Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: Stay

Lin An didn't leave the room immediately.

After Shen Wei's words, something had shifted. Not outside, not in the house, but in the way she looked at everything. The photo, the room, the silence around them. It all felt like part of something she had walked into without understanding.

She turned slightly, her gaze moving back to him. "So what now?"

Shen Wei didn't answer right away. He stood there, watching her as if measuring something invisible.

"Now," he said calmly, "you stop acting on impulse."

Lin An frowned. "I wasn't acting on impulse."

"You married a stranger in less than a day."

"That wasn't impulsive," she replied. "That was necessary."

A faint pause.

Shen Wei stepped closer, not fast, not threatening, but enough to shift the distance between them. "Then start acting like you want to survive."

Her breath tightened slightly, though her expression didn't change.

"I am."

"No," he said quietly. "You're reacting."

The words landed sharper than expected.

Lin An held his gaze, refusing to look away. "Then tell me what I should do."

Another pause.

For a moment, it almost felt like he wouldn't answer.

Then, simply, "Stay."

She blinked. "Stay?"

"In this house."

Her expression hardened slightly. "You're telling me not to leave."

"Yes."

"That sounds less like advice and more like control."

Shen Wei didn't deny it.

"Outside," he said, "you don't know what's watching you."

"And inside?"

A brief silence.

His gaze didn't shift. "Inside, you know where I am."

The answer wasn't reassuring.

Not even slightly.

Lin An let out a quiet breath, turning her eyes away for a moment before looking back at him. "You're assuming I trust you."

"I'm assuming," he said, "you don't have a better option."

That… was harder to argue with.

The silence stretched between them, heavy but steady.

Lin An crossed her arms loosely, her mind running through everything she knew, everything she didn't, and everything that no longer made sense. If what he said was true, then stepping outside might mean walking straight into whatever had already started.

But staying here…

meant placing herself directly within his reach.

Her eyes dropped briefly to his hand.

The ring was still there.

Black. Simple. Unreadable.

The same ring from the video.

Her fingers curled slightly.

"Three days," she said.

Shen Wei looked at her.

"That's how long I have."

A pause.

"According to you," he replied.

"No," she said quietly. "According to what I saw."

He didn't argue.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Lin An took a step back. "Fine."

The word came easier than she expected.

"I'll stay."

Another pause.

"But that doesn't mean I'm listening to you."

A faint shift in his expression.

"Of course not," he said.

Something about the way he said it made it sound like he didn't believe her.

Or worse—

like he already knew she would.

Lin An turned and walked toward the door.

The moment she reached for the handle—

his voice stopped her.

"Don't go upstairs."

Her hand froze.

Slowly, she turned back. "Why?"

Shen Wei's gaze rested on her, calm as ever.

"There's nothing there you need to see."

That wasn't an answer.

It was a warning.

Lin An held his gaze for a moment longer, then opened the door and stepped out without replying.

The hallway felt quieter than before.

Too quiet.

She walked slowly, her steps measured, her senses sharper now. Every sound seemed clearer, every shadow slightly deeper.

Don't go upstairs.

The words lingered in her mind.

Naturally, that was exactly where her thoughts went.

Her gaze shifted toward the staircase at the end of the hall.

Still.

Silent.

Unremarkable.

And yet—

something about it felt different now.

Lin An exhaled slowly.

"This is stupid," she murmured to herself.

If he wanted to hide something, of course it would be there.

And if she was already trapped in this situation—

then avoiding it wouldn't change anything.

Her feet moved before she could stop herself.

One step.

Then another.

The staircase creaked softly beneath her weight.

She paused.

Listened.

Nothing.

No footsteps. No voice.

No sign that he had followed.

Good.

She continued upward.

Each step felt slower than the last.

The air grew colder.

Or maybe that was just her.

At the top of the stairs, the hallway stretched out in front of her. Several doors. All closed.

No light.

No sound.

Lin An hesitated.

Then moved forward.

The first door.

Locked.

The second.

Locked.

The third—

her fingers rested on the handle.

For a moment, she didn't move.

Then she turned it.

It opened.

The room inside was dark.

Different from the one downstairs.

Less organized.

More… lived in.

Her eyes adjusted slowly.

A desk.

A chair.

Curtains drawn tight.

And on the far wall—

a mirror.

She stepped inside.

Something felt off.

Not wrong.

But—

misaligned.

Her gaze shifted across the room, scanning instinctively.

Then—

she stopped.

Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror.

Pale.

Still.

Watching.

Lin An frowned slightly.

Something wasn't right.

She took a step closer.

The reflection didn't move immediately.

Her breath caught.

A second later—

it followed.

Too late.

Too slow.

Her pulse spiked.

"What…"

A sound behind her.

Soft.

Close.

Lin An turned sharply—

And froze.

Shen Wei stood in the doorway.

Silent.

Watching.

"How long," he asked quietly, "were you planning to ignore what I said?"
