Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Night Something Found Me

I think something has been watching me for days.

Not in the normal way people do, not with curious glances or passing attention, but with a presence that feels quieter, heavier—like it exists just beyond what I can see. At first, I told myself I was imagining it. A shadow lingering a second too long, a whisper that didn't belong to the wind, the strange sensation of someone standing behind me when I was completely alone.

Tonight, that feeling followed me home.

The street was unusually empty, wrapped in a silence that didn't feel peaceful but wrong, like the world itself was holding its breath. My footsteps echoed too loudly against the pavement, and I found myself clutching my bag tighter with each step. I tried to ignore it, tried to convince myself that it was just another late night, just another overactive imagination.

But then I heard it.

A soft dragging sound behind me.

Slow. Deliberate.

Following.

My heart began to pound so loudly it drowned out every other thought. I didn't turn around. I couldn't. Something deep inside me—something instinctive and terrified—warned me that if I did, I would see something I would never be able to forget.

The streetlight above me flickered once, twice, and then died, plunging everything into darkness.

And in that darkness, I felt it.

Closer now.

Right behind me.

A breath against my ear that wasn't mine.

"Found you…"

The whisper wasn't loud, but it didn't need to be. It crawled under my skin, freezing every nerve in my body.

I ran.

I didn't think, didn't look back, didn't even care where my feet were taking me. I just ran as fast as I could, my breaths coming out in sharp, uneven gasps. The sound of that thing—whatever it was—seemed to follow me, not rushing, not chasing, but simply… keeping up.

Like it knew I couldn't escape.

A faint glow appeared ahead of me, cutting through the darkness like a promise.

The café.

I pushed the door open so hard it slammed against the wall, the familiar chime of the bell ringing louder than usual. Warm light spilled over me instantly, wrapping around my trembling body like safety. The normal sounds of the café—the low hum of conversation, the clink of cups—felt unreal after the suffocating silence outside.

I stumbled inside, trying to catch my breath, trying to convince myself that I was safe now.

"Hey—are you okay?" Riya's voice came from behind the counter, laced with concern.

"I'm fine," I said quickly, forcing a weak smile. "Just ran a bit."

It was a lie, and not a convincing one, but I didn't have the energy to explain something I didn't understand myself.

I tried to calm down, to steady the rapid rhythm of my heart, but something still felt off.

The café was quieter than usual.

Not empty, but… still.

And then I noticed him.

He was sitting in the corner, partially hidden in shadow, as if the light didn't quite reach him the way it did everyone else. I don't know how I hadn't seen him the moment I walked in. Maybe it was because he hadn't moved. Maybe it was because he didn't need to.

He was just… there.

Watching me.

My breath caught in my throat.

There was something about him that I couldn't explain. It wasn't just that he was handsome—though he was, in a sharp, almost unreal way—but there was something darker beneath it. Something quiet and heavy, like the world itself had softened around his presence.

He wore black, simple but elegant, and yet nothing about him felt ordinary.

His eyes were fixed on me.

Not casually. Not curiously.

But intensely.

Like he had been waiting.

For me.

And strangely… the fear I had carried inside me just moments ago began to fade.

It didn't make sense. It should have made me more nervous, more aware, more cautious. But instead, a calm settled over me, slow and unnatural, like a storm suddenly disappearing without a trace.

I should have been scared of him.

I wasn't.

He stood up.

The movement was slow, controlled, almost deliberate, as if he had all the time in the world. My body tensed without my permission—not in fear, but in awareness—as he began to walk toward me.

Each step felt louder than it should have.

Closer.

Closer.

Until he stopped right in front of me.

I could feel it then—that strange energy surrounding him. Not threatening, not comforting, just… powerful. Like standing too close to something you don't fully understand.

"Why were you running?" he asked.

His voice was low, calm—too calm for someone asking a normal question.

I swallowed, suddenly aware of how close he was. "I… thought something was following me."

For a brief moment, something flickered in his expression.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

His gaze darkened ever so slightly, and when he spoke again, his voice was quieter.

"It was."

My heart skipped.

"What?"

He leaned in just a little, enough that his words felt like a secret meant only for me.

"But it won't anymore."

A chill ran down my spine. "Why?"

His eyes held mine, steady and unreadable.

"Because," he said softly, "you're with me now."

And I don't know why—

I really don't—

but in that moment…

I believed him.

Outside the café window, something shifted in the darkness, like a shadow trying to move closer.

And then, just as suddenly—

it disappeared.

Like it was afraid.

Afraid of him.

And for the first time that night…

I wondered if I had just escaped something worse—

or walked straight into it. 🔥
