The first Judge crossed the Rift.
Then another.
Within seconds, dozens of colossal figures descended from the crimson wound in the sky. Each carried a different crown of stars, each radiated a different pressure, and each distorted reality simply by existing.
The city fell silent.
Even the wind refused to move.
Ari tightened his grip as he looked up.
"...There are too many."
The armored man beside Kael smiled faintly.
"There were always too many."
He reached over his shoulder and drew the massive sword strapped across his back. Unlike Kael's black blade, this weapon gleamed with pale silver light. Ancient runes covered its length, glowing softly as though greeting an old friend.
The moment the blade left its sheath, every Judge stopped.
One of them spoke.
"Guardian Zero has resumed activity."
Another answered.
"Probability of mission failure increasing."
A third raised its hand.
"Deploy complete force."
The remaining Judges began moving together.
The sky itself seemed to descend.
Kael glanced toward Ari, Mika, and Lune.
"Protect the people."
"What about you?" Ari asked.
Kael's eyes never left the enemy.
"We'll handle the impossible."
The armored man laughed.
"I've missed fighting beside you."
"You'll regret saying that in five minutes," Kael replied.
"Probably."
They vanished.
The explosion that followed shattered the silence.
Neither Ari nor Mika could follow their movements.
The sky erupted with flashes of black, silver, and crimson as the two ancient warriors carved through the advancing Judges. Every clash produced shockwaves powerful enough to split clouds across the horizon.
A single swing from Kael erased an entire wall of starlight.
The armored man answered with a sweeping strike that cleaved a Judge in half, its body dissolving into countless fragments before it could regenerate.
Leon watched with disbelief.
"I trained under Kael for twenty years..."
His voice was barely audible.
"...and I never understood how wide the gap really was."
Another Judge appeared behind Kael, driving a spear of condensed light toward his back.
Before the attack could land, the armored man stepped between them.
Steel met starlight.
The impact echoed across the city.
"I've still got your back," he said with a grin.
Kael answered without looking at him.
"You always did."
Far below, another wave of Heralds poured from smaller rifts opening throughout the city.
They spread through the streets with terrifying speed.
Ari took a deep breath.
"We can't let them reach the shelters."
Mika nodded once.
"Let's move."
The two of them leaped from the rooftop together.
Lune followed, her golden threads spreading through the city like streams of light.
"They're coordinating," she said. "Every Herald is connected."
"Can you disrupt them?" Ari asked.
"I can try."
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, the battlefield disappeared from her senses.
Instead, she heard it.
Not voices.
Not commands.
A rhythm.
A single pulse flowing between every Herald and every Judge.
"They're all sharing one mind."
Her eyes snapped open.
"If we interrupt that connection, they'll lose coordination."
Mika smiled.
"Then that's our target."
They reached the nearest intersection just as five Heralds descended.
The creatures immediately detected them.
"Priority targets identified."
"Eliminate."
The Heralds attacked simultaneously.
Ari planted his feet.
His barriers expanded in overlapping layers, intercepting every strike. The impact rattled his bones, but the shields held.
"Mika!"
She disappeared.
Space folded around her, carrying her behind the Heralds in an instant.
She placed one hand against the air.
The space between the five Heralds twisted violently.
Their formations collapsed as they crashed into one another.
Lune extended both hands.
Golden threads shot forward, weaving through the air until they touched each Herald.
"I found it."
The threads tightened.
A strange chime echoed across the battlefield.
The glowing circles inside the Heralds' helmets flickered.
One by one, they hesitated.
Then stopped moving entirely.
"It worked," Ari whispered.
The Heralds suddenly turned toward one another instead of the hunters.
Their perfect synchronization had been broken.
Without shared commands, confusion spread through their ranks.
Across the city, hunters immediately noticed the change.
"They've slowed down!"
"Now!"
The combined forces of humanity launched a counterattack.
Guild masters, military hunters, independent elites, and veteran fighters struck together.
For the first time since the invasion began, the Heralds were being pushed back.
High above, one of the Judges looked toward the city.
"Control network compromised."
Another answered.
"Source identified."
Its glowing gaze settled on Lune.
"Terminate the harmonic conduit."
A spear of starlight fell from the heavens.
It was aimed directly at Lune.
She looked up.
There wasn't enough time to move.
Ari threw himself forward.
His barrier formed between Lune and the descending spear.
The impact shattered every layer instantly.
Another barrier formed.
Then another.
Each one broke in succession.
The final shield cracked.
The spear pierced through—
Only to stop inches from Lune's face.
Kael stood before her.
The spear had passed through his left shoulder.
Blood flowed steadily down his arm.
He looked over his shoulder.
"You all right?"
Lune could only nod.
Kael smiled faintly.
"Good."
He gripped the spear with one hand.
Ancient runes ignited beneath his skin as he pulled it free.
The wound closed almost immediately.
He looked toward the Judge responsible.
His expression became unreadable.
"You've made your choice."
The black blade in his hand began to hum.
Not loudly.
Softly.
Like a distant heartbeat.
The armored man sensed it and took a step back.
"Oh..."
He sighed.
"You're actually angry."
Above them, every Judge froze.
They felt it too.
For the first time since the war began...
Kael Ryven had stopped fighting to defend.
He was about to fight to end the battle.
