Chapter 10 - Chapter Ten:When Fire Chooses

It didn't charge.

It shifted—like smoke being pulled through the air, its form stretching unnaturally before snapping back into shape just a few feet closer.

Aria's breath hitched.

Her instincts screamed at her to step back.

But she didn't.

"I said don't move," Kael warned, his voice low, urgent.

"I'm not running," she replied, her voice quieter—but steadier than she felt.

Cassius watched her closely, something sharp and calculating in his eyes. "Let her."

Kael shot him a look. "You're not serious."

"She needs to understand what she can do."

"And if she loses control?"

Cassius didn't hesitate.

"Then we deal with it."

The creature let out a low, distorted sound—almost like a voice trying to form words and failing.

Its glowing eyes locked onto Aria.

Not Kael.

Not Cassius.

Her.

The air around them thickened.

Aria felt it again—that pull. That connection. Like invisible threads tying her to the thing in front of her.

Her heartbeat slowed.

Strangely.

Unnaturally.

"It's not just attacking," she whispered.

Kael frowned. "What do you mean?"

"It's… reacting."

Cassius stepped slightly closer, intrigued. "To you?"

Aria nodded faintly.

The creature tilted its head again.

Mirroring her.

Kael didn't like that.

"Aria, step back. Now."

But she shook her head.

"No… if I run, it follows. If I fight blindly, I lose."

She swallowed.

"But if it's connected to me…"

She took another step forward.

"…then maybe I can control it."

"Or it controls you," Kael snapped.

Aria glanced back at him.

"And what? You'll save me again?"

The words slipped out sharper than she intended.

Kael froze.

Something flickered in his eyes—hurt.

Real.

Cassius noticed.

And didn't hide his reaction.

"Careful," he said quietly to Aria. "He doesn't like losing control of a situation."

Kael's gaze snapped to him. "Stay out of this."

Cassius smirked faintly. "Or what?"

Tension flared.

Not just about the creature anymore.

Something deeper.

Something personal.

"Stop it!" Aria snapped.

Both of them went silent.

Immediately.

Her chest rose and fell with uneven breaths.

"This isn't about your rivalry," she said. "This is about me."

She turned back to the creature.

"And whatever this is becoming."

The creature stepped closer.

Now only a few feet away.

The ground beneath it darkened, veins of that same blue-green light spreading outward like roots.

Aria felt a sharp pulse in her chest.

Pain.

Then—

Warmth.

"Okay…" she whispered. "Okay… I feel it…"

Her hands lifted slightly, almost on instinct.

The air around her shimmered.

Kael tensed. "Aria…"

Cassius didn't speak.

He just watched.

"Don't fight it," Cassius said softly. "Understand it."

Kael glanced at him sharply. "You don't even know what she's tapping into."

"And you do?" Cassius shot back.

Kael didn't answer.

Aria blocked them out.

She had to.

Because the moment she focused—

She heard it.

Not with her ears.

But inside her mind.

A whisper.

Faint.

Broken.

…home…

Her breath caught.

"What…?"

The creature froze.

As if it heard her too.

"Aria?" Kael stepped closer.

"I think… it's trying to communicate," she said slowly.

"That's not possible," Kael said.

"It is," Cassius countered.

They both looked at her.

"Because I hear it," she said.

The creature took one final step forward.

Now directly in front of her.

Close enough to touch.

Kael's body tensed like he was ready to pull her back at any second.

Cassius didn't move.

Aria hesitated.

Then—

She reached out.

"Aria, don't—" Kael started.

Too late.

Her fingers brushed the creature's surface.

The world shattered.

Light exploded behind her eyes.

Images slammed into her—

Ancient forests.

A sky split in two.

Shadows crawling between worlds.

And a figure—

Massive.

Endless.

Watching.

Aria gasped, her body trembling as the energy surged through her.

The creature let out a sharp, echoing cry—

Then—

Collapsed.

Its form breaking apart into fragments of glowing light that dissolved into the air.

Gone.

Silence.

Heavy.

Unreal.

Aria stumbled backward.

Kael caught her instantly.

"I've got you," he said, his voice tight.

Her breathing was uneven, her body weak—but her eyes were wide.

"I saw it…" she whispered.

"What?" he asked.

But before she could answer—

Cassius stepped closer.

"What did you see?" he pressed.

His tone wasn't gentle.

It was urgent.

Intense.

Aria looked between them.

"I don't know," she admitted. "Something big… something ancient… and that thing—" she gestured to where the creature had been "—it wasn't attacking me."

Kael frowned. "Then what was it doing?"

Aria hesitated.

Then said it.

"Coming back."

Silence fell again.

Even heavier than before.

Cassius exhaled slowly. "That confirms it."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Confirms what?"

Cassius looked directly at Aria.

"You're not just connected to the Veil Keeper."

A pause.

"You're a gateway."

The word hit differently.

Aria's stomach dropped. "A gateway… to what?"

Cassius didn't answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

Kael stepped in, his voice sharper now. "We're not jumping to conclusions."

"We're past that," Cassius said. "You saw what just happened."

"I saw her survive," Kael shot back.

"And I saw her activate something that shouldn't exist outside the Veil."

The tension snapped again.

Aria pushed herself out of Kael's grip slightly.

"Stop talking about me like I'm not here," she said.

Both of them went quiet.

Again.

She took a breath.

"I don't fully understand what I am," she said. "But I know one thing."

She looked at Kael.

Then at Cassius.

"I'm not a weapon."

Her voice hardened.

"And I'm not choosing sides between you two."

Cassius raised an eyebrow. "Who said anything about choosing?"

Kael didn't speak—but his gaze didn't leave her.

Aria felt it.

That pull again.

Not from the power this time.

From them.

Two different forces.

Two different paths.

"You don't trust me," she said to Kael.

His expression tightened. "That's not true."

"You lied to me."

"I protected you."

"That's not the same thing."

She turned to Cassius.

"And you…"

He waited.

"You scare me less," she admitted.

Kael stiffened.

"But that doesn't mean I trust you either."

Cassius smirked faintly. "Fair."

Aria stepped back from both of them.

Creating space.

"I need time," she said. "To think. To understand this."

Kael nodded slowly. "Then we find somewhere safe."

Cassius glanced at the dark forest around them. "That might be harder than you think."

As if on cue—

A distant sound echoed through the trees.

Not one creature this time.

Many.

Aria's heart dropped.

"They're coming back…"

Cassius's expression darkened. "No."

Kael tensed. "That's not just them."

The sounds grew louder.

Closer.

Surrounding.

Cassius looked at Aria.

"You didn't just connect to one."

A pause.

"You called them."

The realization hit like a shockwave.

Aria's breath caught.

"I didn't mean to—"

"I know," Kael said quickly. "But intent doesn't change what happens next."

The forest shifted.

Shadows moving.

Eyes glowing.

Dozens.

Cassius exhaled sharply. "Alright… now we run."

Kael almost laughed. "Now you agree?"

Cassius glanced at him. "Don't get used to it."

Kael grabbed Aria's hand.

Cassius moved ahead.

For the first time—

They moved as one.

Behind them—

The forest came alive.

And whatever Aria had awakened…

It wasn't done with her.
