Dhum.
The heartbeat shook the earth.
Dhum.
A second pulse travelled through the stone beneath their feet.
Dhum.
The third was so powerful that the walls of the temple cracked.
Tez held Vaidehi's hand.
Across from them stood Vardhan.
Between them stood Arvind.
Tez's father.
For a moment, the three men looked at one another.
Father.
Son.
Teacher.
Enemy.
And beneath them, something ancient was waking.
Arvind looked at the floor.
"We have very little time."
Tez stepped forward.
"You said this thing existed before the Guardians."
"Yes."
"Then tell me everything."
Arvind looked into his son's eyes.
"Everything cannot be told in one night."
"Then tell me enough."
Arvind nodded.
"That is what your mother wanted."
He walked toward the centre of the chamber.
The stone floor suddenly began to glow.
A huge circle appeared beneath their feet.
Inside it was the symbol of the Heart.
But unlike the symbol they had seen before, this one was divided into two halves.
One half was white.
The other was black.
Tez stared at it.
"What is that?"
"The Heart has two faces."
Maitreyi whispered,
"Knowledge and memory."
Arvind shook his head.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"Life and forgetting."
The words seemed to make the chamber colder.
---
Arvind raised his hand.
The stone circle opened.
Not downward.
Upward.
A column of pale light rose from the ground and filled the chamber.
Within the light appeared images.
First came mountains.
Then forests.
Then rivers.
Then cities.
But they were not the cities of the present.
They were ancient.
Older than Kaalvan.
Older than Girivana.
Older than Jalapuri.
There were no great kingdoms.
No palaces.
No armies.
Only small settlements around forests and rivers.
People lived simply.
They prayed to the sun.
They gathered beside sacred trees.
They studied the stars.
And then the image changed.
The sky became dark.
People began forgetting.
A man forgot his wife's name.
A mother forgot her child.
A king forgot his own kingdom.
A sage forgot the knowledge he had spent his entire life learning.
Tez watched in horror.
"What happened to them?"
Arvind answered,
"The First Shadow came."
The image showed a dark shape moving through the people.
It had no clear body.
No face.
It was like smoke.
Like darkness given life.
Wherever it passed, memories disappeared.
But something else happened.
People began becoming angry.
Afraid.
Hungry for power.
They fought one another.
They turned against their own families.
The world slowly fell into chaos.
Tez whispered,
"It feeds on memories."
"Yes."
"Then why would it want them?"
"Because memory gives a person an identity."
Arvind looked at him.
"When memory disappears, a person becomes easier to control."
Tez understood.
"It doesn't just make people forget."
"No."
"It changes them."
"Yes."
---
The vision changed again.
A group of ancient sages stood around a glowing stone.
The Heart.
They were not Guardians yet.
They were simply people trying to stop something they did not understand.
Arvind continued.
"They discovered that the First Shadow could not be destroyed."
"Why?"
"Because it was not a creature in the usual sense."
He paused.
"It was born from something that exists inside every living mind."
Tez frowned.
"Fear?"
"Partly."
"Desire?"
"Yes."
"Pain?"
"Yes."
Arvind looked toward the dark half of the symbol.
"And the wish to escape death."
Vardhan suddenly spoke.
"So now you finally tell him."
Everyone turned.
Vardhan's face was calm.
But his eyes were fixed on the vision.
"You always blamed me for seeking immortality."
Arvind looked at him.
"I blamed you for believing death could be defeated by sacrificing others."
Vardhan's jaw tightened.
"You don't understand what I lost."
"I understand exactly what you lost."
"No."
Vardhan's voice became bitter.
"You never lost someone the way I did."
Arvind looked at him for a long moment.
"Your brother."
Vardhan became completely still.
Tez looked at him.
His brother.
The same loss that had once driven Vardhan toward forbidden knowledge.
Arvind continued.
"You thought the Heart could bring him back."
"I knew it could."
"No."
Arvind shook his head.
"It could preserve his memory."
Vardhan stepped forward.
"And what is a person without the memory of who they were?"
Arvind answered quietly,
"Still not the person you lost."
Vardhan's eyes burned with anger.
"You never understood."
"I understood enough to know that grief cannot be defeated by pretending death never happened."
Silence followed.
Tez finally understood something.
Vardhan's greatest enemy had never been the Guardians.
It had been his own grief.
---
Another tremor shook the temple.
The vision disappeared.
A deep crack opened in the stone floor.
Black mist rose from it.
Vaidehi stepped backward.
"What is that?"
Arvind immediately moved in front of them.
"Do not touch it."
Tez looked at the mist.
It moved like a living thing.
It twisted through the air.
Then it stopped.
A voice came from within it.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Almost gentle.
"Tez."
His blood turned cold.
Vaidehi squeezed his hand.
The voice spoke again.
"Vaidehi."
The pendant around Vaidehi's neck flashed.
She gasped.
"It knows us."
Arvind's face became tense.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because it has been waiting for you."
---
The black mist moved toward them.
Arvind drew an ancient blade from beneath his robe.
Its metal was dull, but strange symbols covered its surface.
Vardhan laughed quietly.
"You still carry that?"
Arvind did not look at him.
"Yes."
"You know it cannot hurt the Shadow."
"I know."
"Then why hold it?"
"To remind myself that some battles must still be fought."
The mist suddenly rushed forward.
Arvind struck.
The blade passed through it.
The mist split apart.
For a moment, Tez thought it had been defeated.
Then the darkness came together again.
It moved around Arvind.
His body froze.
"Father!"
Tez rushed forward.
Arvind shouted,
"Stay back!"
The mist whispered inside the chamber.
"You cannot protect them forever."
Arvind's face twisted with pain.
"Not forever."
He forced himself to stand.
"Only long enough."
The Guardian Seal in Tez's hand suddenly burned.
He raised it.
White light burst from his palm.
The black mist recoiled.
Vaidehi's pendant answered.
White-blue light joined Tez's.
The two lights became one.
The darkness disappeared.
For several seconds, there was complete silence.
Tez stared at his hand.
"What just happened?"
Arvind looked at him.
"That is why the Heart chose you."
Tez shook his head.
"Why?"
"Because the Shadow cannot control someone who can accept both memory and loss."
Tez looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Arvind smiled sadly.
"You lost everything."
He paused.
"But you did not allow your loss to turn you into something cruel."
Tez looked at Vardhan.
Vardhan's expression became hard.
Arvind continued.
"That is the difference."
---
Suddenly Vaidehi cried out.
Her pendant had become painfully bright.
She fell to her knees.
"Vaidehi!"
Tez caught her.
She closed her eyes.
A memory entered her mind.
She saw her mother.
Standing beside a river.
Holding the same pendant.
A young Tez was standing nearby.
Vaidehi was holding his hand.
Her mother was speaking.
"Listen carefully."
Young Vaidehi looked up.
"Mother?"
"You may forget him."
"Who?"
"The boy beside you."
Vaidehi shook her head.
"I don't want to."
Her mother knelt before her.
"Sometimes forgetting is the only way to protect love."
The memory changed.
Her mother placed a hand on Tez's forehead.
Then on Vaidehi's.
A soft light surrounded them.
"You will meet again," she whispered.
"How will we know each other?"
Her mother smiled through tears.
"You won't."
"Then how?"
"The Heart will remember."
The vision disappeared.
Vaidehi opened her eyes.
Tears ran down her cheeks.
Tez knelt beside her.
"What did you see?"
"My mother."
"What did she say?"
Vaidehi looked at him.
"She knew."
"Knew what?"
"That one day we would meet again."
Tez's eyes filled with emotion.
"Then this was never an accident."
"No."
Vaidehi slowly shook her head.
"We were separated."
"But not lost."
She looked at their joined hands.
"The Heart brought us back."
---
Maitreyi suddenly noticed something on the floor.
"Wait."
She pointed toward the complete Seal.
A new symbol was forming beneath it.
Seven circles.
Six were empty.
One was glowing.
Tez looked at them.
"What does that mean?"
Arvind answered,
"The seven cities were never the final guardians."
Maitreyi looked shocked.
"Then what were they?"
"Locks."
The word echoed.
"Locks for what?"
Arvind looked toward the black crack.
"Each city holds a part of the ancient prison."
Tez stared at him.
"Then by opening the cities…"
"We have weakened the prison."
Everyone became silent.
Bhaskar whispered,
"So we made it worse."
Arvind nodded.
"Perhaps."
Tez's face hardened.
"Why didn't you stop us?"
"Because the cities were already awakening."
"And the Seals?"
"They were always meant to return to you."
Tez looked at Vaidehi.
"Then we were supposed to do this."
"Yes."
"But why?"
Arvind's eyes became distant.
"Because the prison was never meant to remain closed forever."
Tez frowned.
"Then what was the plan?"
Arvind did not answer.
Vardhan stepped forward.
"I know."
Everyone looked at him.
Vardhan stared at Tez and Vaidehi.
"The prison is not supposed to remain closed."
He pointed toward the two Seals.
"It is supposed to be opened."
Arvind's face changed.
"No."
Vardhan smiled.
"That is what the Guardians feared."
Tez asked,
"What happens if we open it?"
Vardhan looked at him.
"We find out what the Heart was really created to protect."
---
Another enormous tremor shook Kaalvan.
The walls cracked.
Far above them, the black star appeared through the stone ceiling.
Its dark light entered the chamber.
The Heart symbol turned black.
Arvind looked terrified.
"The Star."
Maitreyi whispered,
"It has reached Kaalvan."
Arvind nodded.
"It is no longer watching."
"What is it doing?"
"Calling."
"Calling whom?"
Arvind looked at Tez and Vaidehi.
"You."
---
The two Seals suddenly lifted from their hands.
They floated in the air.
White light surrounded them.
Then a second light appeared.
Black.
The two forces moved toward each other.
Tez reached out.
"Stop!"
But it was too late.
The Seals touched.
A massive wave of energy exploded through Kaalvan.
Every forgotten door in the city opened.
Thousands of voices cried out.
Names filled the streets.
Memories rushed through the city like a storm.
Then, from beneath the temple, something answered.
A huge eye opened in the darkness.
Not a human eye.
Not an animal eye.
An eye made of black light.
It looked directly at Tez.
And Tez suddenly remembered something he had never remembered before.
A room.
A baby.
His mother crying.
His father standing beside her.
Vaidehi's mother holding the second Seal.
And behind them…
A shadow.
His mother was saying:
"Arvind, if he remembers what happened that night, the Shadow will remember him too."
His father answered:
"Then erase everything."
Tez's breath stopped.
The memory changed.
His mother looked directly at him.
Not the baby.
At the older Tez watching the memory.
Her lips moved.
"I am sorry."
Then the memory ended.
Tez fell to his knees.
Vaidehi held him.
"What happened?"
He looked at her.
"They didn't erase my memories because of Vardhan."
Vaidehi stared at him.
"Then why?"
Tez looked toward the black eye beneath the city.
"They erased them because…"
His voice trembled.
"…I had already seen the First Shadow."
Everyone became silent.
Arvind closed his eyes.
He knew the secret had finally returned.
Vardhan stared at Tez with a mixture of shock and fear.
"What did you see?"
Tez slowly stood.
"A face."
"Whose?"
Tez looked at the darkness.
"I don't know."
The black eye widened.
A voice filled the chamber.
Not loud.
Not human.
Not angry.
It sounded almost like a whisper spoken by the earth itself.
"You knew me before you knew your own name."
Tez's heart stopped.
The voice continued.
"And you promised to return."
Vaidehi's pendant shattered.
Arvind shouted,
"NO!"
A black mark appeared on Tez's palm.
The same mark appeared on Vaidehi's hand.
The two marks joined.
The black star above Kaalvan split open.
A column of darkness descended toward the temple.
Arvind pulled Tez and Vaidehi backward.
"Run!"
Tez looked at him.
"Where?"
Arvind pointed toward a narrow passage opening behind the Heart symbol.
"Anywhere."
"From what?"
Arvind looked into the darkness.
His voice became barely audible.
"From the thing that was here before the Guardians."
The chamber shook violently.
Vardhan stepped backward.
For the first time in centuries, the ancient man looked truly afraid.
Then the voice came again.
"The Guardians forgot me."
The black eye closed.
"But the Heart did not."
The temple exploded into darkness.
And somewhere beneath Kaalvan, the First Shadow took its first breath.
