Uncle Jia had the lights on when they arrived. The entrance was warm and the house smelled like food, and both children stopped just inside the doorway and looked around without saying anything.
Ji Yuzhe was already standing in the hall. He'd heard the car.
Feng Suyin gave him the short version — hospital, corridor, no missing report, Bai surname, father sick somewhere in the building. He listened without interrupting.
"No one filed a report?" he said.
"Nothing in the system." She glanced down at the twins, who had pressed themselves against her sides and were staring at Ji Yuzhe's face. Yilin had opened her mouth once and closed it again. "I couldn't leave them."
"Of course not." He said it like there'd never been any other option. "They're welcome here."
"Their room is prepared, Miss Feng," Uncle Jia said from the doorway to the kitchen.
Ji Yuzhe turned his head slightly in the children's direction. He couldn't see their faces. "What are their names?"
