Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Next Generation

Naruto: The Second Chance of Obito Uchiha

Chapter 6: The Next Generation

The morning sun bathed Konoha in a warm golden glow.

Training Ground Seven was unusually crowded.

Instead of a single squad, several newly graduated genin teams had gathered for a joint training exercise organized by the village.

Team Minato arrived to find familiar faces already waiting.

Asuma Sarutobi leaned casually against a tree with his arms crossed.

Beside him stood Kurenai Yuhi, calmly observing the other teams.

A few yards away, Genma Shiranui lazily twirled a senbon between his fingers while Raidō Namiashi laughed at something Ebisu had said.

And in the center of it all…

A boy in a green jumpsuit repeatedly challenged someone to a duel.

"Kakashi!"

Might Guy pointed dramatically.

"I challenge you to a match!"

Kakashi didn't even look up from the small book he was pretending to read.

"No."

Guy gasped.

"You refused without even thinking!"

"I did think."

"For half a second!"

Rin couldn't help but laugh.

"They're at it already."

Obito smiled.

Some things truly never changed.

Guy finally noticed Team Minato.

His eyes immediately landed on Obito.

"You!"

Obito blinked.

"Me?"

"You're Kakashi's teammate!"

Guy grinned brightly.

"That means you must also be my rival!"

Obito scratched the back of his head.

"I don't remember agreeing to that."

"Excellent!"

Guy gave him a thumbs-up.

"I accept your acceptance!"

"…I didn't accept."

Guy was already striking dramatic poses.

Rin covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.

Even Kakashi looked mildly amused.

"Good luck."

Obito sighed.

"Thanks for the help."

Minato gathered the young shinobi together.

"Today's exercise isn't about winning."

"It's about learning from one another."

The genin nodded.

Different teams were paired together for sparring matches.

Asuma faced Genma.

Raidō squared off against Ebisu.

Kurenai practiced genjutsu against another kunoichi.

Then Minato called the next match.

"Obito."

"And Guy."

Guy pumped his fist.

"Finally!"

Obito smiled nervously.

"This is going to be loud, isn't it?"

"It absolutely is!" Guy declared.

"Begin!"

Guy charged immediately.

His taijutsu was explosive.

Powerful.

Direct.

Obito dodged the opening kick before stepping aside.

Guy continued attacking without slowing down.

Each strike came with enthusiastic shouting.

"YOUTH!"

"DYNAMIC!"

"PASSION!"

Obito couldn't help laughing.

"You always fight like this?"

Guy flashed a bright smile.

"Of course!"

"It keeps my youthful spirit burning!"

Obito shook his head.

You're exactly the same…

Even after all these years.

The thought made him smile.

He remembered Guy standing against Madara during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

Opening all Eight Gates.

Risking everything.

The strongest taijutsu user in history.

Looking at the energetic genin before him…

It was hard to imagine that future.

Guy launched another kick.

Obito blocked it before redirecting the momentum just enough to send Guy stumbling backward.

Not enough to embarrass him.

Just enough to end the exchange.

Minato raised a hand.

"That's enough."

Guy laughed loudly.

"You're strong!"

Obito rubbed the back of his head.

"I got lucky."

Kakashi sighed.

"You say that every time."

The surrounding genin laughed.

After the sparring concluded, everyone gathered beneath the shade of several large trees.

Lunch boxes were opened.

Conversations filled the air.

Asuma leaned toward Obito.

"So…"

"I heard you're always trying to beat Kakashi."

Obito grinned.

"I wouldn't say always."

Kakashi looked over.

"He means always."

Everyone laughed.

Even Kakashi allowed himself a faint smile.

Rin noticed it immediately.

"There it is!"

"What?"

"You smiled."

"I did not."

"You absolutely did."

Guy pointed dramatically.

"I witnessed it too!"

Kakashi sighed.

"This is exhausting."

As the afternoon continued, Minato and the other jonin instructors watched from a distance.

"They're getting along well," one instructor commented.

Minato nodded.

"They'll depend on each other someday."

His voice grew quieter.

"I just hope that day never comes because of war."

The other jonin fell silent.

Rumors continued spreading across the village.

Border skirmishes.

Missing patrols.

Growing hostility between the Five Great Nations.

Everyone hoped diplomacy would prevail.

But experienced shinobi knew better.

Peace was becoming fragile.

As the gathering came to an end, Guy walked beside Obito.

"Next time, I'll beat you!"

Obito laughed.

"I'll be waiting."

Guy pointed confidently.

"Our rivalry begins today!"

Obito smiled.

"Sure."

Watching Guy run off while shouting about youth made Obito chuckle.

Some things really did never change.

That evening, Obito walked home alone.

The streets were peaceful.

Children played outside.

Shopkeepers greeted passing customers.

Families shared dinner together.

He slowed his pace.

In his previous life…

He never appreciated moments like these.

Back then, he was always focused on becoming stronger.

Then later…

He was consumed by revenge.

Now…

He understood their value.

These ordinary days were precious.

Because they wouldn't last forever.

He looked toward the Hokage Monument.

The Third Great Ninja War was drawing closer.

Soon…

The children laughing in the streets would become shinobi on the battlefield.

Some would return.

Some wouldn't.

Obito clenched his fist.

"I won't let history repeat itself."

For his teammates.

For his friends.

For everyone in the village.

He would become strong enough to protect them all.

Even if fate itself stood in his way.

The peaceful days of Konoha continued.

But beyond the borders of the Land of Fire…

The winds of war were beginning to stir.
