words.

"Being afraid means you care."

The girl frowned. "That doesn't make me strong."

Jean Fong shook his head.

"It makes you honest."

Eevee stepped closer to her trainer and leaned against her leg.

Jean Fong watched.

"Your Pokémon already chose you," he said. "You don't need to earn that again."

Tears welled in the girl's eyes.

"…I won't quit," she said softly.

Jean Fong nodded. "That's a promise."

She wiped her face. "I'm Mira."

"Jean Fong."

Helping Without Carrying

Jean Fong fashioned a simple walking support using a fallen branch and cloth from his pack.

"Lean on this," he said.

Mira tested it carefully.

"I can walk."

Jean Fong stood.

"The next town is half a day away. Move slowly. Rest often."

Mira hesitated. "Will you walk with us?"

Jean Fong shook his head gently.

"You can do this."

Mira looked at Eevee.

Eevee nodded enthusiastically.

Mira laughed softly.

"Okay."

A Quiet Promise

Before leaving, Jean Fong knelt and met Eevee's eyes.

"Watch over her."

Eevee barked once.

Jean Fong looked at Mira.

"Trust your partner. And yourself."

Mira bowed. "Thank you."

Jean Fong turned away.

Under the Open Sky

The wind brushed through the grass.

Jean Fong walked alone once more.

Inside the system space, Sylvia's voice was soft.

"You give people strength without taking credit."

Jean Fong replied quietly.

"They already have it."

Gardevoir inclined her head.

Rayquaza rumbled faintly.

"A promise kept is power."

Jean Fong continued forward.

Not chasing legends.

Not running from destiny.

Just walking his road—

Under the open sky.
