Cecilia Adler wasn't surprised. She had long anticipated this turn of events.
She had no intention of listening to him, but to reduce family friction, she verbally agreed, "Okay, I've been on my best behavior lately and haven't done a thing." She then seamlessly changed the subject, telling him she wanted to learn English.
Jim Quincy thought she wouldn't be able to learn it, and even if she did, she'd have no use for it. It would be a complete waste of time. Still, he couldn't bring himself to discourage her. "Just manage your time well and don't let it interfere with getting your driver's license."
"Okay. If there's nothing else, I'll be going." Cecilia Adler left the study.
Ian Quincy came forward to meet her and said right in front of Mrs. Quincy, "What did Old Quincy say to you? If he told you to take over all the housework, I'll go refuse him right now." His wife was not going to be some drudge, waiting on his entire family.
