CHAPTER 33
The last Herald fell in silence.
Its body dissolved into fragments of white light that drifted across the city like ash before fading into nothing. For a brief moment, no one moved.
Then the Judge spoke.
"You continue to produce variables beyond acceptable limits."
Its voice echoed through every building, every street, every living mind.
"Probability of successful correction has fallen below forty percent."
Kael rested the tip of his sword against empty air.
"You've always relied too much on probability."
The Judge's crown rotated slowly.
"And you have always relied too much on hope."
Kael smiled faintly.
"No."
"I rely on people."
The Judge's stars brightened.
"That is why you always lose."
The words lingered.
Ari noticed something unusual.
Kael didn't argue.
He simply lowered his eyes for a moment.
Leon noticed it too.
"Master..."
Kael had lost before.
Many times.
The realization struck Ari harder than any attack.
The strongest hunter in history wasn't undefeated.
He had simply survived every defeat.
The Judge extended both hands toward the Rift.
The crimson wound across the sky pulsed violently.
One after another, enormous circles of light formed around the city, each inscribed with symbols older than human civilization.
Lune stared at them.
"They're not attack formations."
"What are they?" Mika asked.
"They're locks."
As soon as she spoke, the circles activated.
The space surrounding the city folded inward.
The skyline blurred.
The horizon disappeared.
Ari looked toward the mountains beyond the city.
They were gone.
Only endless white light remained.
"We're trapped," Leon whispered.
Kael nodded once.
"They've isolated this entire region from reality."
The Judge looked down upon them.
"No external interference."
"No escape."
"No witnesses."
The city had become a prison.
Panic spread below as communication towers failed. Phones lost signal. Satellites disappeared from every display.
The outside world no longer existed.
At least not from inside the barrier.
Kael looked toward Ari, Mika, and Lune.
"Stay together."
Ari frowned.
"You're not coming with us?"
Before Kael could answer, the Judge moved.
For something so enormous, it crossed the distance instantly.
Its hand closed around Kael.
The impact shattered the clouds and drove him through three abandoned skyscrapers before he crashed into the outskirts of the city.
The ground erupted beneath him.
Dust swallowed everything.
"Kael!" Ari shouted.
He rushed forward.
"Stop."
Leon's hand caught his shoulder.
"You'll die."
"I can't just—"
The dust exploded outward.
Kael stepped from the crater, brushing stone dust from his coat.
His expression hadn't changed.
"You hit harder than the last one."
The Judge's voice remained emotionless.
"Previous Judge designation: Sol-9."
"Destroyed by subject Kael Ryven."
"Data confirmed."
Ari blinked.
"There were others?"
Leon answered quietly.
"There have always been others."
Kael looked toward the Judge.
"I was hoping you'd forgotten."
"I do not forget."
The Judge lifted both hands.
The circles surrounding the isolated city began descending.
Not toward Kael.
Toward the people.
Buildings started dissolving into particles of light.
Roads vanished beneath people's feet.
Entire neighborhoods flickered as though reality itself had become unstable.
Lune's face turned pale.
"It's deleting the city's existence."
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"So that's your solution."
"If reality cannot be corrected..."
The Judge paused.
"...it shall be rewritten."
Ari didn't wait.
He sprinted toward the nearest collapsing district.
Hundreds of civilians stood frozen as their homes disappeared around them.
Children cried.
Parents searched desperately for family members who had been separated in the chaos.
Ari planted both feet on the ground.
His barriers expanded.
This time they weren't transparent.
Golden patterns spread through them, intertwining with the blue energy.
Lune stared.
"That's new."
The barriers anchored themselves directly into the fabric of reality.
Where they spread, the disappearing buildings stabilized.
The rewriting process slowed.
Ari grimaced as pain shot through his body.
It felt as though invisible hands were trying to pull his soul apart.
"I..."
He coughed blood.
"...can hold it..."
His knees buckled.
"...just a little longer."
Mika appeared beside him.
"You don't have to do it alone."
She placed one hand against the barrier.
Space bent around it.
Instead of resisting the rewriting force, she redirected it into empty regions beyond the city.
The pressure on Ari immediately lessened.
He looked at her and smiled.
"Thanks."
She smirked.
"You'd better not collapse."
"I wasn't planning to."
Above them, Kael watched silently.
A quiet pride flickered in his eyes.
They weren't following his instructions anymore.
They were understanding them.
The Judge noticed as well.
"Synchronization increasing."
"Threat level revised."
Its gaze shifted from Kael to Ari.
Then Mika.
Finally Lune.
"Successors confirmed."
"No," Kael said.
The Judge looked back at him.
"They're not successors."
For the first time, Kael's voice carried unmistakable conviction.
"They'll become something better."
The Judge raised one hand.
"Then they shall be erased before maturation."
A beam of black starlight shot toward Ari.
Kael vanished.
He appeared directly in its path.
The beam struck him squarely in the chest.
For the first time since the battle had begun...
Kael bled.
A single drop of crimson fell through the air.
It landed on the ruined street below.
The earth shook.
Ancient runes hidden beneath the city blazed to life, spreading outward in every direction like roots awakening after centuries of sleep.
Deep below the city, behind countless seals and forgotten gates, something ancient opened its eyes.
A voice echoed from the darkness.
"So..."
"It is time."
The massive stone doors of an underground chamber began to open.
Something that Kael had sealed away with his own hands centuries ago...
...had awakened.
