Chapter 12 - Chapter 23

Chapter 23: Words for the Road Ahead

Morning light spilled across the dirt road as Jean Fong left the Gym town behind him. The stone walls faded into the distance, replaced by open fields and the quiet hum of wild Pokémon beginning their day.

The road was peaceful.

Until voices broke the calm.

"Why won't you listen to me?"

"I said move!"

Jean Fong slowed.

Ahead, a young girl stood in the middle of the road, fists clenched tight at her sides. Her Ponyta paced in small, uneven circles, flames flaring unpredictably—not aggressive, but nervous.

Jean Fong approached slowly, keeping his steps light.

"Rough morning?" he asked.

The girl jumped. "Ah—sorry! I didn't mean to block the road."

She tugged gently on Ponyta's reins, but the Pokémon resisted, hooves scraping against the dirt.

Jean Fong stopped a few steps away. "May I come closer?"

Ponyta flicked its ears toward him.

The girl hesitated, then nodded. "I'm Lina."

"Jean Fong."

He didn't reach for a Poké Ball. He didn't command.

He simply crouched to Ponyta's eye level.

"You're trying very hard," he said calmly. "Both of you."

Ponyta's flames steadied—just a little.

Lina blinked. "You… you can tell?"

Jean Fong stood. "You're giving commands like you're afraid it won't listen. Pokémon feel that."

Lina's shoulders slumped. "Everyone says Ponyta are fast and brave. Mine freezes whenever it matters."

Jean Fong looked at Ponyta again. "Bravery isn't loud."

He gestured down the road. "Walk with me for a minute."

A Short Walk

They walked in silence at first.

Ponyta gradually moved closer to Jean Fong's side—not touching, but comfortable.

"Tell me why you left home," Jean Fong said.

Lina stared at the road. "I wanted to be strong. My family said the League would teach me that."

Jean Fong nodded. "Strength comes later."

She frowned. "Then what comes first?"

"Trust."

They stopped at a shallow stream crossing the road.

Jean Fong stepped aside. "Try something different."

Lina swallowed. "…Like what?"

"Don't command," he said. "Ask."

She looked embarrassed. Then turned to Ponyta.

"…Can you cross with me?"

Ponyta hesitated.

Then stepped forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

They crossed together.

Lina's eyes widened. "You did it!"

Ponyta snorted softly, head lifting with quiet pride.

Jean Fong smiled. "That's the difference. You weren't telling it what to do. You were inviting it."

One More Lesson

A shout echoed nearby.

"Help! Please!"

Jean Fong reacted instantly, but not with urgency—only certainty.

A merchant's cart had tipped near the roadside. Boxes spilled everywhere. A Magnemite crackled weakly, trapped between twisted metal.

The merchant panicked. "I can't free it—it's overheating!"

Jean Fong knelt immediately. "Stay calm."

He didn't battle.

He coordinated.

"Sylvia, stabilize."

"Gardevoir, lift gently."

The metal shifted smoothly.

Magnemite popped free and hovered shakily.

Jean Fong held out a berry. "Easy now."

The Magnemite steadied.

The merchant bowed deeply. "Thank you! I don't know what I would've done!"

Jean Fong stood. "Next time, secure the load better."

Lina watched everything in silence.

"You didn't fight," she said.

Jean Fong met her eyes. "Not everything is a battle."

Pointers, Not Promises

They returned to the road.

Jean Fong stopped.

"This is where I turn off," he said.

Lina panicked slightly. "Already?"

Jean Fong nodded.

He crouched and looked at Ponyta one last time. "You're fine the way you are."

Then he turned to Lina.

"Three things," he said.

She straightened immediately. "Okay."

"First: Speak less during battles. Let your Pokémon think."

She nodded.

"Second: Train when there's no pressure. Confidence comes before Gyms."

Another nod.

"And third—" He paused. "If you're scared, say so. Pokémon trust honesty more than courage."

Lina swallowed hard. "Will I see you again?"

Jean Fong smiled faintly. "If the road decides it."

He stepped past her.

After a few steps, Lina called out, "Jean!"

He turned.

"…Thank you."

Jean Fong raised a hand in a small wave.

Then continued on.

After He Leaves

Lina stood still for a long moment.

Then she looked at Ponyta.

"…Wanna train?"

Ponyta stepped closer.

The road felt less frightening.

Farther Down the Path

Jean Fong walked alone once more.

Within the system space, his Pokémon observed quietly.

Gardevoir's gaze was gentle.

Sylvia radiated warmth.

Mew chuckled softly.

Rayquaza remained still—approving in silence.

Jean Fong adjusted his stride.

He didn't gather companions.

He didn't build legends intentionally.

He simply helped when needed—

And trusted the road to do the rest.
