Chapter 4 - Fresh start

In a snowy night, a younger moon stood beneath a street light staring down at the lifeless body of a woman, his eyes were as hallow as the corpse before him and his heart was just has dead.

"And I need you to do that"

The street light flickered and the distance between moon and the corpse seemed to grow just a little, moon closed his weary eyes and the hazy figure of a woman and a child walking through the snowy night slowly took shape in his mind. The child was frolicking around in the snow with a huge smile on his face while the mother, while the mother, while....

Blank

Moon's thoughts were soon interrupted by the sound of whispers and mumbling echoing In the night.

He turned around to see who or what it was and there it was, a pale figure bathed in blood, curled up at the corner of the night, whispering and mumbling to itself, saying

"I'm sorry"

"It was a mistake"

"But I...I can still fix things"

"I can fix everything"

Saying that, the figure stood up to it's feet, towering above moon, it's long elongated neck was complimented by it's long legs and arms, it's body was thin, thin enough for moon to see the outline of it's bones and it's face reminded moon of the surface of the moon.

The figure began walking closer to moon, darkness clinging to each of it's steps but It could never get too close to the street light so it stretched out it's arm once again.

It said with a hoarse and broken voice "I can fix it, I can save them all, I can bring back the unknown"

Moon couldn't understand a single word it was saying, everything was filtered or distorted but then moon said

"I don't know what you're saying but can I ask for your name"

Truth be told, moon was frightened but the creature had always been there, mumbling and whispering and it had never once harmed him.

The figure tilted it's head then spoke "*****"

Moon smiled "I'll remember it"

But when he woke up he had forgotten everything.

.....

Moon stood at the other end of a barren field just outside their raggedy house, he was holding a wooden sword in one hand and a small round wooden shield in the other.

At the other end of the field stood celeste, wielding a two handed wooden sword with only one hand while wearing thick metal braces on her wrists and ankles, her stern cold eyes locked unto moon's making him shiver and she asked

"Are you ready"

Moon nodded in confirmation and tightened his grip on his sword and shield.

In a single moment celeste appeared before him, her wooden sword cleaving through the air in an upward motion but moon instinctively blocked the attack with his shield.

The force flung his arm into the air and now he was wide open, celeste spun around delivering a devastating kick to his solar plexus sending him flying a short distance, reeling to the ground.

Moon squirmed on the ground, writhing in pain, there was no moment to waste, celeste was already coming but right now he was finding it difficult to even breathe.

"Wait, give me a minute"

A kick swiftly landed on his face, breaking his nose and blooding his mouth and lips, he could still hear celeste through the the ringing of his ear and the sound of his beating heart.

"Do you think monsters will wait just because you say so, do you think humans will spare you just because you beg for your life or are you not just taking this seriously because am holding a wooden sword"

Moon could barely see her face through his hazy vision but what he saw was her distain of his weakness.

"You have ten seconds to stand up" "one" "two" "three" "four"

Moon gritted his teeth and stood back on his feet, he raised his sword then assumed a combat stance.

"Are you ready"

Moon nodded

Celeste wooden sword cleaved through the air, decending on moon's skull but he quickly side stepped the attack then celeste did something moon didn't even think was possible her attack changed projections, fluidly turning from a downward swing to a side slash.

At the end her sword cut nothing but air, moon retreated the moment he evaded her downward swing and now her vision was obstructed by a cloud of dust.

This wasn't moon's first brawl, he had been through plenty of fights, three had almost cost him his life, he threw his sword and shield to the side and charged through the cloud of dust, tackling celeste

..... but she didn't bugde an inch it was like he slammed himself into a boulder, realisation came first then the fear of what was going to happen to him came second.

"You gave it your best shot and you did well"

Moon smiled "does that mean the spar is over"

"No"

Those words sent a chill down his spine then he gritted his teeth and braced himself for what's to come.

Celeste smiled "okay, that's enough for today"

Moon let out a sigh of relief "thank the gods"

"Moon, you can let go of me now"

Moon shrieked back, realising he'd been holding unto her this entire time, his face turned bright red while she remained expressionless.

"You're better than dog shit at least"

Moon turned towards Atlas, who was sitting at the veranda of the old house, laughing his ass off.

Moon scowled "you should try fighting her sometime"

"No thanks, kid" he paused "Moon, do you even know how to enter the beginner stages of an awakened"

Moon thought For a while then answered "you just have to kill a monster on your own, right"

"Correct, if anyone were to assist you, it won't work so moon until you're able to land a solid hit on celeste, you won't be fighting any monsters"

Moon stared at the expressionless visage of the beautiful yet terrifying girl and the only thought that floated in his mind was.

"Fuck"
