"She's still so young. What opinions could she possibly have of her own?"
"Besides, as her parents, everything we do is for her own good. She only needs to follow our arrangements, and she'll live a comfortable, peaceful life without worries."
He turned toward his daughter.
"Wouldn't you agree, Toph?"
"…Mm."
Toph lowered her head, her voice dull.
Even though her face couldn't be seen clearly, her reluctance was written all over her posture—yet her parents noticed nothing.
How classic.
Kahn muttered internally, then continued:
"Does she have any friends her own age?"
Poppy smiled gently—too gently.
"It's far too dangerous for her to play with other children. And those poor children outside aren't worthy of staying by Toph's side. The maids and guards at home are company enough."
I see.
Hearing that, Kahn had already pieced the situation together and stayed quiet. Katara and Aang also sensed something was very wrong.
Aang wanted to speak up, but Katara secretly tugged his sleeve to stop him.
The dinner table fell into an uncomfortable silence. Toph sat motionless, head down, hiding her emotions.
Later that night, after returning to their guest room, the group gathered to discuss.
Aang frowned, "Toph's parents are obviously wrong! Why didn't you let me speak up earlier?"
Katara sighed, "I know they're wrong. But it's still their family matter. And we haven't figured out the full situation yet."
"What situation?" Aang asked.
Sokka slapped his forehead.
"The Blind Bandit situation, obviously!"
"To her parents, she's some helpless blind girl stuck at home. They have no idea she's secretly a powerful Earthbending champion. And we don't know whether she wants them to know."
"Right…"
Aang scratched his head.
"So what do we do? Can Toph even join us like this?"
"That depends on what she wants." Kahn turned toward the door. "Right, Miss Toph?"
Toph stiffened outside the doorway. She'd been listening the whole time.
Since she'd been exposed, she pushed the door open without hesitation—dropping her fake "proper lady" act entirely.
"How did you know I was here? And how did you detect me?"
"Just a little trick." Kahn smiled. "If you join us, I'll have plenty of time to explain it. But for now… want to talk about your problem?"
Toph snorted, leaning against the doorframe with her arms crossed.
"What problem? Didn't you hear? My whole life's already been perfectly arranged. No problems at all."
Aang asked gently, "But do you want to live according to their arrangements?"
Kahn laughed, "If she did, she wouldn't have secretly mastered elite Earthbending. And she definitely wouldn't be the Blind Bandit."
Toph's face darkened—but she didn't deny it.
Katara stepped forward.
"Then why not tell your parents? They don't even know how strong you actually are."
"What's the point of telling them?" Toph finally spoke with emotion.
Her fists tightened, "They always think I'm useless. Like I need to be protected every second. They've never cared about what I want. Honestly, they care more about the family's reputation than about me."
In Toph's mind, her parents' "protection" was nothing more than shame—shame that their only daughter was blind.
Katara and Sokka both bristled.
"What kind of parents do that?!"
Kahn wasn't surprised. He'd seen this before in high-status families.
Ty Lee was a perfect example—ignored, underestimated, and shoved aside until she changed everything with her own strength.
Still, this was only Toph's side of the story. So Kahn didn't judge too quickly.
Aang suggested, "If you don't like it here, why not secretly run away?"
He spoke from experience—running away from the Air Nomads was the reason he was frozen for a century.
Toph scoffed, "And go where? They're still my parents."
"Isn't this the perfect opportunity?"
Kahn finally stepped in, his tone confident.
"To restore world peace, someone must teach the Avatar Earthbending. Someone strong, capable, and willing. If that someone joins us, she'd have the perfect reason to leave home—and no one could argue against it."
Everyone's eyes sparkled.
Sokka threw an arm around Kahn dramatically.
"That's brilliant! We're literally on a world-saving mission. Who would dare to stop us? It's perfect!"
"It does sound pretty good…" Toph hesitated, but her resolve wavered.
"But my parents are stubborn. What if they still refuse?"
"Leave that to me." Kahn gave a mysterious smile.
"I'm excellent at dealing with this type. But I'll need everyone to cooperate."
The next morning—
"Ha!"
"AAAAAHHHHH!"
Lao Bei Fong's scream echoed throughout the training yard.
He had just watched his "weak, helpless, blind daughter" absolutely demolish Master Yu—the top Earthbending teacher in Gaoling.
She crushed him with a level of Earthbending so masterful it didn't even resemble the "beginner" she was claimed to be.
Even better, Team Avatar just happened to be nearby… and just happened to witness everything.
Kahn walked calmly up to Lao.
"Last night, you said she was a beginner. So what exactly is this?"
The warm, sunny young man suddenly darkened. A fierce aura rolled off him—one that could rival a Fire Nation general.
Lao trembled, "I—I don't know… she clearly—she—"
"Since she has such extraordinary Earthbending, she must shoulder her responsibility," Kahn said firmly.
"She must teach the Avatar so he can defeat the Fire Lord and restore world peace. You should be proud."
The weight of Kahn's tone—combined with the shock of Toph's abilities and the mention of world peace—crushed any resistance Lao had.
He nodded shakily, "I… I think so."
"Thank you for your righteousness. Your daughter's contribution will be remembered."
And just like that, Kahn's terrifying aura evaporated—replaced instantly by his warm, good-natured smile.
The contrast was so whiplash-inducing that Lao wondered if he hallucinated the whole thing.
By the time Lao recovered, Toph had already boarded Appa with Aang's group.
Kahn bowed politely, "Since everything is settled, we'll take our leave. I wish your family good health. Goodbye!"
Then he hopped onto Appa, and within seconds, they soared into the sky.
Only then did Lao snap back to reality.
"W-wait! What just happened?!"
"I'm finally free!!!"
Toph yelled joyfully as Appa ascended higher.
The others burst into laughter.
Sokka immediately slung his arm over Kahn's shoulders.
"Your acting is insane! I swear, you looked exactly like those scary Fire Nation officers! Even I got nervous!"
"Just average," Kahn replied, waving it off modestly.
He had been a Fire Nation officer… but he'd only been acting just now.
Not like Azula.
He was a good person.
