Her in-laws and Ian Quincy were waiting for her in the living room.
Her father-in-law spoke first. "Cecilia, where have you been?" 'This late... she couldn't have been at the black market again, could she?'
"Out having fun," Cecilia Adler said.
Jim Quincy: "Having fun? With who? Your driver's license, your English—have you mastered them yet?"
"You wouldn't know her even if I told you. She's a new friend I made, a girl. Would you like to meet her? If so, I can find some time to bring her home for you to see. As for the driver's license and English, I've already got them down."
Jim Quincy: "..." 'Who wants to meet her? Does this girl even know how to talk? With phrasing like that, she claims she's learning English? What a joke!'
Mrs. Quincy didn't believe in Cecilia Adler's ability to learn. "You've got them down? Let's hear a little something, then."
"I just learned the English alphabet today. Are you sure you want to hear it?" Cecilia Adler asked.
"Let's hear it."
