Chapter 7 - Chapter seven:Blood and Shadows

The footsteps stopped.

For a split second, the world held its breath.

Then—

A figure stepped into the corridor.

Tall. Cloaked in black. The air around him seemed to ripple, like heat rising from fire. His face was partially hidden, but his eyes…

They glowed.

Cold. Silver. Inhuman.

Aria felt it instantly—that same suffocating pressure she had felt in the forest. In the archive. In the cell.

But stronger.

Much stronger.

"Well," the man said, his voice smooth and echoing unnaturally through the narrow passage. "This is unexpected."

Kael shifted slightly in front of Aria, his body tense. "Stay behind me."

Aria didn't move.

Her fear was still there—but something else was rising too.

Curiosity.

Anger.

The man tilted his head, studying her like she was something rare. "So this is the girl."

Aria clenched her fists. "I have a name."

A faint smile touched his lips. "Of course you do."

He took a step forward.

The walls flickered.

"My name," he continued, "is Lucien. I serve the Council."

Kael's voice dropped. "High Enforcer."

That title clearly meant something—because even Kael's usual confidence dimmed just a little.

Aria noticed.

And that scared her more than anything.

Lucien's gaze shifted between them. "You've caused quite a disturbance tonight," he said lightly. "Breaking out of confinement, infiltrating restricted archives, aligning with traitors…"

His eyes settled on Aria again.

"…and awakening something that should have remained dormant."

Aria's heart skipped.

"I didn't awaken anything," she said.

Lucien smiled.

"You opened the box."

Silence.

Aria's breath caught.

"How do you—"

"Because," he interrupted softly, "we've been waiting for that moment for a very long time."

Kael stepped forward, placing himself fully between them now. "You're not taking her."

Lucien sighed, almost disappointed. "You always were predictable, Kael."

The temperature in the corridor dropped sharply.

Frost began creeping along the stone walls.

Aria shivered.

Kael didn't.

Instead, his eyes began to glow—faintly at first, then brighter. A deep, electric blue.

Aria froze.

"What…?" she whispered.

Kael didn't look back. "You wanted answers," he said quietly. "Start watching."

Lucien moved first.

He didn't run.

He vanished.

One second he was there—

The next, he was right in front of Kael.

A sharp crack echoed as their powers collided.

Energy exploded outward, slamming into the walls. Aria was thrown back, hitting the stone hard.

Her ears rang.

Her vision blurred.

But she forced herself to look.

Kael and Lucien were locked in place—hands gripping each other's arms, energy surging between them like lightning.

Blue against silver.

Light against shadow.

"You've improved," Lucien murmured.

Kael's jaw tightened. "I'm not the same person you trained."

Lucien's smile darkened. "No. You're worse."

He twisted suddenly.

A shockwave burst outward.

Kael was thrown across the corridor, slamming into the wall with a sickening crack.

"Kael!" Aria shouted.

Lucien turned slowly toward her.

And now—nothing stood between them.

Her heart pounded.

Run.

That instinct screamed inside her.

But her feet didn't move.

Lucien approached, calm and controlled, like a predator that already knew the hunt was over.

"You're important," he said. "More than you understand."

Aria forced herself to speak. "Then stop talking like I'm an object and explain!"

That made him pause.

Just slightly.

Interesting.

"You have spirit," he said. "That will make this easier."

"For who?" she snapped.

"For us."

He reached out.

Aria flinched—but didn't step back.

His fingers hovered inches from her forehead.

"Don't," Kael's voice growled from behind.

Lucien didn't turn. "You should stay down."

Kael staggered to his feet anyway, blood at the corner of his mouth, eyes still glowing.

"Touch her," he said, "and I won't hold back."

Lucien sighed again, almost bored. "You already aren't."

Then—

He moved his hand closer.

And everything changed.

The moment Lucien's fingers brushed Aria's skin—

A surge of energy exploded through her body.

Not pain.

Not exactly.

It was… overwhelming.

Light flooded her vision.

Voices whispered in her ears.

Images flashed—

The monument.

The forest.

The woman with black eyes.

Arachne.

And something else.

Something vast.

Watching.

Waiting.

Aria gasped, her body lifting slightly off the ground as power pulsed around her.

The markings on the corridor walls ignited, glowing bright blue-green.

Lucien's expression changed for the first time.

Surprise.

"Well…" he whispered.

Kael stared, stunned. "Aria…?"

She couldn't answer.

The energy was too much.

Too loud.

Too alive.

Then—

It burst.

A wave of force blasted outward, throwing Lucien backward down the corridor.

Kael shielded his eyes as the light faded.

Aria collapsed to her knees, gasping for air.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Shocked.

Lucien slowly pushed himself up from the ground.

And he was smiling.

Not mocking.

Not amused.

Genuinely… impressed.

"Incredible," he said softly.

Kael rushed to Aria's side. "Hey—hey, look at me. Are you okay?"

Aria blinked, her vision slowly clearing. "I… I don't know what just happened…"

Kael exhaled. "Neither do I."

Lucien approached again—but slower this time.

Careful.

"You see now?" he said. "You are not ordinary."

Aria looked up at him, her fear returning—but different now.

Stronger.

Focused.

"What am I?" she demanded.

Lucien stopped a few feet away.

For once—

He didn't answer immediately.

Before he could speak—

A distant explosion shook the tunnel.

Then another.

Kael's expression hardened. "The Resistance…"

Maya.

The others.

Aria's chest tightened. "We can't just leave them!"

Lucien glanced toward the sound, mildly irritated. "This is becoming inconvenient."

Kael helped Aria to her feet. "We're done here."

Lucien didn't stop them.

Didn't attack.

He just watched.

"Run if you like," he said calmly. "But it changes nothing."

Aria hesitated.

"Why?" she asked. "Why are you letting us go?"

Lucien's eyes met hers.

"Because now," he said quietly, "I've seen enough."

A chill ran down her spine.

"Seen what?"

His smile returned—slow and dangerous.

"The beginning."

Kael pulled her away before she could ask more.

They disappeared into the darkness of the tunnel, the sounds of chaos growing louder behind them.

Aria's mind raced.

Power.

Bloodline.

The Council.

Lucien's words echoed in her head.

The beginning.

Whatever this was—

It was only getting worse.

Far behind them, Lucien stood alone in the corridor.

He touched the wall, where the glowing marks slowly faded.

"After all this time…" he murmured.

His eyes gleamed.

"She's finally awake."
