Chapter 60 - The Man Behind The Door (Part - I)

The door slammed shut.

The sound travelled through the entire chamber like thunder.

Tez stood frozen.

His eyes were fixed on the man standing before him.

The man who had spoken his name.

The man whose face had appeared in countless broken memories.

The man Tez had spent years believing was gone forever.

His father.

For several heartbeats, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the strange wind that had filled the chamber seemed to disappear.

Tez's lips trembled.

"Father…"

The man looked at him.

His face had changed with time.

There were lines around his eyes. His hair had turned partly grey. A thin scar crossed his left cheek.

But Tez knew those eyes.

He had seen them in the few memories that had survived inside him.

Eyes that had once watched him sleep.

Eyes that had once carried him on strong shoulders.

Eyes that had disappeared from his life before Tez was old enough to understand why.

The man took one slow step forward.

"Tez."

That single word broke something inside him.

Tez moved forward.

Then stopped.

His heart wanted to run toward his father.

His mind refused to believe him.

"You are dead."

The man lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"You died."

"I know what you were told."

Tez's voice became louder.

"My mother told me you were gone."

The man closed his eyes.

"She had to."

Tez stared at him.

"Had to?"

His hands began to shake.

"Do you know what it was like?"

The man said nothing.

"Do you know what it was like to grow up thinking that both my parents were gone?"

His voice cracked.

"To wonder whether you had abandoned us?"

The man's face showed pain.

"I never abandoned you."

Tez laughed bitterly.

"You disappeared."

"Yes."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"Yes."

"Why?"

The man looked directly into his eyes.

"Because if you had known I was alive, Vardhan would have found you much earlier."

Tez went silent.

Behind him, Vaidehi moved closer.

Devadatta lowered his head.

He already knew this conversation would come.

Tez slowly turned toward him.

"You knew."

Devadatta did not deny it.

"Yes."

Tez looked from Devadatta to his father.

"You both knew."

His father nodded.

"We all knew."

Tez's eyes filled with anger.

"You all decided what I should know about my own life."

His father stepped closer.

"We were trying to give you a life."

"No."

Tez shook his head.

"You gave me a lie."

The words struck the man harder than any weapon could have.

He looked away.

For a moment, he seemed less like an ancient Guardian and more like a tired father who had carried a terrible secret for too many years.

"I deserved that," he whispered.

---

Vaidehi touched Tez's arm.

"Tez…"

He did not look at her.

His eyes remained on his father.

"What is your name?"

The man looked surprised.

"You know my name."

"I knew a name."

Tez's voice was cold.

"I want the truth."

The man stood straight.

"My name is Arvind."

Tez repeated it quietly.

"Arvind."

The name awakened something.

A small room.

A clay lamp.

Rain outside.

A young man holding a baby.

A woman smiling.

A child's tiny hand wrapped around his finger.

Then the memory vanished.

Tez pressed his fingers against his forehead.

"My head…"

Vaidehi held his shoulder.

"What did you see?"

"My father."

Arvind looked at him.

"You remember?"

"Only pieces."

"That is enough."

"No."

Tez looked up.

"It isn't."

---

Maitreyi slowly approached Arvind.

"Where have you been all these years?"

Arvind looked at her.

"Here."

Maitreyi's face changed.

"In Kaalvan?"

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"No."

She looked around the enormous chamber.

"Then who else is here?"

Arvind did not answer immediately.

He turned toward the sealed door behind them.

"Not everyone who enters Kaalvan leaves."

A chill passed through the group.

Aarav tightened his grip on his weapon.

Bhaskar looked into the darkness.

"You mean there are people here?"

Arvind shook his head.

"Not people."

Tez's eyes narrowed.

"What is behind that door?"

Arvind looked at him.

"Something your mother spent her life trying to keep asleep."

The chamber became silent again.

Tez remembered his mother's voice.

The greatest danger is not Vardhan.

Then the next words.

There is someone older.

Tez's stomach tightened.

"You know about it."

"Yes."

"What is it?"

Arvind looked toward the ceiling.

"The thing beneath Kaalvan has many names."

"What name do you call it?"

Arvind's expression became dark.

"I call it the First Shadow."

---

The words seemed to change the air.

Maitreyi stepped backward.

"The First Shadow…"

"You have heard the name?"

"My teacher mentioned it once."

"What did he say?"

Maitreyi swallowed.

"He said there was something that existed before the Guardians."

Arvind nodded.

"That is true."

Tez looked at him.

"Before the Guardians?"

"Before the first Guardian."

"Then what is it?"

Arvind's eyes moved toward the Heart symbol carved into the wall.

"The Guardians were created to protect the Heart."

He paused.

"But the Heart was not created by the Guardians."

Tez frowned.

"Then who created it?"

Arvind gave a faint smile.

"That is the question your mother spent years trying to answer."

Tez felt a strange fear growing inside him.

"And did she find the answer?"

"Yes."

"What was it?"

"She discovered that the Heart was not simply a source of knowledge."

Arvind's voice became quieter.

"It was a prison."

---

Nobody moved.

Tez stared at him.

"A prison?"

Arvind nodded.

"Long before the seven Guardian cities were built, there was a force that could enter human minds, consume memories, and bend people's desires."

Vaidehi whispered,

"The First Shadow."

"Yes."

"It was sealed?"

"Yes."

"By whom?"

Arvind looked at Tez.

"By the Heart."

Tez looked toward the symbol.

"If the Heart is a prison, why did the Guardians protect it?"

"Because the prison was also a source of knowledge."

Maitreyi understood.

"The knowledge of the thing inside it."

Arvind nodded.

"Every generation of Guardians was told the same story."

He paused.

"Protect the Heart."

"But they were never told the whole truth."

Tez's face hardened.

"Why?"

"Because some knowledge is dangerous even when it is true."

---

A sudden sound came from somewhere below them.

Grrrrrummm...

The ground trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Vaidehi grabbed Tez's hand.

"What was that?"

Arvind looked toward the floor.

His face became pale.

"It has begun."

Tez looked at him.

"What?"

"The awakening."

Another tremor.

This time stronger.

The stone beneath their feet moved.

A black line appeared across the floor.

Then another.

Aarav stepped back.

"We should leave."

Arvind shook his head.

"We cannot."

"Why?"

"Because the city has already closed."

Everyone looked around.

The walls were changing.

The doors that had stood open throughout Kaalvan were closing one after another.

Bang.

Bang.

Bang.

The sound echoed through the city.

Maitreyi whispered,

"Kaalvan is sealing itself."

Arvind nodded.

"It knows they have returned."

"Who?"

Arvind looked at Tez and Vaidehi.

"You two."

---

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

Her pendant was glowing again.

His Guardian Seal was glowing too.

Their light slowly joined.

A symbol appeared between them.

The complete Seal.

Arvind stared at it.

For the first time, tears appeared in his eyes.

"You really found each other."

Tez frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Arvind looked at Vaidehi.

"Your mother was right."

Vaidehi stepped forward.

"What did my mother know?"

Arvind's voice became soft.

"She knew that one day you would find Tez."

Vaidehi's eyes widened.

"Why?"

"Because she knew the Heart had chosen you."

Tez looked at him.

"Why us?"

Arvind did not answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward an old stone wall.

He placed his hand against it.

A hidden door opened.

Inside was a small chamber.

At its centre stood a stone table.

On it lay a bundle wrapped in faded cloth.

Arvind carefully picked it up.

He brought it to Tez.

"This belongs to you."

Tez stared at the bundle.

"What is it?"

"Something your mother left behind."

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a small wooden toy.

A carved horse.

Tez stared at it.

Something broke open inside his mind.

A little boy running.

His father sitting beneath a tree.

His mother laughing.

A little girl standing nearby.

Vaidehi.

The four of them.

Together.

Happy.

Alive.

Tez touched the wooden horse.

"I remember…"

His voice was barely audible.

Arvind smiled through his tears.

"You used to carry it everywhere."

Tez looked at him.

"Why don't I remember this?"

"Because we removed those memories."

Tez's eyes hardened.

"You did this."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Arvind looked toward Vaidehi.

"Because your childhood friendship was the one thing Vardhan could use against both of you."

Vaidehi's face became pale.

"What did he want?"

Arvind answered,

"To find the two chosen children before the Heart awakened."

Tez understood.

"And my mother?"

"She knew what would happen if he found you."

"And she chose to erase us."

"She chose to save you."

---

Tez's anger slowly faded.

It did not disappear.

But beneath it was something else.

Pain.

The pain of understanding.

He looked down at the wooden horse.

His father had kept it.

All these years.

He had carried a piece of Tez's childhood into the darkness.

Tez looked at him.

"Why didn't you come back?"

Arvind's eyes filled with tears.

"I tried."

"When?"

"Many times."

"Then why?"

"Because every time I came close, the Black Eclipse followed."

He paused.

"Your mother made me promise."

"What promise?"

"That I would stay away until the Heart called you."

Tez's voice became quiet.

"And now?"

Arvind looked at the glowing Seal.

"Now it has."

---

A deep roar came from beneath Kaalvan.

This time, the entire city shook.

Stone towers cracked.

Ancient lamps burst.

The walls began bleeding black dust.

Vaidehi looked frightened.

"Arvind…"

He turned toward her.

"You must leave."

Tez immediately shook his head.

"No."

"You don't understand."

"I am not leaving you again."

Arvind stared at him.

Those words struck deep.

Tez stepped closer.

"You disappeared once."

His voice was steady now.

"I won't let you disappear again."

Arvind looked at his son for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

A real smile.

The first one Tez had seen from him.

"I always wondered what kind of man you would become."

Tez looked at him.

"What did you think?"

"I thought you would become a warrior."

He shook his head.

"But you became something better."

"What?"

"A man who still cares after losing everything."

Tez's eyes filled with tears.

Arvind placed his hand on Tez's shoulder.

"I am proud of you."

For years, Tez had imagined hearing those words.

He had imagined them in dreams.

But hearing them now hurt more than he expected.

He looked away so nobody would see his tears.

Vaidehi quietly placed her hand in his.

---

Then a voice came from outside.

Cold.

Calm.

Familiar.

"You should have told him sooner."

Everyone turned.

Vardhan stood at the far end of the chamber.

His face was filled with anger.

But beneath that anger was something else.

Fear.

Arvind looked at him.

"Vardhan."

The two men stared at each other.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Tez looked between them.

There was history in their silence.

A history much older than his own.

Vardhan finally spoke.

"You lied to him for years."

Arvind answered,

"So did you."

Vardhan's eyes moved to Tez.

"I never lied about what I wanted."

"No," Arvind said.

"You only lied about why."

Vardhan's expression darkened.

Tez stepped forward.

"What is he talking about?"

Vardhan looked at him.

"You still don't understand, Tez."

"Then explain."

Vardhan glanced toward the floor.

"The thing beneath this city…"

He paused.

"It is not the enemy your father believes it is."

Arvind's eyes hardened.

"Enough."

Vardhan smiled sadly.

"No, Arvind."

Then the earth shook again.

A deep crack opened beneath the temple.

From somewhere below came a sound like a thousand people whispering at once.

Vardhan looked toward the darkness.

"It is awake."

Tez looked at his father.

Arvind's face had gone completely pale.

Vardhan whispered,

"And this time…"

His eyes turned toward Tez and Vaidehi.

"…it has remembered their names."

The lights of Kaalvan went out.

And from beneath the city came a single, ancient heartbeat.

Dhum.

Dhum.

Dhum.

Tez held Vaidehi's hand tighter.

His father stood beside him.

Vardhan stood across from them.

And somewhere deep beneath Kaalvan, something that had been sleeping since before the age of the Guardians opened its eyes.
