Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Board is Set

The first thing I registered was the smell of damp stone and stale blood. The second was a splitting headache, as if someone had taken a sledgehammer to my skull and decided to scramble my gray matter for fun.

I opened my eyes, blinking away the blurriness to find myself staring at a cracked wooden ceiling. This wasn't my high-rise penthouse. And the dull, throbbing pain in my chest? That wasn't from the stress of orchestrating my latest corporate takeover.

Memories that weren't mine crashed into my mind like a tidal wave.

Kaiser Warborn. Sixteen years old. The last surviving heir of the disgraced Warborn House. Exiled to a desolate border town. Beaten half to death by local thugs hired by a rival noble family.

I let out a dry, raspy chuckle that ended in a cough. "Transmigration. How delightfully cliché."

In my past life, I was a man who played with people's lives and fortunes like chess pieces. I thrived on control, on manipulation, on pulling the strings from the shadows. I had died abruptly—a boring heart defect, of all things. No dramatic assassination, no thrilling climax. Just a sudden fade to black.

But this? This was a second chance.

I sat up, ignoring the screaming protest of my bruised ribs, and swung my legs over the edge of the cot. Across the dingy room hung a cracked, tarnished mirror. I limped toward it to inspect my new inventory.

Staring back at me was a face that could only be described as unfairly aesthetic. Pure, striking white hair fell in disheveled locks over eyes the color of cold, hardened steel. The jawline was sharp enough to cut glass, and despite the bruises marring the pale skin, the aristocratic elegance of the Warborn bloodline was undeniable.

I tilted my head, flashing a practiced, charming smile at my reflection. It was the kind of smile that promised the world while robbing you blind.

"Perfect," I whispered. "A face built for sin."

Suddenly, a translucent blue screen materialized in my field of vision, accompanied by a sharp, chiming noise.

[Ding!]

[Soul Integration Complete. Welcome, Host, to the world of Aethelgard.]

[Initializing: The Conqueror's System...]

A voice, feminine but dripping with a distinctly dry, sarcastic tone, echoed in my mind.

"A game?" I murmured, tracing a bruise on my cheekbone. "I excel at those. What are the rules?"

I paused. Elias Brightstar. Aethelgard. Magic academies, ancient bloodlines, a golden-boy protagonist...

A cold smirk played on my lips. I recognized the names. It was the plot of an overhyped fantasy RPG I had idly reviewed in my past life. Elias was the classic, nauseatingly righteous hero who stumbled his way into power and a massive harem through sheer 'power of friendship' and dumb luck.

[Warning: Failure to actively pursue Conquest Targets or death in this realm will result in immediate Soul Erasure.]

"Steal his women, break his spirit, and take over the world," I summarized, adjusting my ragged collar. "And if I fail, I cease to exist. A bit extreme, but it provides excellent motivation."

[System Status: Online]

[Host:] Kaiser Warborn

[Age:] 16

[Bloodline:] Dormant Warborn (Tier: Unranked)

[Combat Power:] E- (Pathetic)

[Charm/Manipulation Potential:] SSS (Anomalous)

[Conquest Points (CP):] 0

"Physical strength is just a tool," I replied, my mind already spinning webs, mapping out the immediate future. "True power lies in leverage, timing, and exploiting the right weaknesses. Show me the current board."

[Main Quest Issued: First Steps of a Conqueror]

[Objective:] Establish a foothold in the border town of Oakhaven. Identify and initiate contact with your first Conquest Target.

[Target Clue:] Look to the local garrison. A heart of ice waiting to be melted... or shattered.

[Reward:] 500 CP, Basic Pheromone Control (Passive), Awakening of Warborn Aura (Stage 1).

[Failure:] Severe soul damage.

A heart of ice in the garrison. That would be the strict knight instructor. A classic Kuudere. Cold, disciplined, fiercely loyal to her duty, and likely harboring some deep-seated trauma or insecurity beneath that impenetrable armor.

She was exactly the kind of puzzle I loved to take apart.

I turned away from the mirror, the pain in my body already fading into the background, overshadowed by the thrill of the hunt. I was at the bottom of the food chain, a forgotten noble in a scripted world, playing against a destined hero favored by fate itself.

It was the ultimate psychological game. And I never lose.

"System," I said, my voice smooth, shedding the weakness of the boy who had died in this bed just hours ago. "Let's go conquer a knight."
