Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: THE FIRST MOVE

The house was quiet.

Seraphina walked down the grand staircase like nothing had happened, her posture straight, her expression calm. To anyone watching, she was still the perfect wife.

Still the elegant Mrs. Vale.

But inside?

Everything had changed.

Behind her, the door to her room remained closed.

Lila was still inside.

Processing.

Panicking.

Good.

Fear was the beginning.

Seraphina stepped into the dining area just as the maid approached.

"Breakfast is ready, ma'am."

She gave a small nod and took her seat.

Moments later, Adrian walked in.

His eyes immediately found her.

Searching.

Uneasy.

"Seraphina," he said carefully. "About last night—"

"I have a meeting today," she cut in smoothly, picking up her fork.

He paused.

Thrown off.

"A meeting?" he repeated.

"Yes."

She didn't look up.

Didn't explain.

Didn't care.

"With who?" he asked.

Now she looked at him.

Slowly.

"Does it matter?" she asked calmly.

The question hit harder than it should have.

Adrian frowned.

"You're my wife."

Seraphina's lips curved faintly.

"Are you sure about that?" she said softly.

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Don't start this again."

"Start what?" she asked lightly. "The truth?"

His grip on the chair tightened.

"You're overreacting," he said.

That made her smile.

Overreacting.

Of course.

She leaned back slightly, studying him like she was seeing him for the first time.

"You should be careful," she said.

Adrian blinked.

"About what?"

"Underestimating me."

Something in her tone made his chest tighten.

But before he could respond—

Her phone rang.

Seraphina glanced at the screen.

And for the first time that morning…

Her expression softened.

She stood up immediately.

"I'll take this," she said.

And walked away without waiting for a reply.

Adrian watched her go.

Something wasn't right.

Something had shifted.

And he didn't like it.

Not one bit.

Seraphina stepped out onto the balcony before answering the call.

"Father."

"Seraphina," his deep voice came through, calm but firm. "I assume you've made your decision."

Her grip on the phone tightened slightly.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And?" he asked.

Her eyes hardened.

"They betrayed me."

No emotion.

Just fact.

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"I see," her father said quietly.

That was all.

No surprise.

No shock.

Just understanding.

Because he had warned her.

"Do you want me to handle it?" he asked.

Seraphina shook her head, even though he couldn't see her.

"No."

Her voice was steady.

"I want to do it myself."

Silence.

Then—

A small chuckle.

"There's my daughter," he said.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"I'll need your cooperation," she added.

"You have it," he replied immediately. "What do you need?"

Seraphina turned slightly, looking out over the city.

"Start pulling out."

A pause.

"Completely?" he asked.

"Yes."

Her voice didn't waver.

"I want every investment, every partnership, every connection we have with the Vale family… gone."

The weight of her words settled heavily.

That wasn't just revenge.

That was destruction.

"It will raise questions," her father warned.

"Let them ask," she replied.

A slow exhale came from the other end.

"You've changed," he said.

Seraphina's gaze darkened slightly.

"No," she murmured.

"I've just opened my eyes."

Another pause.

Then—

"I'm proud of you," he said quietly.

Something in her chest shifted.

But she pushed it down.

"I'll handle the rest," she said.

"Be careful," he added.

Her lips curved slightly.

"I will."

The call ended.

And just like that—

The first move had been made.

Back inside—

Adrian was still sitting at the table.

Waiting.

Seraphina walked in like nothing had happened.

"I have to leave," she said, grabbing her bag.

"Seraphina—"

She didn't stop.

"Don't wait up."

And then she was gone.

Hours later—

The Vale Corporation offices were in chaos.

"What do you mean they pulled out?!" Adrian's voice echoed through the conference room.

The executives avoided his gaze.

"They terminated the agreement this morning," one of them said nervously. "All of them."

"All?" Adrian snapped.

"Yes, sir."

His hands slammed against the table.

"That's impossible," he growled. "They wouldn't do that without a reason."

But deep down—

He already knew.

Seraphina.

Meanwhile—

Across the city—

Seraphina sat calmly in the backseat of her car.

Watching.

Waiting.

Her phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown Number:

That was fast.

Her lips curved slightly.

Dante.

She typed back:

I don't like wasting time.

A few seconds passed.

Then—

Good. I don't like weak women.

Seraphina's eyes darkened slightly.

Then don't mistake me for one.

There was a pause.

Longer this time.

Then—

I'm starting not to.

Her fingers stilled for a moment.

Then she locked her phone.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Back at the Vale house—

Lila stood in the same spot Seraphina had left her.

Restless.

Uneasy.

Her phone rang.

"Adrian?" she answered quickly.

"Did you talk to her?" he demanded.

Lila hesitated.

"She knows," she said quietly.

Silence.

Then—

A curse.

"This is bad," Adrian muttered.

Lila's chest tightened.

"She didn't react the way I expected," she added.

"What do you mean?"

Lila swallowed.

"She wasn't angry."

That made things worse.

Much worse.

Back in the car—

Seraphina leaned her head back slightly.

Closing her eyes.

For the first time since everything began—

She allowed herself a small breath.

Not relief.

No.

Something else.

Satisfaction.

Because this was only the beginning.

And Adrian?

Lila?

They had no idea what was coming.

Seraphina opened her eyes slowly.

Cold.

Focused.

Unstoppable.
