Chapter 7 - Past -1

(jay jay ) pov

Got it 👍 no "getting lost" stuff, and I'll change the ending to a more emotional Keifer–Jay moment, stopping right where she's about to reveal the past (without actually writing it).

Here's the revised ending:

Jay's POV (Rewritten Ending)

Night felt different.

The mansion was quiet, but not the peaceful kind. It was the kind of silence that made your thoughts louder… harder to ignore.

I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at nothing.

Everything that I had been holding in all day… all those forced smiles, fake laughs, "I'm fine" replies—

It was exhausting.

I pressed my palms against my eyes, trying to stop it.

"Don't," I whispered to myself. "Not now."

But it didn't listen.

A tear slipped out anyway.

Then another.

I let out a shaky breath, quickly wiping my face. "Great," I muttered. "Perfect timing."

I stood up, pacing slightly.

"I'm fine," I said again.

My voice cracked.

"…yeah, totally fine."

The door clicked open softly.

I froze.

Of course.

Of course it had to be him.

Keifer stood there, not saying anything at first. His eyes immediately landed on my face… on the tears I clearly didn't hide well enough.

"…you've been saying that all day," he said quietly.

I turned away. "You should knock."

"I did."

"Oh."

Silence.

I wiped my face again, a little more aggressively this time. "It's nothing."

"Jay."

That tone.

Soft, but firm.

The kind that doesn't let you run.

"I said I'm—"

"Don't."

I stopped.

For once… he didn't let me finish it.

I laughed nervously. "Wow, okay. Everyone's against me today."

"I'm not against you."

"Feels like it."

He stepped closer, not too fast, not forcing anything.

"Look at me."

"I'd rather not."

"Yeah, I figured."

That almost made me smile.

Almost.

Another tear slipped out before I could stop it.

"Great," I muttered again. "This is embarrassing."

"It's not."

"It is."

"It's really not."

I shook my head, letting out a breath. "You don't get it."

"Then explain it to me."

"I can't."

"Try."

"I—" I stopped, my voice catching again.

This was stupid.

I wasn't supposed to break like this.

Not here.

Not in front of him.

"I had it under control," I whispered. "I was doing fine."

"You were pretending fine," he corrected gently.

I didn't argue.

Because he wasn't wrong.

That made it worse.

"I just…" I swallowed hard. "I don't want things to change."

"They won't."

"They will."

"Only if you keep doing this alone."

I stayed quiet.

My hands were shaking slightly.

I hated that he could see it.

Hated that he always saw more than I wanted him to.

"I remember," I said suddenly.

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Keifer didn't react immediately.

Didn't interrupt.

Just… waited.

"I remember everything," I added, my voice barely above a whisper.

There.

It was out.

Not everything.

But enough.

"You don't have to say it all at once," he said softly.

"I know."

"Or at all. Not if you're not ready."

I shook my head slightly.

"No… I think I am."

He didn't move.

Didn't rush me.

Just stood there, steady, like he always did.

And somehow—

That made it easier.

I looked at him finally.

Really looked.

"I never forgot," I said. "Not even for a second."

My voice trembled.

"But I didn't tell anyone."

A pause.

Then, quieter—

"There were people… who helped me."

His expression didn't change.

No shock.

No judgment.

Just attention.

"And if I tell you what happened…" I continued, my chest tightening, "everything is going to change."

Keifer stepped a little closer.

FLASH BACK

Rain hits the ground hard.

Not soft. Not calm.

Loud. Relentless. Cold.

Jay's feet slip against the wet road as she runs.

No shoes.

Doesn't matter.

Nothing matters except—

Get away.

Her breathing is uneven, breaking with every step. Her chest burns like it's collapsing from the inside.

Don't stop.

Don't look back.

Don't—

A sharp pain shoots through her arm.

She stumbles.

Her hand slams against the ground.

Cold.

Wet.

Something warmer spreads beneath her fingers.

She freezes.

For a second.

Just one second.

Then she pulls her hand back quickly.

Don't look.

Don't think.

Just move.

She forces herself up again.

Her legs feel weak.

Like they're not hers.

Like they might give out any second.

"Go…" she whispers, voice shaking. "Just go…"

Behind her—

A door slams somewhere far away.

Her entire body reacts.

Flinch.

Breath stops.

Heart spikes.

No.

No no no.

Faster.

She pushes forward again, ignoring the pain, ignoring the way her vision blurs at the edges.

The street is empty.

Dark.

No one.

Good.

No one to see.

No one to stop her.

No one to send her back.

Her steps slow.

Not because she wants to.

Because she has to.

Her body is giving up.

Her breathing turns shallow.

Too fast.

Too wrong.

Her vision tilts.

The world feels… far.

Like she's not fully inside it anymore.

She grabs onto a wall.

It barely helps.

Her fingers slip.

She tries to take another step—

Her knee gives out.

She hits the ground.

Hard.

The rain doesn't stop.

It soaks her completely.

Hair. Clothes. Skin.

Everything.

She tries to get up again.

Her arms shake.

They don't hold.

She falls back down.

"…no…" she whispers.

Not here.

Not now.

Not like this.

Her eyes close for a second.

Just a second—

Footsteps.

Faint.

Getting closer.

Her eyes snap open.

Panic.

Immediate.

No.

No no no.

She tries to move.

Her body refuses.

"Hey—"

A voice.

Not his.

Different.

Jay's breathing picks up again.

She tries to push herself back.

Her hand slips.

Useless.

"Stay back," another voice says.

Sharp. Alert.

"What if it's a setup?"

Setup?

Her mind doesn't process it properly.

"She's hurt," a softer voice cuts in.

Closer now.

Too close.

Jay's vision blurs again.

Shapes move in front of her.

Figures.

More than one.

Great.

Perfect.

Exactly what she didn't need.

"I said stay back," the sharp voice repeats.

"No," another voice says.

Calm.

Firm.

Everything pauses.

Jay's eyes lift slightly.

There—

A boy stands in front.

Not rushing.

Not panicking.

Just… watching her.

Steady.

Too steady.

"We help her," he says.

Simple.

Like there's no other option.

Jay frowns slightly.

Why?

Why would—

Her thoughts break.

Her body sways.

The world tilts again.

Her hands fail her.

She falls forward—

But doesn't hit the ground.

Something catches her.

Strong.

Careful.

Not rough.

Her body tenses instantly.

Don't touch—

"It's okay," the same calm voice says.

Close now.

Too close.

"You're safe."

Safe.

The word feels wrong.

Unfamiliar.

Unreal.

Her breathing stutters.

Her fingers twitch weakly against his arm.

She wants to push away.

She can't.

Her strength is gone.

Completely.

"Hey," a softer voice says near her. "Stay with us, okay?"

Us.

Too many people.

Too many voices.

Too much—

Her head feels heavy.

Her eyes struggle to stay open.

The rain gets quieter.

Or maybe she just can't hear it anymore.

Everything fades.

Slowly.

Piece by piece.

The last thing she sees—

Is that boy.

Still holding her.

Still steady.

Like nothing about this is a problem.

Like she's not a problem.

And then—

Darkness.
