Son of a bi—
I pulled up to the property and spotted Elise right away, standing near the tree line with her arms crossed. I killed the engine, got out, and started walking toward her.
The annoyance I had been carrying since her phone call still sat hot in my chest, but the second I got close enough to see the stubborn set of her shoulders, it all slowly went away.
"You really couldn't wait one more day, could you?" I said as I reached her. "I told you to stay off this land until we knew more. Morning, afternoon, midnight—I don't give a shit what time it is. But you still came out here alone."
Elise turned to face me, chin up. "We've already argued about this. You told me not to come at night. And I already told you…this is morning. The sun is up, the birds are singing…"
I stopped a few feet away and rubbed the back of my neck, trying to keep my voice steady even though part of me wanted to laugh at how she was making me feel like an idiot.
