Naruto: The Second Chance of Obito Uchiha

Chapter 5: A Rival Worth Respecting

A month had passed since Team Minato's first C-rank mission.

The team had begun earning a reputation throughout Konoha as dependable young shinobi.

Kakashi's talent.

Rin's kindness.

Obito's determination.

Together, Team Minato had become one of the Hidden Leaf's most promising new genin squads.

Yet there was one thing that hadn't changed.

Obito and Kakashi still challenged each other whenever they had the chance.

Training Ground Three echoed with the clash of kunai.

"Too slow!"

Kakashi ducked beneath Obito's punch before sweeping at his legs.

Obito leaped backward with a grin.

"You'll have to do better than that!"

Rin sighed from the sidelines.

"They're at it again."

Minato smiled.

"Competition isn't a bad thing."

"As long as they help each other improve."

The spar continued.

Kakashi's attacks were clean and precise.

Obito's movements were unpredictable.

Neither managed to gain the upper hand.

To everyone watching, it looked like two talented genin pushing each other to become stronger.

Only Obito knew the truth.

He was deliberately holding back.

His years of combat experience gave him an overwhelming advantage, but revealing too much would only raise questions.

He couldn't risk that.

Not yet.

The match ended with both boys holding kunai against each other's necks.

Minato clapped once.

"Excellent."

The two lowered their weapons.

Kakashi crossed his arms.

"I almost had you."

Obito laughed.

"Almost."

"I'll win next time."

"I'll be waiting."

Rin smiled.

"You two actually look like friends now."

Both boys immediately looked away.

"We're not friends."

They answered at the exact same time.

Rin burst into laughter.

Even Minato chuckled.

After a short break, Minato placed three leaves in front of his students.

"Today's lesson is chakra control."

He placed one leaf on his forehead.

"Keep it attached using only chakra."

Rin succeeded after only a few attempts.

Kakashi wasn't far behind.

Obito purposely let his leaf fall.

"Oh, come on…"

He scratched the back of his head with an embarrassed smile.

Kakashi sighed.

"You really are hopeless."

Obito laughed.

"Guess I still have a long way to go."

Minato quietly watched.

Something wasn't adding up.

During combat, Obito demonstrated remarkable control over his chakra.

Yet he struggled with one of the most basic exercises.

It almost looked…

Intentional.

Minato chose not to say anything.

Everyone had secrets.

If Obito wanted to tell him someday, he would listen.

Over the following weeks, Team Minato continued completing missions.

They escorted travelers.

Captured thieves.

Delivered important documents.

Helped nearby villages recover from storms.

Each mission strengthened the bond between the three teammates.

One afternoon, after returning from another successful assignment, Rin smiled as they walked through Konoha.

"It feels like we're finally becoming a real team."

Kakashi nodded.

"Our coordination has improved."

Obito looked at both of them.

It had improved because he refused to let history repeat itself.

In his previous life, Team Minato hadn't truly become a family until it was too late.

This time, he would make sure they trusted one another before the war separated them.

That evening, Obito returned to his secluded training ground.

He carefully checked the area before activating his Sharingan.

One tomoe.

Two.

Three.

The crimson eyes reflected the fading sunlight.

He practiced alone for hours.

His taijutsu.

His shurikenjutsu.

His chakra control.

He avoided techniques that consumed too much chakra.

His younger body simply wasn't ready.

Strength wasn't something he could recover overnight.

He would have to earn it again.

Just like everyone else.

As the sun disappeared below the horizon, Obito finally deactivated his Sharingan.

"I still have a long way to go."

Despite everything he remembered…

He was still only a twelve-year-old genin.

The next morning, Team Minato reported to the Hokage's office.

Hiruzen Sarutobi looked over several mission reports before speaking.

"You've all done excellent work."

The three genin stood proudly.

Minato smiled.

"They've exceeded my expectations."

Hiruzen nodded.

"Continue working hard."

Then his expression grew more serious.

"There have been increasing reports of conflict along the borders."

The room fell silent.

"The political situation between the great nations is becoming unstable."

Minato's smile faded.

"I understand."

Obito's heart sank.

He remembered these reports.

Small skirmishes.

Border disputes.

Missing patrols.

To most people, they were isolated incidents.

But Obito knew better.

He had already lived through what came next.

The Third Great Ninja War.

As Team Minato left the Hokage Tower, Rin noticed Obito staring toward the village gates.

"Obito?"

He blinked.

"Hm?"

"You've been awfully quiet."

Obito smiled reassuringly.

"I'm just thinking."

"About what?"

He looked toward the distant horizon.

Dark clouds were beginning to gather far beyond the walls of Konoha.

"About the future."

Rin smiled.

"Whatever happens…"

She extended her fist.

"We'll face it together."

Obito looked at her hand.

Then at Kakashi, who silently stood beside her.

A small smile appeared on his face.

He bumped his fist against hers.

"Yeah."

"Together."

As they walked home beneath the evening sky, Obito silently made another promise.

No matter what the future tried to take from him…

He would protect this team.

Even if he had to fight fate itself.

Far beyond the Land of Fire, the winds of war were beginning to stir.

For now, Konoha remained at peace.

But Obito knew…

That peace would not last forever.
