Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Reflections

As Ivandoe and Narissa made their way out of the chamber, the sounds of battle grew louder.

Steel clashed. Energy flared. The distant roars of Shadow Beasts echoed through the corridors.

Their friends were still fighting.

Holding the line.

Buying time.

Ivandoe tightened his grip on Narissa's hand as they moved, his eyes scanning every corner. But despite the chaos around him… his focus kept drifting back to her.

Narissa walked beside him, her steps unsteady, her gaze lowered.

He noticed everything.

The way her hair fell in loose waves down her back.

The slight tremble in her shoulders.

The quiet fragility she tried to hide.

And suddenly—

A thought hit him.

Hard.

Does he really feel something for her…?

Or is this just because of everything they've been through?

The Paradox's earlier warning echoed faintly in his mind.

Emotional instability detected.

Ivandoe frowned slightly.

He had never been one to fall easily.

Never been distracted.

And yet…

There was something about Narissa.

Something that pulled at him in a way he couldn't explain.

"We've got to move," Bert's voice cut in, sharp and urgent as they reached the others.

"The Shadow Beasts are getting stronger. We can't hold them off much longer."

Ivandoe snapped back to reality and nodded.

"Then we don't stop," he said, drawing his sword. "We move together."

He glanced at Narissa again, his expression softening just for a moment.

"I've got you."

Then his focus hardened.

"Let's move out!"

The group pushed forward through the corridors, fighting as they moved. Elara's vines lashed out, restraining incoming beasts. Thane's blasts lit up the path ahead. Jax's gravity pulses knocked enemies off balance.

Narissa stayed close to Ivandoe.

And strangely…

Her presence steadied him.

Even in the chaos, even with danger closing in from all sides—

He felt calmer.

Anchored.

But he pushed the feeling aside.

Mission first.

They finally broke through into the entrance of the ancient structure, where the rest of the team regrouped.

Lyra stood ahead, watching the perimeter.

"We've secured this area for now," she said. "But we can't stay. The Shadow Beasts are evolving."

Ivandoe nodded, sheathing his sword briefly.

"Then we move. We get Narissa somewhere safe… and regroup."

They began moving again.

But something felt off.

Ivandoe's instincts stirred.

He glanced around.

Nothing.

Still…

The feeling remained.

Like they were being watched.

Then—

Narissa gasped.

Ivandoe turned instantly. "What is it?"

Her eyes were wide. Fear filled them.

"I think…" she whispered.

"I think Xorvath is coming."

The air changed.

Colder.

Heavier.

The Paradox activated immediately.

"Team Leader Ivandoe, Xorvath's energy signature detected. Rapid approach confirmed."

Ivandoe's grip tightened around his sword.

"How strong is he?"

There was a brief pause.

Then—

"Power level unknown. However… spatial distortions detected. Reality instability increasing. Recommendation: retreat."

Ivandoe's jaw clenched.

Before he could respond—

A figure emerged from the shadows.

Dark.

Calm.

Terrifying.

Xorvath.

His eyes locked onto Narissa, a slow, cruel smile spreading across his face.

"Ah… Narissa."

His voice was smooth, almost amused.

"It's been… enlightening watching you."

Narissa stepped back, her voice trembling.

"Xorvath… please…"

His gaze shifted.

Locked onto Ivandoe.

"And you…"

A faint chuckle escaped him.

"The wielder of the Paradox."

Ivandoe didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But his grip tightened.

"Oh, I've heard quite a lot about you," Xorvath continued. "And soon…"

His smile widened.

"You'll give me exactly what I want."

The Paradox pulsed urgently.

"Energy signature unstable. Multiple unknown states detected. Unable to predict behavior."

Ivandoe didn't hesitate.

"Fall back!" he ordered.

"Now!"

The team moved instantly.

Elara and Bert pulled Narissa away while the others formed a defensive line.

Ivandoe stayed at the rear, his eyes locked on Xorvath.

Watching.

Measuring.

Xorvath didn't chase.

He just stood there.

Smiling.

"Running already?" he called out. "I expected more."

Ivandoe ignored him.

He knew better.

This wasn't a fight they could win.

Not yet.

The Paradox spoke again.

"Escape route detected. Corridor to the left. Probability of evasion: 63%."

Ivandoe nodded slightly.

"This way!"

They ran.

Fast.

The sound of Xorvath's laughter echoed behind them, sending chills down their spines.

Closer.

Then—

Fading.

Just as their strength began to give out—

A figure appeared ahead.

Lucas Camelous.

Relief hit instantly.

With a calm motion, he raised his staff.

"Time to leave," he said.

A shimmering portal burst open beside him, glowing with soft blue light.

"Quickly."

No hesitation.

One by one, they stepped through.

The sensation twisted around them—pulling, shifting, reforming—

Then—

Silence.

Ivandoe stumbled slightly as they emerged into open air.

A vast courtyard stretched before them, surrounded by towering stone walls and ancient structures.

The Castle of the Ancients.

Safe.

For now.

Lucas stepped beside them, lowering his staff.

"You're secure here," he said.

Ivandoe exhaled slowly.

"Good. We needed this."

As they were led inside, exhaustion finally began to settle in.

But even then…

Ivandoe's thoughts drifted.

Back to Narissa.

Back to the way he felt when she was close.

And the Paradox's warning echoed once more.

Emotional resonance increasing.

Ivandoe clenched his fist slightly.

What did that even mean…?

And why did it feel like everything was only just beginning?
