Chapter 415: The Challenge! The Southwest Elite Four!
Yuna Su's ace was a Zapdos that had reached Level 99. As a Legendary Pokémon—and
an Electric-type at that—its flight speed was unparalleled. It was no wonder she
had arrived so quickly.
Given her speed, Kenji realized that even if he hadn't shown up, Yuna likely
could have contained the situation before the wildfire reached the nearby
cities. After all, if Moltres was a God of Fire, Zapdos was its equal in
Lightning, capable of summoning torrential rainstorms with a flap of its wings.
"Elite Four Yuna, we meet again," Kenji greeted her.
"Kenji, I have to thank you for getting here so quickly," Yuna replied, her
expression one of genuine relief and gratitude. "If you hadn't intervened, the
consequences would have been catastrophic."
"Protecting the peace within the Huaxia League is my duty as a trainer," Kenji
said modestly.
Yuna looked at him with an appreciative nod, clearly impressed by his sense of
responsibility. Kenji then reached for his belt, unclipped two Poké Balls, and
handed them to her.
Yuna blinked, looking confused. "These are...?"
"You've likely assessed the situation by now," Kenji explained. "Three Moltres
were fighting here. These two balls contain the aggressors. From what I can
tell, they are genetic clones—likely products of the same technology
R-Organization used. I've secured them; I imagine the League's research
department will find them quite valuable."
"Clones?!" Yuna gasped.
In recent months, "Cloning Technology" had become a lightning-rod topic across
the globe. Every regional League was aware that R-Organization had used this
tech to create a terrifying entity whose power rivaled a High-Tier Legendary.
Publicly, every League condemned cloning as a violation of Pokémon ethics.
Privately? That was another story. The prospect of a man-made God was too
powerful a deterrent to ignore. Whoever mastered the creation of a Level 1
Legendary held the ultimate bargaining chip in world politics.
Kenji continued, "The core researchers who developed this tech were taken by
Mewtwo when R-Organization collapsed. I suspect Mewtwo is still forcing them to
continue their work. These two birds are likely the latest results."
Yuna had initially suspected that a secret government project from another
region might have had a containment breach. Kenji's theory was far more
unsettling—and far more plausible.
R-Organization's labs had been leveled by Mewtwo, and the scientists vanished.
No other League could have optimized the technology to produce Legendary-tier
clones in just half a year unless they had been working on it in the shadows for
decades.
"I see..." Yuna nodded, her expression grim as she took the Poké Balls. "I'll
ensure these are transferred to the League's central research division
immediately."
With the fire under control, the cleanup was left to the local investigators and
trainers. Kenji and Yuna had other business to attend to.
Yuna knew why Kenji was here. He was on a warpath to the top, and she was the
next hurdle in his Elite Four challenge. She invited him to fly with her back to
the Southwest League Headquarters.
"Hold on tight," Yuna warned, taking her seat at the front of Zapdos's broad
back.
Kenji nodded and gripped the bird's plumage. Zapdos's feathers weren't soft;
they were stiff, almost metallic, and slightly prickly. Fortunately, his gear
provided enough protection.
Yuna patted the Legendary bird's head. Zapdos let out a high-pitched, screeching
cry, and with a powerful thrust of its wings, it rocketed into the sky.
Crackle-pop-pop!
Every beat of Zapdos's wings sounded like a localized electrical explosion. It
didn't just fly; it tore through the air, generating static that made Kenji's
hair stand on end. Even while holding back to accommodate passengers, a Level 99
Zapdos was terrifyingly fast.
In less than half an hour, they touched down at the Southwest Regional
Headquarters.
Kenji wasn't in a rush to start the match. His team had just come off a grueling
battle with Mason Chu. While the Pokémon Center had patched them up, his
Electivire had expended a massive amount of energy and needed time to fully
recharge its "Thunder God" reserves. He and Yuna agreed to schedule the
challenge for three days later.
The three days passed in a blur of preparation. When the day finally arrived,
Yuna didn't lead him to a standard stadium. Instead, they traveled to a
secluded, ancient valley deep in the mountains.
The valley was a thirty-minute flight from the city, even for Zapdos. As Kenji
looked around, he noticed the walls were scarred with deep grooves and scorched
earth—the unmistakable signs of high-voltage lightning strikes.
"This is where I train my Zapdos," Yuna said, her hands on her hips as she
looked out over the rugged terrain. She turned to the Legendary bird beside her.
"And it's the place where we first met."
"DIAN!" Zapdos flared its wings in a proud display.
The valley floor featured a clear, open area that had been flattened into a
natural battleground, equipped with high-tech sensors and open-air training
gear.
There were no spectators here. No roaring crowds, no announcers, and no human
referees. In this era, the AI-integrated drone cameras and sensor grids could
judge a match with 100% accuracy.
The two took their places at opposite ends of the field. The protective barrier
hummed to life, shimmering as it encased the valley floor.
Beep!
The signal to release Pokémon echoed through the canyon.
"Go! Raichu!" Yuna shouted.
"I'm counting on you! Tyranitar!"
Two streaks of red light lanced into the arena.
"RAI!"
Yuna's Raichu materialized, landing light on its feet. Its long tail whipped
back and forth, sparks dancing on its cheeks as it let out a spirited battle
cry.
But a second later, the sun was blotted out.
A shadow so massive it felt like a mountain was falling covered the entire
arena. Raichu's spirited expression froze. The little Pokémon slowly tilted its
head back... then further back... and further back.
Standing nearly twenty meters tall—comparable to a six-story building—Tyranitar
loomed over the field. Its massive, armored frame felt like a wall of living
stone, its eyes peering down at the tiny Raichu like a god looking at an ant.
"HOOOOOOOOORRRR!"
The Desert Tyrant threw its head back and let out a roar that shook the very
foundation of the valley, the sound waves vibrating through the earth and
echoing endlessly off the cliffs.
The battle for the Southwest title had begun.
