Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Seed Of Doubt

The return to the sect was quiet.

Too quiet.

Unit Seven walked back through the gates under the dim light of early morning, their footsteps uneven, their silence heavy.

No one spoke.

Not after what they had seen.

Not after what they felt.

Zarek walked at the center of the group now.

Not leading.

Not following.

Just… there.

But everything around him felt different.

Lira walked slightly ahead, her expression controlled—but her eyes betrayed her thoughts.

Dain kept glancing sideways, as if measuring something.

The others remained tense.

Because they all remembered.

That moment.

When Zarek had—

Almost lost control.

"…We need to report this," one of the disciples finally said.

The voice was quiet.

Hesitant.

Lira didn't respond immediately.

She stopped walking.

The group stopped with her.

"…Report what?" she asked.

The disciple hesitated.

"…What he did."

Dain scoffed softly.

"…And say what exactly?"

A pause.

"That he killed a beast?"

No one answered.

Because that wasn't the problem.

Lira exhaled slowly.

"…He saved us," she said.

The words were firm.

Clear.

But not entirely convincing.

"…But he also almost lost control," the same disciple replied.

Silence returned.

Zarek stood quietly, listening.

Observing.

Processing.

"…If he had," Lira continued, "…we wouldn't be standing here."

That—

Was the truth.

And it was heavier than anything else.

Dain crossed his arms.

"…So what?" he said. "We just ignore it?"

Lira didn't respond immediately.

Her gaze shifted toward Zarek.

Studying him.

"…No," she said finally.

A pause.

"…We adapt."

Zarek's eyes lifted slightly.

He looked at her.

For a moment—

Something passed between them.

Not trust.

Not yet.

But something else.

"…You're still one of us," Lira added.

Zarek didn't respond.

But he didn't reject the statement either.

Behind them, unnoticed—

A shadow watched from the distant training grounds.

Silent.

Still.

And observing everything.

Later that day—

Training resumed.

But it wasn't the same.

The formation was tighter.

More cautious.

And—

More distant.

Zarek noticed it immediately.

They were adjusting.

Not away from him.

But around him.

Lira gave instructions.

Dain followed with controlled precision.

The others executed their roles.

But every movement—

Every adjustment—

Was made with awareness of Zarek.

He didn't interfere.

Didn't force himself in.

He simply moved when needed.

No more.

No less.

But something unexpected happened.

As the training continued—

Zarek started noticing patterns.

Not just in their movements—

But in their reactions.

Who hesitated.

Who hesitated less.

Who looked at him longer than necessary.

Small details.

But important ones.

"…They're not rejecting me," he thought.

"…They're adjusting to me."

The system stirred faintly.

[Behavioral Synchronization Increasing]

Zarek's eyes darkened slightly.

"…So this is how they try to control it."

Through acceptance.

Through integration.

Through constant observation.

Then—

A voice broke through his thoughts.

"…You're overthinking."

Zarek looked up.

Lira stood a few steps away.

Watching him.

"…You're not the only one trying to adapt," she said.

A pause.

"…We all are."

Zarek studied her.

Her tone was different now.

Less defensive.

More… honest.

"…Why?" he asked.

Lira didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…Because we don't have a choice."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…If you're dangerous…"

A pause.

"…Then we need to learn how to stand next to you."

That—

Was the first real acknowledgment.

Not fear.

Not rejection.

But necessity.

Zarek said nothing.

But internally—

Something shifted.

The system reacted.

[Social Integration Progress: 63%]

[Stability Under Observation Increasing]

He exhaled slowly.

"…Understood."

But not everyone shared the same mindset.

Across the training ground—

Dain stopped mid-motion.

His eyes locked onto Zarek.

"…Hey."

Zarek turned.

Dain walked toward him.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"…I don't trust you."

The words were direct.

No hesitation.

The group froze.

Even Lira didn't interrupt.

Dain stopped a few steps away.

"…But I don't think you're lying either."

A pause.

"…Which is worse."

Zarek met his gaze.

Unshaken.

"…Then watch me," Zarek said.

The answer was simple.

Direct.

Dain smirked slightly.

"…I plan to."

The tension didn't break.

But it changed.

From silent resistance—

To active scrutiny.

And that—

Was far more dangerous.

Because now—

Everyone was watching.

Not just what Zarek did.

But what he might become.

Above—

Hidden in the shadows—

An elder spoke quietly.

"…They're starting to see him differently."

Rovan's gaze remained fixed.

"…Good."

The elder turned slightly.

"…Good?"

Rovan nodded once.

"…Fear alone won't stop him."

A pause.

"…Understanding might."

Or…

It might not.

Zarek stood still among the others.

The air around him—

No longer completely hostile.

But not safe either.

And somewhere deep inside—

Something stirred again.

Not hunger.

Not power.

But awareness.

Because the game had changed.

And now—

He was no longer being tested alone.

He was being watched.

By everyone.
