Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7: THE SNAKE SMILED FIRST

Morning came gently.

Too gently.

Golden sunlight filtered through the tall windows of Seraphina's bedroom, soft and warm, as if the world hadn't shifted overnight.

As if betrayal hadn't carved its way into her life.

But Seraphina knew better.

She stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the cuff of her blouse with slow, deliberate precision. Every movement was controlled. Every expression carefully placed.

Her reflection stared back at her—

Elegant.

Composed.

Untouchable.

No one would look at her and think she had just uncovered the truth about her husband.

No one would guess she had already begun planning his downfall.

Good.

A knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," she said calmly.

A maid stepped inside, bowing her head slightly.

"Ma'am, Miss Lila Carter is here to see you."

Seraphina's fingers paused for the briefest moment.

Then she smiled.

"Of course she is."

Right on time.

"Send her in."

The maid nodded and left quietly.

Seraphina turned back to the mirror, smoothing her hair once more, her expression settling into something soft… almost welcoming.

Almost.

The door opened again.

"Sera!"

Lila Carter walked in like she always did—bright, familiar, effortless.

Her smile was warm.

Her presence comforting.

A perfect illusion.

"I've been calling you since last night," Lila said, stepping closer. "Where did you go? You just disappeared."

Seraphina turned slowly to face her.

"I had something to take care of," she replied smoothly.

Lila frowned slightly, studying her.

"You didn't even tell Adrian. He was worried."

Seraphina almost laughed.

Almost.

"Was he?" she asked softly.

Lila hesitated.

Just for a second.

"Yes," she said quickly. "He didn't sleep properly."

Lies.

Seraphina walked past her toward the sitting area.

"Sit," she said casually.

Lila followed, her eyes now more observant.

Something felt… off.

"What's wrong?" she asked, sitting down. "You're acting strange."

Seraphina poured herself a glass of water, her movements unhurried.

"Am I?" she said lightly.

Lila nodded slowly.

"Yes. You are."

Seraphina took a sip.

Set the glass down.

Then looked at her.

"Maybe I'm just tired of pretending."

The words landed softly.

But heavily.

Lila's chest tightened.

"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice quieter now.

Seraphina walked toward her.

Slowly.

Step by step.

Until she stood directly in front of her.

Close enough to see it—

The flicker of guilt.

"When did it start?" Seraphina asked gently.

Lila froze.

"I don't understand—"

"Don't lie."

The softness in Seraphina's voice made it worse.

Lila stood up quickly, her heart racing.

"You're scaring me," she said with a nervous laugh. "What are you talking about?"

Seraphina didn't move.

Didn't blink.

"Adrian," she said simply.

Silence.

Lila's face went pale.

For a moment—

She said nothing.

And that silence said everything.

Seraphina smiled.

Slow.

Cold.

"I see," she murmured.

"No—Sera, listen—" Lila rushed out. "It's not what you think."

"Then explain it to me," Seraphina said.

No anger.

No raised voice.

Just quiet control.

Lila's throat tightened.

"It just… happened," she said weakly.

Seraphina's eyes darkened slightly.

"Just happened?" she repeated.

Lila stepped forward, desperation creeping in.

"We didn't plan it," she said quickly. "It wasn't supposed to go this far."

But it did.

And they didn't stop.

"How long?" Seraphina asked.

Lila hesitated.

"Months," she admitted.

Months.

Not a mistake.

Not an accident.

A choice.

Repeated.

Seraphina nodded slowly.

"And all this time," she said softly, "you stood beside me… smiling in my face."

Lila's eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't want to hurt you."

That made Seraphina laugh.

A quiet, disbelieving sound.

"You didn't want to hurt me," she repeated.

Then her gaze snapped back.

Sharp.

"And yet you slept with my husband."

Lila flinched.

"I love him," she blurted out.

Silence filled the room.

Seraphina blinked once.

Then again.

And then—

She smiled.

"Of course you do."

Lila's breath shook.

"I didn't mean for it to happen like this."

Seraphina stepped closer.

"You've always wanted what I had," she said quietly.

Lila's eyes widened.

"That's not true—"

"It is," Seraphina cut in. "The attention. The lifestyle. The admiration."

A pause.

"And now… my husband."

Lila looked away.

Because she couldn't deny it.

Seraphina studied her for a moment.

Then stepped back.

And just like that—

The tension shifted.

"I'm not angry," she said calmly.

Lila looked up, confused.

"What?"

Seraphina turned toward the window.

"I'm not angry," she repeated.

Because anger meant she still cared.

And she didn't.

Not anymore.

Relief flooded Lila's face.

"Sera… I'm so sorry," she said, stepping forward. "We can fix this. We can work through it."

"No."

The word cut cleanly.

Lila stopped.

"But I will thank you," Seraphina added.

Lila frowned.

"For what?"

Seraphina turned back slowly.

"For showing me exactly who you are."

A chill ran down Lila's spine.

Something wasn't right.

Something had changed.

"Seraphina…" she whispered.

But Seraphina was already walking past her.

Heading for the door.

"Wait," Lila said quickly. "Where are you going?"

Seraphina paused.

Then glanced back.

"You should leave," she said calmly.

"What?"

"Before things start getting complicated."

Lila's chest tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Seraphina held her gaze.

And there was nothing left in her eyes.

No warmth.

No friendship.

Only something cold.

"You'll find out soon enough."

Then she opened the door.

And walked out.

Leaving Lila standing there—

Alone.

Because deep down…

She understood.

She hadn't just betrayed her best friend.

She had created her worst enemy.
