Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: the weight Of Decision

Deep within the Abyssal Devour Sect, far beyond the reach of outer disciples and training grounds, there existed a hall that few were permitted to enter.

It was not grand.

There were no decorations, no symbols of power or status displayed openly. The stone walls were bare, the air still, and the silence within carried a weight that pressed against the senses.

This was where decisions were made.

Seven figures sat within the chamber.

Each one an elder.

Each one powerful enough to shape the fate of the sect.

At the center sat the First Elder, his eyes closed, his presence calm yet suffocating. He had not spoken since the meeting began.

But the others had.

"…This cannot continue," one elder said, his voice sharp, controlled.

Another leaned forward slightly.

"You've said that before. Yet here we are."

The first elder's gaze hardened.

"And I'll say it again. That boy is unstable."

"Unstable?" a third elder repeated. "Or evolving?"

Silence followed.

The distinction mattered.

Because one implied danger.

The other—

Opportunity.

Rovan stood near the edge of the chamber, as he always did. He was not seated among them, but neither was he excluded. His role was different.

Observer.

Instructor.

Witness.

"…He is both," Rovan said finally.

All eyes turned toward him.

"He is unstable," Rovan continued, "because his power does not follow established laws. But he is evolving because he adapts faster than any of us anticipated."

A pause.

"And that is precisely why he is dangerous," the first elder said.

"Or valuable," another countered.

The room split again.

This had become a pattern.

Those who feared Zarek.

And those who saw potential.

The First Elder finally opened his eyes.

The room fell silent instantly.

"…Enough."

His voice was calm.

But absolute.

"This is no longer a matter of opinion."

The elders straightened slightly.

"We have observed the boy long enough," he continued. "We have tested him, restricted him, and placed him among others."

A brief pause.

"And yet… he continues to grow."

No one argued.

Because it was true.

The suppression ring had not stopped him.

The unit integration had not destabilized him.

The mission had not broken him.

If anything—

He had improved.

"…That alone is reason for concern," one elder said.

"…Or reason for escalation," another replied.

The First Elder raised a hand slightly.

Silence returned.

"…We will not eliminate him."

The words settled heavily in the chamber.

The first elder frowned.

"…You're certain?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"…Because killing him now would mean we have learned nothing."

That—

Shifted the room.

"…Then what do you propose?" Rovan asked.

The First Elder's gaze shifted slightly.

"…We push him further."

The tension in the room increased.

"Further?" one elder repeated.

"Yes."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"If his power is truly beyond our understanding… then we must force it to reveal itself."

A pause.

"Not in controlled conditions."

Another pause.

"But under pressure."

Rovan's gaze sharpened.

"…You intend to provoke him."

The First Elder did not deny it.

"…We intend to test his limits."

Silence followed.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

If Zarek failed—

He would lose control.

And if he lost control—

The outcome would decide everything.

"…And if he succeeds?" one elder asked.

The First Elder leaned back slightly.

"…Then we will have something far more valuable than we expected."

Far above the chamber—

In the quiet courtyard—

Zarek stood alone once more.

The night air moved gently around him, but his focus remained inward.

He could feel it again.

That subtle shift.

The change within him.

Not just growth—

But something deeper.

The system pulsed faintly.

[Threshold Nearing Completion]

[Evolution State: Unstable]

Zarek exhaled slowly.

"…Still not enough," he murmured.

He raised his hand slightly, watching as energy gathered faintly around his palm.

Controlled.

But barely.

Footsteps approached.

This time—

More than one.

Zarek lowered his hand and turned.

Lira stood there.

Dain beside her.

And behind them—

The rest of Unit Seven.

Their expressions were serious.

"…We've been assigned another mission," Lira said.

Zarek's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So soon?"

Dain nodded.

"…And it's not the same as before."

A pause.

"…This one's deeper."

Zarek understood immediately.

This wasn't coincidence.

This was intention.

"…When do we leave?" he asked.

Lira didn't hesitate.

"…Now."

The forest welcomed them once more.

But this time—

It felt different.

Heavier.

Darker.

The deeper they went, the more the air seemed to resist them.

Zarek walked silently, his senses sharper than before.

Something was wrong.

Not just the environment.

But the energy itself.

The system reacted.

[Warning]

[High Concentration of Corrupted Energy Detected]

Zarek's eyes darkened.

"…So this is it," he thought.

Ahead—

Something moved.

Not one presence.

Multiple.

The group stopped.

Lira raised her hand.

"…Stay sharp."

The shadows shifted.

And then—

They appeared.

Three beasts.

Larger than before.

More unstable.

Their bodies pulsed with corrupted energy, their movements erratic, their eyes glowing with something unnatural.

"…This isn't normal," one of the team whispered.

No.

It wasn't.

The beasts didn't hesitate.

They attacked.

The forest exploded into motion.

Unit Seven reacted instantly.

But this time—

It was different.

The pressure was higher.

The movements faster.

And the danger—

Real.

Zarek stepped forward.

The ring pulsed.

Suppressing.

Restraining.

But the energy around him—

Responded.

Wild.

Chaotic.

"…Come," Zarek whispered.

Because deep down—

He understood something now.

This wasn't just a mission.

It was a test.

And whether he passed—

Or failed—

Would decide everything.
