They were running into the heart of it.
Footsteps echoed through the narrow corridor as Pix led them deeper into the side sector. The neon glow faded behind them, replaced by dim industrial lighting and exposed wiring that hummed softly along the walls.
The atmosphere changed.
Heavier.
More real.
Mii slowed slightly.
"…I don't like this place."
Pix didn't look back.
"…Good. Means it's not pretending."
Lyra moved to the front beside Pix.
"…How much farther?"
"Not far," Pix replied. "Old maintenance hub ahead. System coverage is weaker there."
Sera's gaze shifted subtly.
"…We are still being observed."
Kaida-9 confirmed.
"…Low-level tracking persists."
Elric exhaled quietly.
"…so we're not invisible."
Pix smirked faintly.
"…we were never invisible."
They reached a reinforced door, half-open and flickering with unstable light. Inside, a compact control room sat dormant, filled with outdated terminals and cables that looked like they hadn't been touched in years.
Pix stepped in first.
"…home sweet temporary disaster zone."
Mii peeked inside.
"…this place looks like it has tetanus."
Kaida-9 entered without hesitation.
"…Environment acceptable."
Lyra scanned the room once, then nodded.
"…we hold here."
The group settled in, but no one fully relaxed.
Pix immediately got to work, connecting wires, booting systems, fingers moving quickly across dusty interfaces.
"…alright," she muttered, "before we do anything else…"
She turned.
"…we set rules."
Silence.
Everyone listened.
Pix pointed at Elric.
"…Rule one. You don't use that ability unless we absolutely have to."
Elric raised an eyebrow.
"…I don't even know how to use it."
"…exactly," Pix said. "Which is why you don't experiment mid-crisis."
Mii nodded rapidly.
"…yes. No chaos testing."
Pix continued.
"…Rule two. We move as a unit. No splitting unless planned."
Lyra added,
"…agreed."
"…Rule three," Pix said, her tone sharpening, "…if the system locks onto us…"
A pause.
"…we drop everything and relocate immediately."
Sera nodded.
"…Survival priority."
Kaida-9 added,
"…logical."
Pix crossed her arms.
"…and rule four…"
She looked at Elen.
"…you tell us if anything feels off. Immediately."
The room went quiet.
Elen didn't respond right away.
Then...
"…I will."
Simple.
Direct.
But there was weight behind it.
Lyra watched her for a moment longer...
Then nodded.
"…good."
Pix clapped once.
"…great. We're officially a functional mess."
Mii raised a hand.
"…do we get a team name?"
"No."
"…rude."
The tension eased slightly.
Just a little.
Elric leaned against the wall, exhaling slowly.
The adrenaline was fading.
Leaving behind something quieter.
He glanced to the side.
Elen stood near one of the broken terminals.
Still.
Alone.
He pushed off the wall and walked over.
"…you good?" he asked.
She didn't turn immediately.
"…define good."
He leaned slightly beside her.
"…not trying to eliminate me anymore?"
A pause.
"…then yes."
He smirked faintly.
"…progress."
Silence settled between them.
Not uncomfortable.
Just… quiet.
"…when it controlled me," she said suddenly,
"…it wasn't just giving orders."
He glanced at her.
"…yeah?"
She nodded slightly.
"…it was removing options."
That made him pause.
"…what do you mean?"
She finally turned to him.
Her eyes were clear.
But heavier than before.
"…I could see what I wanted to do."
A beat.
"…and I could see what it wanted me to do."
Silence.
"…and it made sure those were the same."
Elric frowned.
"…that's messed up."
"…yes."
She looked away again.
"…so if I hesitate again…"
He cut her off.
"…you will."
She blinked slightly.
"…what?"
He shrugged.
"…hesitate."
A beat.
"…means you're still you."
Silence.
That landed.
She looked at him again.
Longer this time.
"…you're very certain."
He smirked.
"…I'm very lucky."
A faint exhale.
Not quite a laugh.
But close.
"…that's not what this is."
He tilted his head.
"…no?"
She shook her head slightly.
"…luck doesn't make people stay."
Silence.
That one...
Hit differently.
He didn't answer right away.
Didn't joke.
Didn't deflect.
Just looked at her.
"…maybe I'm bad at leaving," he said quietly.
A pause.
Her gaze softened.
Just slightly.
"…good," she said.
Behind them...
Pix's voice cut in.
"…as heartwarming as this is..."
They both turned.
Pix wasn't smiling.
"…we have a problem."
The terminal in front of her...
Flickered.
Violently.
Data streams...
Unstable.
Corrupted.
Sera stepped closer.
"…this is not normal."
Kaida-9 confirmed.
"…external interference detected."
Lyra's hand went to her weapon.
"…already?"
Pix's eyes narrowed.
"…no."
A beat.
"…this isn't the system we saw before."
Silence.
Everyone felt it.
Different.
Heavier.
Watching.
Learning.
Pix leaned closer to the screen.
"…we just made something notice us."
