Chapter 17 - Chapter Sixteen - Drone Attack

The city sky had never felt so close, so heavy, so watchful.

Adrian Chukwuma Ikenna Maduako tightened the hood over his head as the safehouse shutters rattled. Lagos was alive outside, horns blaring, music pulsing, the chaos of human life trying to drown out the tension that had wrapped itself around the Rebellion since the Zafiro gala.

Inside, silence hung like smoke.

Kiru's fingers trembled over the keyboard, her eyes fixed on lines of code scrolling like rain down the screen. Toni Wuraola sat beside her, perfectly still, but her jaw was tight enough to crack stone. Amara Okonkwo leaned against the far wall, arms crossed, her shadow long against the flickering light.

"Fallon's gone quiet," Amara said. Her voice was too calm, the kind of calm that meant fury was eating her alive inside. "Too quiet."

Adrian met her gaze. He hadn't slept properly in days. Fallon's hologram from the gala replayed in his head every time he closed his eyes. He wanted to claw it out of his skull. "She's waiting. Watching."

"She's always watching," Toni muttered. "Zafiro's firewall is still alive. Fallon rebuilt the breach in less than twelve hours. We exposed her accounts, but she locked them behind diplomatic immunity and corporate partnerships. She's untouchable for now."

"No one's untouchable," Adrian said. His voice was flat, but the conviction underneath it kept them all from tipping over the edge.

The words had barely left his mouth when the shutters shook again this time not from the street.

A high-pitched whine filled the air, thin and slicing.

Amara's head jerked up. "That's not traffic."

Toni was already moving, yanking the laptop cables free. "They found us."

The ceiling rattled as something scraped against the rooftop. Then the sound came....metal slicing air, a swarm of mechanical wings.

Drones.

Kiru's face went white. "Providence units. Zafiro's newest line."

Before Adrian could respond, the first blast came a concussive thump that shook the safehouse, plaster raining from the ceiling. The window shattered inwards as a black drone, sleek and needle-shaped, shot into the room. Red lights pulsed along its body.

"Down!" Adrian shouted.

The team dove as the drone spat a spray of electrified darts, embedding into the wall where Amara's head had been seconds before. Sparks leapt across the room.

Adrian grabbed the nearest object, a broken chair leg and swung with desperate precision. The drone screeched, metal tearing, and crashed into the floor.

More whines filled the air.

"They're not just here to scare us," Toni hissed, yanking Adrian up by the arm. "They're mapping us. Coordinating."

Amara snatched the remains of the broken drone and hurled it through the doorway as another descended. "Then we don't let them leave alive."

The fight spilled into the narrow stairwell. Drones sliced down through the air, wings clipping the peeling walls. Sparks showered with every hit, the smell of ozone and burning metal choking them.

Adrian ducked another dart, heart pounding, mind racing. Fallon wasn't just sending machines, she was sending a message. I can touch you anywhere.

"Roof access!" Toni barked, shoving Kiru toward the stairwell. "We take high ground or we're cornered."

They burst through the rooftop door into a skyline alive with chaos. The city sprawled beneath them, neon lights and car horns, but above, above was a nightmare.

A dozen drones hovered in formation, red eyes glowing like hungry stars.

Kiru's voice shook. "They're surveillance hybrids. Recording everything. She's going to broadcast this."

Amara cursed under her breath. "Turn her theater into ashes, then." She raised the metal pipe she'd grabbed, her posture like a warrior queen beneath the Lagos sky.

Adrian's chest burned. Fear clawed at him, but something sharper cut through it.

"Toni," he said, loud over the whine of the machines. "Their wings, look at the oscillation. They're synchronized, right?"

Her eyes flicked up, calculating in an instant. "They're using swarm tech. Shared frequency."

"Can you break it?"

"Not here."

"Then reroute it."

Her gaze met his, her lips twitched into something almost like a smile. "On it."

As Toni crouched with her laptop, Adrian moved forward. "Keep them off her."

The rooftop turned into a battlefield. Darts hissed through the air. Amara fought with brutal elegance, pipe slamming drones into sparks. Kiru, half-terrified, swung wildly with a crowbar, managing to clip one clean in half. Adrian dodged, ducked, every movement fueled by a stubborn refusal to fall back into Fallon's grip.

One dart grazed his arm, electricity shooting through his veins. He staggered but forced himself upright. "I'm fine!" he gasped, though his vision swam.

"Adrian...." Amara's voice broke, sharp with fear.

But Toni's voice sliced through. "Hold! Ten more seconds!"

She tapped furiously, screen flashing lines of stolen Providence code. The swarm jittered, lights flickering, wings faltering.

"Five seconds!" Toni shouted.

Adrian grabbed a drone mid-dive, smashing it against the rooftop tiles until sparks exploded across his hands. The machine writhed, then died.

Then, silence.

The swarm froze, wings got suspended mid-beat.

Toni's laptop beeped once. "Redirected."

The drones turned as one pivoting away from the rooftop, their lights flicking from red to white. Then, like a flock of birds, they scattered into the night.

The team stood panting.

Amara's hands shook as she dropped the bent pipe. "She sent them to kill us."

"No," Toni corrected, slamming the laptop shut. Her face was pale, her breathing uneven, but her eyes burned. "She sent them to test us. And to film us. Don't forget that."

Adrian's arm throbbed where the dart had grazed him, the ache deep and electric. He stared at the horizon where the drones had vanished. Every encounter was like theater, every attack a scene in her play.

Kiru collapsed against the wall, trembling. "She knows everything now. How we fight. How we bleed."

Adrian wiped blood from his sleeve, forcing his voice steady. "Then let her know. Let her see. We're not hiding anymore."

The words echoed into the night, bold and reckless, but for the first time since Fallon's hologram, Adrian believed them.

Author's Note

Zafiro Global isn't just Fallon's bank, it's her stage. On the surface, Zafiro is a Lagos-based clean energy conglomerate, sponsoring green projects and youth programs, praised in international circles. But beneath, it launders Providence 2.0's money, funds drone development, and shields Fallon under corporate diplomacy.

This chapter showed Fallon flexing that shield: drones aren't merely weapons they're surveillance, propaganda, proof that Providence 2.0 can reach anyone, anywhere, and make it look like an accident or a spectacle. The Rebellion surviving this attack isn't just survival it's their first public appearance in Fallon's theater of control.
