After the Legend Walked Away

There was no announcement.

No final address.

No ceremonial transfer of authority.

Because there was no authority to transfer.

That had always been the point.

I left before sunrise.

Not dramatically.

Not secretly.

Simply early enough that the basin was still quiet.

The ridge held the last of the night wind. The stone beneath my hand felt cool, steady, unchanged.

Below, the exchange slept.

Not because it was fragile.

Because it was stable.

Lucien stood a few steps behind me.

"You're certain," he said.

"Yes."

Cassian had already adjusted the documentation protocols weeks ago. My direct review permissions had been phased into collective oversight. No one objected. No one panicked.

The system did not tremble.

That was how I knew.

Lucien moved beside me, gaze fixed on the basin.

"You built something irreversible."

"No," I corrected softly. "We removed what was reversible."

He understood.

Power can reverse.

Culture resists reversal.
