That evening, Euphoria steamed a small portion of the rice in a stone bowl. To her delight, it turned out perfectly fluffy. The combined aroma of the fresh rice and the savory vegetables Wayne had prepared made for the most satisfying meal she'd had since arriving in this world.
Wayne, however, watched the dwindling supply in the animal-skin bag with a flicker of concern. Even with careful rationing, it wouldn't last her very long—and seeing how much joy it brought her, he hated the thought of her running out.
"Maybe I should save some of the grains and try to plant them next year?" he suggested.
Euphoria paused, looked at his earnest expression, and burst into laughter, clutching her full stomach. "Wayne, this rice won't grow into seedlings. It's been processed; it's no longer a seed," she explained gently as his face fell into a look of confusion.
"Oh," Wayne murmured, his disappointment evident.
