Eugene woke up in disappointment.
He could no longer smell the grass, the trees, and the garden before rain. He could no longer sense the scent enveloping him like a soothing cocoon.
Well, at least it was good while it lasted.
He consoled himself as he stretched in Arthur's arms and pushed himself up. Perhaps because he basically spent most of his heat asleep in the flood of Arthur's pheromone, he managed to wake up before the alpha. Arthur was sleeping soundly, probably exhausted from taking care of Eugene the day before.
His disappointment decreased slightly with that, and when the dim nightlight reflected on the new ring in his hand, the disappointment melted away like an ice cube in the desert.
Pressing his twitching lips, Eugene slipped out of the guest bedroom and turned on the living room's light. He plopped down on the couch and raised his hand, staring at the ring better under the light.
