"According to our current statistics, they've committed over a thousand crimes. The more remote the area, the higher the number of victims."
Fujita pulled out a map of Japan covered in lines. Every single line ended in Tokyo. "We suspect there's a tightly organized group behind them. These are their movement patterns. If we're right, their main base is somewhere in Tokyo."
Clearly the police weren't useless.
The accuracy of the intel they had matched Ivan's memories perfectly.
"Why are you telling me all this? I don't think I need to know any of it," Ivan said, staring straight into Fujita's eyes with a completely calm tone.
"Because you're not a normal human."
Fujita answered without hesitation, then quickly added, "Don't misunderstand. I'm not saying you're a parasite. Your strength is exceptional. The police need someone like you. We want to work with you."
"Work with you? What do I get out of it?" Ivan's question was blunt as hell, but it was exactly what he was thinking.
If it wasn't for his curiosity about Gotou, he would've gone back to the Boys world a long time ago.
He really wanted to know if Gotou possessed some unique talent the other parasites didn't have.
Fujita frowned hard, the crease between his brows showing he was thinking it over. He tapped the table a few times with a marker pen. After more than ten seconds, he finally spoke.
"Do you need money? A house? Something else? As long as it's within my authority, I can arrange it."
He really didn't want to let go of the only person who had killed two parasites so far. It meant Ivan clearly knew some of their weaknesses.
Looking at Sergeant Fujita, a pretty good idea suddenly popped into Ivan's head.
Use the police to put pressure on Gotou and force that bastard out.
"I can cooperate with you. But I want full access to all your intelligence. Also, sometimes I'll need you to follow my lead on operations. Other than that, I don't want anything."
"Impossible. I can't agree to letting you command police forces," Fujita rejected it flat out.
"Looks like you didn't understand me," Ivan said. "I'll tell you the objective of the operation. Whether you listen to me or not is completely up to the police."
He suddenly plucked a single hair from his own head and placed it on the table.
"Just pull out any hair from a parasite's head and you can tell if someone is one of them. If the hair shrinks or twitches, that person is a parasite."
"Exactly how it works, I'm sure your forensics team will figure out soon enough. This detection method is my show of good faith."
"Understood. I'll report this to headquarters immediately. Once we confirm the method is real and effective, I can agree to all your conditions," Fujita said, barely able to hide the excitement in his voice.
When Ivan left the station, Fujita actually bowed and personally saw him out. The pressure from the parasite cases had been crushing him these past few days. He was really praying this detection trick would work.
...
Not long after leaving the police station, Ivan met up with Kana at a yakitori place that was popping in the social media.
By then the fusion progress on his panel had finally completed.
"Still not giving up on Shinichi?" Ivan asked, taking a small sip from his cup of sake while using Analyze on Kana.
Kana stayed silent. Clearly she had no intention of giving up.
"From what I know about Shinichi, he's never going to dump Satomi Murano for you."
Ivan's words were blunt and cut deep.
"Of course, you'd better not try to sabotage their relationship with some dirty tricks. That'll only make Shinichi hate you. Why not just stay friends? It's simpler that way."
While he spoke, the analysis on Kana finished.
[Talent Skill: Wave Perception]
[Fusion Condition: Trigger intense emotional fluctuation in Kana]
[After fusion, the player's ability to perceive abnormal electromagnetic waves (including those from parasites) will be greatly enhanced. However, emotions within the waves cannot be read. This ability is one-way. Effective range will grow as the player grows. Current range: 100 meters.]
Kana's talent was way better than Ivan had expected.
He originally thought she could only sense the presence of parasites. He never imagined she could pick up other abnormal waves too.
For someone like Ivan who could travel between worlds, this talent was fucking perfect.
"You don't get it. You have no idea how I feel," Kana said coldly, her voice growing more agitated. "Do you know what it feels like to have that instant connection? I felt it the very first time I saw Shinichi."
"That's only because you can sense certain abnormal beings. Like Shinichi and the guy who tried to grab you earlier."
Kana couldn't accept what Ivan was saying at all. She stood up abruptly, not even trying to be polite anymore. "If you came here today just to convince me to stay away from Shinichi, then we have nothing left to talk about. Sorry, but I'm leaving."
She turned and walked straight out of the restaurant.
"If you don't believe me, just ride your bike around Tokyo for a while. The facts will prove I'm right about everything."
Ivan watched her leave without looking back and shook his head.
His goal was already achieved.
[Wave Perception talent fusion in progress. Current progress: 10%. (Cannot perform next analysis until full fusion is complete.)]
After that, he sat alone and patiently worked through the food on the table.
It was his first time trying something in a food place that was trending on social media. He had to admit, this restaurant really seemed to love serving half-raw shit.
Some pieces were so bloody and fishy that Ivan had to force them down. He eventually waved the waiter over and told him to grill everything again.
The Sake had a weird taste too, like someone mixed rice wine with cheap liquor.
It wasn't undrinkable, but it definitely wasn't to Ivan's liking.
And yet again, social media let me down...
When he left the yakitori place, he got a text from school. West High was shut down again.
Those higher-ups at West High must have some serious connections. No matter how many times the school got turned into a slaughterhouse, it always reopened after a while. It was honestly ridiculous.
Ivan finished complaining about West High and started walking home.
Some guy shoving flyers suddenly forced one into his hand. Before Ivan could even tell him to fuck off, the man had already turned and shoved another flyer at the next random pedestrian.
At first Ivan thought it was just some stupid advertisement.
He was about to toss it when he caught the big headline: Mayoral Election.
If he remembered correctly, the guy running for mayor was the actual leader of the parasite organization.
He unfolded the flyer and sure enough, most of the content was all about the environment.
