After confirming that Mewtwo was nowhere to be found, Kenji finally shifted his
focus to the two subdued Moltres.
Out of the three birds, the one being double-teamed was the lowest level—only
Level 90—but it possessed the highest potential at S-. It was the only one that
truly met the baseline standard for a Lesser Legendary.
The other two were higher in level (92 and 91) but their potentials were a
lackluster A- and B+. Darkrai's dismissive attitude toward them only confirmed
the obvious: these were genetic counterfeits.
Still, Kenji couldn't help but feel a chill. While A- or B+ potential was "low"
for a Legendary, it was considered elite for any standard Pokémon. These clones
were leagues ahead of the ones R-Organization had field-tested on Dragon Island.
It was clear their cloning technology was evolving. If they kept optimizing the
process, a day might come when they could mass-produce Legendaries that were
indistinguishable from the originals.
The thought was sobering.
"Li…"
In the air, the genuine Moltres stared in bewilderment at the Darkrai and
Beedrill that had suddenly appeared to save it. Its gaze remained sharp, filled
with caution and unease.
It was heavily wounded. Even though this human had intervened, Moltres knew that
humans were often driven by greed. It had encountered countless trainers who had
tried to "bless" it with a Poké Ball, only for Moltres to burn them to a crisp.
Given its current state and the terrifying power Kenji's team displayed, the
bird didn't believe for a second that this human was acting out of the goodness
of his heart.
Kenji saw the wariness in its eyes and didn't waste time with pleasantries.
"Relax, Moltres. I have no interest in catching you," Kenji said, his voice
calm. "I only helped because I need you to disperse these flames. If this forest
fire continues to spread, it'll destroy everything."
Legendary fire wasn't something ordinary Water-types could easily douse. As the
saying went: The one who tied the knot must be the one to untie it. As a Pokémon
that could command the very essence of heat, extinguishing the blaze was a
simple task for the True Moltres.
Kenji wasn't lying about his lack of interest. While a Lesser Legendary was a
prize for most, his current roster—Beedrill, Gyarados, and the rest—were all
destined to reach heights that would eventually overshadow a Level 90 Moltres.
Capturing it would be easy, but domesticating a wounded, prideful God was more
trouble than it was worth.
Moltres locked eyes with Kenji for a long moment. Sensing no malice or hidden
Poké Balls, it let out a sharp cry of acknowledgment and rocketed toward the
clouds.
The next second, the wildfire seemed to take on a life of its own. Under the
bird's command, the flames spanning for miles were pulled upward, swirling like
a massive, fiery cyclone toward the Moltres in the sky.
The sight of the horizon being vacuumed clean of fire was nothing short of
spectacular.
Even for a Legendary, absorbing a blaze of this magnitude took time, but the
immediate threat to the nearby cities was gone.
In the distance, the League Investigator clutched his radio, his face pale with
tension. When he saw the Moltres high in the sky beginning to reel in the
flames, his anxiety snapped into pure exhilaration.
As expected of the Huaxia League Grand Champion!
Meanwhile, Kenji had already turned his back on the spectacle. He stood over the
two unconscious clones, contemplating what to do with them.
He had no use for these "System" failures. During his long talks with Silas
Matsuma at the Battle Tower, he'd learned the grim reality of cloning: the
drawbacks were massive.
First, their potential was locked. They could almost never grow beyond their
initial birth-stats. Second, and more importantly, they had the lifespans of
mayflies. A standard clone might only live for a few months; a Legendary clone
might last a year at most.
Kenji had zero interest in high-maintenance "counterfeit" Gods. However, they
were priceless research subjects for the Huaxia League.
By the time the fire was fully contained—aided by the True Moltres and a frantic
army of trainers with Water-types—the Legendary bird didn't stick around. It
vanished into the horizon, likely heading to a secluded peak to nurse its
wounds.
"Rude bird. Didn't even say thank you," Kenji muttered.
He wasn't actually offended, but it was the principle of the thing. He tossed
the two clones into specialized heavy-duty Poké Balls and made his way back out
of the charred remains of the forest.
When he reached the staging area where the League officials and trainers were
gathered, he noticed the crowd had grown. Standing in the center of the clearing
was a tall, sharp-featured woman who looked to be in her late thirties.
It was Yuna Su, the Southwest Elite Four member and Electric-type specialist.
