Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5: Don’t Test Me

Lin An didn't move.

Not immediately.

Her back was still turned toward the room, her fingers slightly tense at her side, but her mind had already gone quiet the moment Shen Wei spoke.

"How long were you planning to ignore what I said?"

His voice was calm. Too calm.

Lin An exhaled slowly before turning around. "I didn't ignore it."

She met his gaze. "I just didn't agree with it."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Shen Wei stood in the doorway, his presence filling the space more than it should have. He didn't step forward, didn't raise his voice, didn't show any obvious anger.

That made it worse.

"You think this is a game," he said.

"I think you're hiding something," she replied.

A pause.

Then he moved.

Not fast. Not aggressive.

But deliberate.

Each step closed the distance between them until the room no longer felt like it had enough space.

Lin An didn't step back.

Not yet.

"If I am," he said quietly, "then you just walked into it."

Her breath tightened slightly.

"Maybe I wanted to," she said.

Something flickered in his eyes.

Not surprise.

Something darker.

"Then you're more reckless than I thought."

"And you're more controlling than you pretend."

Another step.

Now there was barely any distance left between them.

Lin An could feel it.

The shift.

The tension.

The line that neither of them had crossed yet—

but both were standing right on.

"You went upstairs," Shen Wei said.

"I did."

"I told you not to."

"You don't get to tell me what to do."

The words came out steady, but her pulse had already begun to pick up.

For a moment, he didn't respond.

Then his gaze dropped slightly.

To her wrist.

Before she could react—

his hand closed around it.

Firm.

Not painful.

But impossible to ignore.

Lin An froze.

The contact was sudden, solid, real in a way that everything else hadn't been.

Her breath caught.

"What are you doing?" she asked, her voice lower now.

"Stopping you," he said.

His grip didn't tighten.

But it didn't loosen either.

Lin An tried to pull back instinctively.

He didn't let go.

Not forcefully.

Just enough.

Just enough to make it clear—

she wasn't leaving unless he allowed it.

Her eyes lifted to meet his.

"Let go."

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

Something in her chest tightened.

Not just fear.

Something else.

Sharp.

Unsettling.

"You don't get to control me," she said.

"I already am."

The words landed between them, heavy and undeniable.

Lin An's fingers curled slightly, but she didn't try to pull away again.

Because she knew.

He would hold on.

And pushing further might only make it worse.

"Why?" she asked quietly.

Shen Wei's gaze didn't waver.

"Because you don't understand what you're walking into."

"Then explain it."

"No."

Frustration flickered across her expression.

"Then you're not helping."

"I'm not trying to help you," he said.

A pause.

"I'm trying to keep you alive."

Silence.

Her pulse slowed slightly.

But not because she felt safe.

Because she didn't know what to believe.

"If that's true," she said, "then why does it feel like I'm safer outside than I am here?"

His grip shifted slightly.

Not tighter.

But closer.

Pulling her just a fraction forward.

"Because," he said quietly, "you're still thinking of me as the threat."

Her breath hitched.

"Aren't you?"

A pause.

Then—

"If I were," he said, "you wouldn't be standing."

The words were calm.

Matter-of-fact.

And somehow—

more terrifying than anything else he had said.

Lin An held his gaze.

Trying to read him.

Trying to find something solid.

But there was nothing.

Only control.

Only certainty.

Slowly, she spoke.

"In the video… you had a knife."

His expression didn't change.

"And?"

"And you killed me."

Silence fell.

For a moment, it almost felt like the air had stopped moving.

Then—

his grip tightened.

Just slightly.

"Then you should be more careful," he said.

Her heart skipped.

"Careful of what?"

His gaze dropped briefly—

to her lips.

Then back to her eyes.

"Of who you decide to trust."

The distance between them was already too close.

Now it felt intentional.

Deliberate.

Lin An's breath grew uneven.

Not fear.

Not entirely.

Something else.

Something she didn't like.

"You're not answering the question," she said.

"No," he replied.

"I'm not."

Her jaw tightened.

"Then let go."

Another pause.

This time—

longer.

Then slowly—

his fingers loosened.

But just before he let go completely—

he leaned in slightly.

Close enough that she could feel his breath.

"Don't go upstairs again," he said quietly.

It didn't sound like a suggestion.

It sounded like a warning.

Or a promise.

Then he stepped back.

The distance returned.

Just like that.

As if nothing had happened.

Lin An stood there for a moment, her wrist still tingling faintly where he had held her.

Her thoughts were no longer clear.

Not like before.

Not as sharp.

Something had shifted.

Again.

"You're hiding something," she said.

"Yes."

The honesty caught her off guard.

"And you still chose to stay."

Her chest tightened.

That word again.

Chose.

Lin An didn't respond.

Because she didn't have an answer anymore.

Shen Wei turned toward the door.

"Get some rest," he said.

"I doubt you'll be sleeping much after tonight."

He stepped out.

Leaving her alone in the room.

But this time—

the silence felt different.

Heavier.

Closer.

Lin An looked down at her wrist.

Then slowly lifted her gaze toward the mirror.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Still.

Unmoving.

Watching.

A second later—

it blinked.

Lin An froze.

Her breath stopped.

She hadn't—

moved.

The reflection tilted its head.

Just slightly.

As if studying her.

As if—

it wasn't her at all.
