Chapter 20 - Chapter 19 - Amara's Spotlight

The cameras never scared Amara Okonkwo. They bent to her, lenses bowing like courtiers in a kingdom she'd been born to rule. But this time the lights were sharper, the questions heavier, and the stakes so high the air itself hummed with danger.

The press room smelled of nerves and cologne sweat beneath tailored suits, perfume masking fear. Dozens of journalists packed shoulder to shoulder, their notebooks trembling with eagerness. Screens overhead blazed with the logo of the "Civic Alliance Forum," a manufactured event Amara had engineered overnight. The world thought this was a routine briefing from a coalition of human rights activists. In truth, it was a stage. Her stage.

She adjusted her blazer, emerald silk catching the light like a serpent's skin. Every detail had been rehearsed: the scarlet lip, the diamond pin on her lapel, the way her hair fell in waves that whispered legacy. She wasn't here as Crestmore's fallen queen, nor Adrian's protector, nor Toni's reluctant partner. She was here as Amara Okonkwo the heir to oil empires, the girl with blood money in her veins, weaponizing it for the truth.

And Fallon was watching. Amara could feel it.

She stepped to the podium. The murmurs stilled.

"Providence," she began, voice slicing clean through the tension, "is not dead. You've been told it was dismantled. You've been told its architect disappeared. Lies."

A rustle of shock swarmed the room. Pens scratched. Cameras zoomed closer. Amara leaned in, the queen delivering judgment.

"Providence 2.0 is here. Quiet. Subtle. In your universities, your corporations, your government contracts. Sleeper programs hidden in your apps, surveillance in your streets. You don't see it because you're not supposed to."

The words struck like hammers. She let them hang, daring someone to challenge her.

From the second row, a British journalist raised his hand. "Miss Okonkwo these are serious allegations. Where is your evidence?"

Amara's lips curved, slow and lethal. She pressed a button on the podium. Behind her, the screens lit up with files Toni had decrypted: bank transfers through shell companies in Dubai, memos written in Fallon's coded phrasing, drone schematics signed off by "subsidiaries." Enough breadcrumbs to choke a skeptic.

"This is evidence," she said. "And it's only the beginning."

Gasps. Shouts. Chaos swelling like a tide.

But she wasn't finished.

"You think Providence was just about Crestmore. About children in uniforms and one man's hunger for control. Wrong. Providence was always a prototype. Fallon doesn't need a school anymore. She needs the world."

The words came hotter than she'd planned, anger sparking through her rehearsed calm. Adrian's haunted eyes, Toni's silent tension, the drone that had intercepted them just weeks ago she carried all of it into her voice.

And it worked.

The journalists erupted. Questions piled over each other: "Where is Fallon?" "Who funds this?" "Are you accusing international corporations of collusion?"

Amara didn't flinch. She welcomed the frenzy.

Because this was the plan: unleash chaos, let the world chew on the scraps of truth, and force Fallon out of the shadows. If Providence 2.0 wanted silence, Amara would set the world on fire with noise.

Backstage, the Rebellion watched on a private feed.

Adrian sat in a corner, hands steepled, eyes sharp but restless. He looked thinner since the rescue, edges of paranoia still clinging to him, but right now his gaze never left the screen. Amara's voice carried into the room like thunder.

"She's reckless," Toni muttered, arms folded, tone ice-cold.

"She's effective," Adrian countered.

Kiru, hunched over her laptop, whistled low. "She just dropped half the files we cracked. Do you realize what this means? Governments will scramble. Providence subsidiaries will start covering tracks tonight."

"Exactly," Toni said flatly. "We lose leverage."

Adrian looked at her, his jaw tightening. "We gain fear."

The silence between them thickened. None of them missed the truth: Amara was taking a gamble so bold it could either fracture Fallon's web or paint a target so bright Providence 2.0 would come for her first.

The press conference ended in a storm of flashbulbs and shouted questions. Amara walked out with her head high, ignoring the security guards who begged to escort her. She didn't need protection. She was protection. For Adrian, for Toni, for the truth.

But when she reached the waiting car, she saw Adrian inside.

"Impressive," he said, voice laced with something she couldn't read. Admiration? Worry? Both?

"You're welcome," she shot back, sliding in.

"You've just made yourself the most visible threat to Fallon."

"Good," Amara replied. "Let her look at me. Let her know she's not untouchable."

Adrian studied her. His gaze carried that dangerous softness, the kind that made people trust him, want him, follow him. "And when she comes?"

Amara leaned back, eyes hard as steel. "Then I'll burn louder."

That night, the video of her speech flooded the internet. Hashtags trended. News anchors stumbled over their words. A Nigerian heiress accusing multinationals of collusion with a ghost organization? Scandalous. Addictive. Irresistible.

But somewhere in the noise, a new message slipped through.

Kiru spotted it first: a live feed hijack, less than twenty seconds, just long enough to freeze the room. Fallon's voice, silk over steel.

"Beautiful performance, Amara. The stage suits you. But fire consumes more than enemies, it devours its bearer."

Then static.

The room was silent.

Amara's hands clenched, nails digging into her palm. Fallon wanted her rattled. Fallon wanted her silenced.

Instead, Amara smiled, feral. "Let her watch. Let her burn."

Author's Note:

This chapter marks Amara's moment in the sun a risky gambit where she weaponizes truth as spectacle. But Providence doesn't play fair. By seizing the spotlight, she's drawn Fallon's gaze directly onto herself.
