Chapter 37 - CHAPTER 36: CROSSING THE LINE

🖤

Veronica didn't leave after that. Not immediately. Not politely. Not quietly. She stayed. Like she had every right to.

And that alone changed the atmosphere of the entire floor.

Cassy tried to focus. She really did. But every few minutes, her attention drifted back to Caleb's office. To the closed door. To the silence behind it.

"Don't think about it," Adrian said quietly as he passed her desk.

Cassy blinked. "I'm not."

Adrian gave her a look. "…You're a terrible liar."

Cassy didn't respond because she didn't have an argument for that.

Inside the office, the silence wasn't calm anymore. It was tight. Pressured.

"You're not leaving," Caleb said again.

Veronica stood near the window now. Like she belonged in his space. Like she always had. "No," she replied simply. A pause. "Because I'm not finished."

Caleb's jaw tightened slightly. "This isn't a conversation."

Veronica turned back to him. "No," she said softly. "It's an intervention."

Silence.

Outside, Cassy felt it before she understood it. That shift again. That tension that wasn't just emotional anymore. It was confrontation.

Inside, Veronica stepped closer to his desk. "You're not yourself," she said.

Caleb didn't move. "I am."

"You're not," she insisted. A pause. "Because you never used to hesitate."

Silence.

Cassy's fingers tightened slightly on her tablet because that word hesitate. It followed him everywhere now.

Inside, Caleb's voice lowered. "You've said enough."

Veronica shook her head. "No," she said. "I haven't." Then she glanced toward the door again. Toward Cassy. "And neither has she."

That made Caleb's expression shift instantly. Sharper. Colder. "Veronica," he warned.

But she didn't stop. "She's changing you," Veronica said quietly. A pause. "And you're letting her."

Silence.

Cassy didn't realize she had stood up until she was already moving. One step. Then another. Closer to the door. Not entering. Just… there. Listening.

Inside, Caleb finally spoke. "That's not your place."

Veronica smiled faintly. "I used to think it was." A pause. "Maybe that's the problem."

Silence. Heavy. Final. Veronica walked toward the door.

Cassy froze. The door opened. And Veronica stepped out. Not surprised to see her. Not startled. Just calm. For a moment, they stood face to face.

Veronica looked at her carefully. Up close now. Not from behind glass. Not from distance. "So this is you," Veronica said softly.

Cassy didn't move. "…And you are?"

Veronica smiled. "I already told you." A pause. "The problem." That word hung in the air. Sharp. Intentional.

Cassy didn't flinch. But she didn't respond either.

Behind them, Caleb appeared at the doorway. "Enough," he said firmly.

Veronica didn't look away from Cassy. Not immediately. Then finally, She did. "I'll leave," Veronia said.

Caleb didn't relax. Not even slightly.

But Veronica added one more thing. Soft. Controlled. Dangerous. "This isn't over." And then she walked away.

Silence swallowed the hallway. Cassy stood still. Caleb didn't move. Neither of them spoke because something had just shifted again. Not between them but around them.

And now, it wasn't just feelings anymore. It was stakes.
