Chapter 9 - Chapter nine:Between Fire and Silence

The night air outside Ravenwood felt colder than before.

Or maybe it was just Aria.

They moved quickly through the forest, the faint glow of the town fading behind them. No one spoke at first. The only sounds were their footsteps and the distant echo of something… not quite natural… stirring in the darkness.

Aria walked ahead.

Not leading.

Just refusing to fall behind.

"You're going the wrong way," Kael's voice came from behind her.

She didn't stop. "Then guide me. Don't order me."

A pause.

Then footsteps quickened, and Kael moved beside her.

Cassius followed a few steps behind, silent—but watching.

Always watching.

"You're angry," Kael said quietly.

Aria let out a short laugh. "That's your observation?"

"You almost died tonight."

"I did die tonight," she snapped, stopping suddenly. "The version of me that didn't know any of this? Gone."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"That's not what I meant."

"Then say what you mean," she fired back.

Before he could respond—

Cassius spoke.

"She means she doesn't trust either of us."

Both of them turned to him.

Cassius stepped closer, his expression calm but sharp. "And honestly? She shouldn't."

Aria blinked.

Kael frowned. "You're not helping."

"I'm being honest."

"Convenient."

Cassius smirked slightly. "You want to talk about convenient? Or should we talk about how much you didn't tell her?"

The tension snapped tight.

Aria looked between them. "Okay—clearly there's something I'm missing."

Kael's voice dropped. "This isn't the time."

"No," Cassius said. "This is exactly the time."

Silence stretched.

Then Cassius turned fully to Aria.

"You asked what you are," he said. "But you haven't asked what he is."

Aria's heart skipped.

Slowly, she looked at Kael.

"What does that mean?"

Kael didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

"Kael?" she pressed.

His eyes flickered—not glowing this time, just… conflicted.

"I was part of the Council," he said finally.

The words landed hard.

Aria stared at him. "What?"

"Not just part of it," Cassius added quietly. "He was one of their strongest."

Aria stepped back slightly. "You're joking."

"I'm not," Kael said.

Her mind raced.

"You—" she pointed at him, "—you've been warning me about them, fighting them, acting like you're against them—"

"I am against them."

"You were them!"

His silence hit like a wall.

Aria laughed—but there was no humor in it. "Wow. That's… that's actually insane."

"I left," Kael said. "That matters."

"Why?" she demanded.

"For you."

That stopped her.

"What?"

Kael stepped closer, his voice low. "I knew about you before you came to Ravenwood."

Her breath caught.

"They told me to watch for signs," he continued. "To track any activation tied to your bloodline."

Aria felt something twist painfully in her chest.

"So I was just a mission to you?"

"No."

"Then what was I?!"

Kael hesitated.

And that hesitation hurt more than anything.

Cassius stepped in again, his voice cutting through the tension.

"He didn't expect to care."

Kael shot him a glare. "Stay out of this."

"Why?" Cassius challenged. "Because I'm saying what you won't?"

Aria looked between them, overwhelmed. "Stop. Both of you."

They did.

Immediately.

Her voice shook slightly now. "I need the truth. All of it. No more half-stories."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"When I first saw you," he said, "you were just a target. Someone I was supposed to monitor."

Aria swallowed hard.

"But then…" he continued, softer now, "you didn't act like someone tied to that kind of power. You were normal. Curious. Stubborn."

A faint, sad smile touched his lips.

"Annoying."

Despite everything, Aria almost reacted to that.

Almost.

"So I broke protocol," he said. "I got close. Too close."

"And then what?" she asked quietly.

Kael met her eyes.

"And then I realized I didn't want them to find you."

Silence fell.

But it wasn't empty.

It was full of things unsaid.

Cassius shifted slightly, his tone quieter now. "That's when he betrayed the Council."

Aria blinked. "You risked all of that… for me?"

Kael didn't answer directly.

"I made a choice," he said.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

Aria turned away, running a hand through her hair.

Her emotions were a mess.

Anger.

Confusion.

Something else she didn't want to name.

"And you?" she asked, turning to Cassius. "Where do you fit in all this?"

Cassius didn't hesitate.

"I was sent to kill you."

Kael stiffened.

Aria went still.

"…what?"

Cassius held her gaze. "Before Kael defected, your awakening was considered a threat. I was assigned to eliminate you if necessary."

Her heart dropped.

"But you didn't," she said.

"No."

"Why?"

For the first time—

Cassius hesitated.

"I saw something," he said finally.

Aria frowned. "What?"

"Potential," he replied. "Not just power. Choice."

He stepped closer.

"And unlike the Council… I believe that matters."

The air between the three of them shifted.

Different now.

More complicated.

More dangerous.

"So let me get this straight," Aria said slowly. "One of you was sent to watch me. The other was sent to kill me."

Kael winced slightly.

Cassius didn't.

"And now," she continued, "both of you are helping me?"

"Yes," they said at the same time.

They glanced at each other.

Tension sparked again.

Aria let out a breath. "That's… a lot."

"No argument there," Cassius said lightly.

Kael didn't smile.

A sudden sound echoed through the trees.

A low… growl.

Not animal.

Not human.

Something else.

All three of them froze.

Kael's expression hardened instantly. "We're not alone."

Cassius's eyes scanned the darkness. "That didn't come from the Council."

Aria's pulse spiked. "Then what is it?"

Neither of them answered.

That was worse.

The growl came again.

Closer.

Heavier.

The air itself seemed to vibrate with it.

Aria felt it in her chest—that same pull as before.

The same presence.

Reacting.

"It's because of me," she whispered.

Kael glanced at her. "What?"

"I can feel it," she said. "Whatever that thing is… it feels me."

Cassius's voice dropped. "Then we don't run."

Kael looked at him sharply. "Are you serious?"

"If it's drawn to her," Cassius said, "it won't stop chasing us."

He turned to Aria.

"You wanted answers?"

Her heart pounded.

"Yes…"

"Then this is where it starts."

The trees shifted.

The shadows deepened.

And something stepped into the clearing.

Tall.

Twisted.

Its form barely human, its eyes glowing with a faint blue-green light—like the energy inside Aria.

Her breath caught.

"It's… connected to me…"

The creature tilted its head.

As if it understood.

Kael stepped slightly in front of her.

Cassius moved to her other side.

For once—

They stood together.

Aria's fear surged.

But beneath it—

Something else rose.

That same power.

That same fire.

She took a step forward.

Both men reacted instantly.

"Aria—don't," Kael warned.

"Wait," Cassius said, more curious than afraid.

The creature let out a low, rumbling sound.

The ground beneath them trembled.

Aria's hands trembled too.

But she didn't stop.

"I'm done running," she said quietly.

The energy inside her pulsed—

Stronger.

Brighter.

Alive.

And for the first time—

She reached for it.
