With Toph officially joining the group, Aang's Earthbending masters were now all assembled.
Their next goal was to train Aang in Earthbending while traveling toward Yi Dao City.
The very first thing Toph did after joining was respond to Kahn's previous invitation for a full-on sparring match.
And then—
As expected, she lost.
"One of you flies in the sky, and the other leaves no trace! That's practically cheating!" Toph snapped, pouting angrily.
In straight-up combat, Toph's talent was top-tier. Her Earthbending was superb, and her seismic sense was razor-sharp.
On the ground, she was practically invincible. She and Kahn even fought to a draw at first.
But in this battle, Kahn made two discoveries.
Toph's First Weakness
Toph had a fatal flaw: as a blind Earthbender, she couldn't sense anything airborne.
And unfortunately for her, Kahn could temporarily fly using Firebending. Once he was in the air, Toph was practically fighting a ghost.
Thus, she was defeated.
Even more unfortunate for her, Aang countered her even harder. As an Airbender, Aang moved lightly and almost silently.
After using Airbending techniques, his steps were nearly undetectable—making him a natural counter to Toph.
She lost twice in a row.
Kahn couldn't help but sigh.
"Flying types counter ground types. Pokémon really didn't deceive me."
Toph's Second Weakness — Earthbending's Upper Limit
Kahn also realized something about Earthbending itself.
Earthbending could control mud, sand, and rock. Its power and utility were excellent.
But even the hardest boulder struggled to withstand the destructive force of Lightningbending or Combustionbending.
In short: Earthbending had trouble keeping up with Firebending's destructive techniques.
Of course, Lightningbending was a royal technique and Combustionbending was a dangerous, rare ability—only a handful of people could use either one.
Toph's seismic sense was also a rare exception.
Only a monster like Kahn could master both advanced Firebending forms.
Usually, Earthbending and Firebending simply depended on the bender's skill.
After watching the match, Aang and the others gained a deeper understanding of their own abilities.
Especially Kahn—he was the strongest Firebender they had ever seen.
His flames were controlled, precise, and frighteningly efficient.
Instead of blazing out of control like the Fire Nation soldiers they had encountered, his fire was like a tamed beast—fearsome, yet disciplined.
After seeing that display, Aang was completely convinced.
"Kahn, when can we start learning Firebending?" he asked eagerly.
"Be patient," Kahn said with a mysterious smile.
Aang was left confused and anxious.
A Soft Landing… Literally
As nighttime approached after another day of travel, Toph jumped off Appa and felt the softness under her feet.
"The ground here is nice. The grass feels comfortable."
"That's not grass," Sokka corrected. "That's Appa's fur."
Spring had arrived, and Appa was shedding—A LOT. The fallen fur practically formed a natural carpet.
Momo picked up a handful, chewed it twice, and immediately spat it out in disgust.
Katara shuddered. "Ugh, that's so gross."
"It's not gross," Aang laughed. "It's spring. Everything's growing again. Appa deserves a fresh coat too."
Kahn glanced at the fur everywhere and felt grateful that his Southeast Northwest didn't shed. He clapped his hands.
"Let's give Appa a bath tomorrow. If he keeps shedding while walking, we'll leave a trail straight to us."
Everyone agreed immediately.
Camp Setup — Trouble with Teamwork
As they set up camp, Aang packed the bags, Sokka pitched the tent, Kahn tended the fire, and Katara fetched water.
Toph lay leisurely on the ground, completely unbothered.
Katara frowned. "Toph, when we camp, we usually work together, so—"
Toph shrugged. "Don't worry about me. I can take care of myself."
Katara tried again, "What I mean is—"
"Hey, Toph!"
Kahn suddenly called out.
"This ground is uneven. Can you level it with Earthbending so we can place the tent?"
"That's it? Easy."
Toph stomped her foot. The ground instantly flattened into a smooth surface.
"You're a big help," Kahn said. "We'll eat together in a bit. Don't fill up on rations."
Katara added, smiling, "Yes, come join us. Try my cooking."
Toph paused, then tucked her rations away. "Alright."
Katara relaxed and thanked Kahn quietly.
"It's nothing," Kahn replied. "Toph never had friends. She doesn't understand teamwork yet. But she's kind—she just needs guidance."
Katara sighed. "I was too impatient. I'll talk to her later."
"I used to take care of a kid whose personality was way worse than Toph's," Kahn chuckled.
Katara stared curiously at his back. The more time passed, the more mysterious his past became.
Midnight Disturbance
Everyone went to sleep early.
But in the middle of the night, Toph jolted awake.
She sensed vibrations approaching rapidly.
She burst into the tents. "Wake up! Something's coming toward us!"
"What is it?" Aang asked sleepily.
Toph listened closely.
"It's like an avalanche, but… not. I've never felt movement like this."
Sokka rubbed his eyes. "Your perception is too good, seriously."
Katara asked, "Should we leave?"
"I think we should see what it is first," Kahn said. "We can't keep running forever."
Aang agreed, so they all got on Appa and flew up to a high ledge.
Looking down, they saw it clearly.
"That's a Fire Nation metal machine!" Sokka shouted.
A massive metal vehicle, steam hissing from its pipes.
"That's a Fire Nation transport vehicle used for hauling supplies," Kahn identified immediately.
"So it's not coming for us?" Aang sighed in relief.
Katara frowned. "But… it is definitely heading our way."
"Maybe it just happens to be on this route," Sokka muttered. "Let's go back and—"
Before he could finish, the transport vehicle screeched to a halt beneath them.
A carriage door opened.
Three figures on lizard mounts stepped out.
Aang's team froze.
Kahn's eyes lit up.
"It's THEM!"
Aang's group and Kahn spoke at the same time—but their tones were polar opposites.
"You know them?" Toph asked.
Katara swallowed nervously.
"We met them in Omashu. They're dangerous. One uses strange blue fire. Another can make people lose their bending and turn weak. They're terrifying."
Aang looked at Kahn. "Kahn… you know them?"
"Yes," Kahn said slowly. "You could say that."
He stared down at the three familiar silhouettes.
Azula.
Ty Lee.
Mai.
He hadn't expected to meet the trio from this world so soon.
Suddenly, he turned.
"You all wait here. I'll go meet them."
And with that, Kahn stepped forward.
