Chapter 36 - CHAPTER 35: WHEN PATIENCE BREAKS

🖤

Veronica didn't come back quietly. That was the first mistake everyone made. Thinking she would wait. Thinking she would observe. Thinking she would respect the space because Veronica never waited for anything she wanted.

"Mr. Garcia is in a meeting," Adrian said firmly.

Veronica smiled politely. "I'll wait."

Cassy watched from her desk. That same smile. Controlled. Patient. But underneath it, pressure.

"She's not leaving," Adrian muttered under his breath as he walked past Cassy.

Cassy didn't respond. Because she could already feel it too. Something building. Something inevitable.

The elevator chimed again. And this time, Veronica walked straight toward Caleb's office. No hesitation. No stopping.

"Miss—!" Adrian started.

But she didn't even look back.

Cassy stood up slightly. But didn't follow. Not yet.

Inside the office, Caleb was reviewing documents when the door opened without a knock. His expression hardened instantly. "…I didn't call you in."

Veronica closed the door behind her. "I know." A pause. "I stopped waiting," she said calmly.

Caleb set the file down slowly. "Then start again outside my office." Cold. Controlled. Final.

But Veronica didn't flinch. Instead, she stepped closer. "Is it her?" she asked.

Silence. That question. That name. That timing.

Caleb's gaze sharpened. "That's not your concern."

Veronica nodded slightly. "That's a yes."

Outside, Cassy froze when she heard her name through the glass walls. Just faintly. But enough.

Veronica continued. "You never used to be distracted," she said softly. "And now you are."

Caleb didn't answer. Because she wasn't wrong.

Veronica tilted her head. "Is she the reason you stopped looking at me the way you used to?"

Silence. Long. Heavy. That silence said more than any answer could have.

Cassy's chest tightened. She didn't mean to listen. But she couldn't move.

Inside, Caleb finally spoke. "Leave this building, Veronica." Not angry. Not loud. Just final.

But Veronica smiled faintly. "No." That single word changed the air instantly.

Caleb's eyes narrowed. "Veronica."

"I said no," she repeated calmly. A pause. "Not until I understand what she is to you."

Silence.

Cassy's breath caught. Because now, it wasn't just observation anymore. It was confrontation.

Inside, Caleb stepped forward slightly. "That's enough."

Veronica didn't move. "You used to tell me everything." A pause. "What changed?"

Silence.

Caleb didn't answer immediately. Because the truth was standing outside that door.

Cassy.

And for the first time, he didn't know how to separate the past from the present.

Finally, "Everything changes," he said quietly.

Veronica studied him. Then nodded slowly. "…Because of her." Not a question. A statement.

Silence. And that silence was the answer.

Outside, Cassy stepped back slightly. Like the air had shifted too sharply. Like something had landed too close.

Inside, Veronica exhaled softly. "So it is her."

Caleb didn't deny it.

And that was the moment everything broke because Veronica didn't shout. She didn't cry. She didn't leave. She just smiled. Slow. Certain. Dangerous. "Then I'm not done here," she said quietly.

And for the first time, even Caleb looked uncertain because this wasn't just the past anymore. It was the past refusing to stay gone.

And it had just found a reason to fight back.
