The group followed behind Kahn, all of them looking confused as he led them down an unfamiliar path.
Kahn walked at the front and explained casually:
"This is a Spiritbending technique. It lets you perceive the position of a spirit directly—no matter the obstacles. Only someone with Spiritbending talent can learn and use it."
Katara's eyes widened.
"Spiritbending? There are Arts other than the Four Bending Arts?"
Kahn nodded with a small smile.
"Actually, Spiritbending is the oldest Art humans ever had—long before the Lion Turtles bestowed the Four Bending Arts."
Sokka groaned loudly.
"Great. More mystical hocus-pocus. Can't you leave us ordinary people at least one thing that isn't broken by magic?"
Kahn continued, ignoring him:
"People with Spiritbending talent can see spirits, astral project, and enter the Spirit World. That's the basic level, anyway. Speaking of which—you all know about the Spirit World, right?"
Aang lit up instantly.
"I know! I've astral projected before and met my past lives. I even entered the Spirit World once. So that means… I have Spiritbending talent!"
"The Avatar is literally the bridge between humans and spirits," Kahn said with a shrug. "It would be weird if you didn't have Spiritbending talent."
Then he paused, remembering something.
Guru Pathik had once told him he was waiting for the Avatar's return so he could teach him Spiritbending.
And now… the Avatar was right here.
"Oh, that reminds me," Kahn said. "The person who taught me Spiritbending is named Guru Pathik. When he was young, he was good friends with an Air Nomad master.
That Air Nomad entrusted him with teaching you Spiritbending someday. He's been waiting for you at the Eastern Air Temple."
Aang froze.
"I… I definitely will visit him."
Hearing this, his expression became complicated—because it forced him to remember just how many people had waited for him for a hundred years… while he slept.
Katara quickly broke the heavy mood.
"The Eastern Air Temple is on the eastern side of the Earth Kingdom, right? It fits our route. We can go after we leave Gaoling."
Kahn nodded.
"And before that, I can teach you the basics of Spiritbending. That way, when you meet Guru Pathik, you'll learn faster."
Katara added, smiling, "But that means you're going to be really busy, Aang. Your Earthbending master is pretty much found, and you still need to start Firebending lessons too."
Aang instantly panicked.
"There's too much to learn! How am I supposed to handle all of this?"
Kahn patted him on the shoulder and used the classic teacher line from his past life:
"The hard part is only a few months. Grit your teeth, defeat Ozai, and everything will be fine after."
"…That kind of makes sense," Aang muttered.
"Alright, we're here."
They finally arrived. In front of them stood a massive, luxurious estate stretching across thousands of square meters, guarded by two men at the gate.
Sokka blinked skeptically.
"This rich-people palace? And that girl lives here?"
Aang pointed at an emblem carved over the gate—a flying boar.
"I saw that symbol in my vision. This is definitely the place."
"Let's sneak in and check it out," Kahn said.
"Let's go," Aang agreed.
But Sokka suddenly held up a hand.
"Wait—why are we sneaking in? Aang, you're the Avatar. Can't we just walk in like normal people?"
"Uh…" ×2
Aang and Kahn froze.
Yeah. That… made sense.
Aang was too used to being hunted to remember he was famous. And Kahn, raised in the Fire Nation capital, had only seen "Avatar Aang" as a wanted poster.
So the group walked straight to the main gate and announced themselves.
They were immediately welcomed inside with overwhelming enthusiasm—and invited to a luxurious dinner.
Only then did they realize this was the Bei Fong family, the wealthiest family in Gaoling… and possibly the entire Earth Kingdom.
Toph—now in her dignified "proper lady" persona—sat quietly and gracefully at the table. She looked nothing like the fierce Blind Bandit from the arena.
"Avatar Aang, thank you for honoring our Bei Fong household," Poppy said warmly.
Lao Bei Fong nodded politely.
"And from your perspective, young Avatar… how long do you think this war will last?"
Aang replied honestly, "I want to defeat the Fire Lord before the end of summer. But first, I need to find an Earthbending teacher."
At this, Toph's expression twitched.
Lao gestured to a man beside him.
"This is Master Yu—the best Earthbending teacher in Gaoling. My daughter Toph has studied under him since childhood."
Aang was not impressed.
But Toph caught his attention—and he said boldly:
"Then she must be a great Earthbender! Maybe even good enough to teach someone!"
Suddenly, Aang yelped in pain—clearly kicked under the table.
He didn't need his eyes to know: it was Toph.
Unfazed, Lao continued,
"I'm afraid not. She is just a beginner. And as you can see—blind, small, and fragile. To protect her from danger, we keep her hidden at home.
Outsiders don't even know she exists. So please, don't spread word of her after you leave."
Toph clenched her fists silently, lowering her head.
That was when Kahn, who had been listening quietly until now, suddenly spoke:
"You hid your daughter from the world to 'protect her'… but did you ever ask her whether she wanted that?"
The entire table went silent.
Toph's head snapped up—shocked that someone had finally said it.
And Lao Bei Fong's face began to harden.
