Chapter 1 - Stranger At The Door

Valentina POV

The operating room smelled of antiseptic and tension.

"Scalpel."

The nurse placed it in my hand.

Bright lights burned overhead. The heart monitor beeped beside the patient. Students and junior doctors crowded around the table, watching every move.

But I saw only one thing.

The brain.

One wrong cut and this man would never wake up again.

"Vitals are stable," the anesthesiologist said.

I didn't answer.

My hands moved slowly, steady as stone, working millimeter by millimeter around the tumor.

The room held its breath.

Forty minutes later, I stepped back.

"Tumor's out."

Relief swept through the room like a wave.

The assistant surgeon grinned. "Perfect as always, Dr. Moretti."

I peeled off my gloves. "Close him up."

Behind me, Dr. Marcus Hales scoffed loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Golden girl strikes again."

I didn't bother turning around.

"Jealousy causes wrinkles, Dr. Hales," I said calmly. "You should relax."

A few nurses covered their mouths to hide their laughter.

Marcus's jaw tightened, but he stayed quiet.

I walked out without another word.

By the time I finished my paperwork, the sun had already set.

Another long surgery.

Another day of Marcus's comments.

Just another Tuesday.

I grabbed my coat and headed to the parking garage.

Cold night air brushed my face as I drove through the quiet streets.

My apartment sat on the top floor of a sleek high-rise—floor-to-ceiling windows, modern furniture, every detail chosen by me.

This life?

I built it myself.

I locked the door behind me, kicked off my heels, and let the silence settle around me.

First priority: a hot shower.

The water washed away the hospital smell and eased the tight knot in my shoulders.

Afterward, I pulled on soft sweatpants and an old T-shirt. My stomach growled, but I was too tired to cook. So I ordered some Italian takeout.

As I waited, I turned on the coffee machine.

My phone buzzed.

Claire.

Dinner tomorrow? Got gossip you NEED.

I smiled. Claire Morgan—my OB-GYN best friend and professional troublemaker.

If it's not juicy, I'm suing you, I typed.

Trust me. It's juicy, she replied.

I laughed softly and set the phone down. The coffee machine hummed.

Then—ding-dong.

"Finally," I muttered, grabbing my wallet.

I opened the door.

But there was no delivery driver.

Only a tall man in a dark coat standing on my doorstep.

Jet-black hair. Sharp jaw. Calm eyes that studied me like he already knew everything about me.

He smiled slowly.

"Hello, Valentina."

My stomach dropped.

My voice turned cold.

"Who are you? And how do you know my name?"

He chuckled softly. "Your name isn't hard to guess." His gaze swept over my face. "And it's rude to leave family standing outside."

Family?

My hand tightened on the door. " I think you should Leave," I said flatly. "Or I'll call the police."

He didn't move.

His smile faded, replaced by something serious.

"Look, I'm not here to hurt you."

"Then go."

He studied me for a long moment before sighing. "If that's what you want…"

I moved to slam the door.

"Valentina." His voice stayed calm.

"I'm your brother."

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"What?"

"My name is Giovanni Castello," he said quietly. "We share the same mother."

Silence filled the hallway.

Then he added the words that made the ground shift beneath my feet.

"Your mother hid the truth from you."

My fingers tightened on the doorknob.

Giovanni stepped closer. "You're not who you think you are, Valentina."

My chest tightened. Every instinct told me to shut the door.

To lock him out.

To pretend this moment wasn't happening.

But then he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my life.

"You're the heiress to the Castello empire."
