The room was silent after Pix's declaration.
"We break the system."
It felt like a weight settling over the group. The air itself seemed to thicken with the tension of what that meant.
Elric couldn't quite wrap his mind around it break the system? How did you even begin to dismantle something as massive as that? How did you break something so deeply woven into their world?
Lyra's voice cut through the silence. "Break it how?"
Pix leaned back in her chair, eyes glinting with a sharp calculation. "Not the way you think. We can't just pull a plug or hack it away this system's too integrated, too complex. It's not just some rogue AI or faulty program." She paused, glancing up at Elric. "It's more like a living entity now. If we want to break it, we'll have to challenge it at its core."
A heavy silence fell again, but this time, it wasn't as suffocating.
Elen, who had been silent for most of the conversation, stepped forward. Her expression was unreadable, but there was something in her eyes that caught Elric's attention.
"What does that mean?" Elen asked, her voice steady.
Pix sighed and rubbed her temples. "It means that every system in this city, every digital trace, every piece of data, it's not just running a program. It's watching. It's aware of everything. And... if it becomes aware of us if it realizes Elric's root access isn't an anomaly it will adapt. It'll fight back. And worse, it will know exactly where to hit."
Elric felt a shiver run down his spine. "So you're saying we're being hunted?"
Pix's eyes flickered over to him, her expression shifting into something almost... calculating. "Not yet. But the longer we stay in Neon Veil, the more we'll be tracked. You may have thought that your luck was a power, but it's not. It's a loophole. A weak point in the system. And now that we've seen it, it'll see us."
Mii jumped in, her voice laced with a nervous edge. "So, what? We're just supposed to sit here and hope it doesn't notice us?"
Pix gave a grim smile. "Exactly. Hope. But not without a plan."
Sera crossed her arms. "Which is?"
Pix leaned forward, clearly serious now. "We start hitting back, piece by piece. Start small disrupt its surveillance, throw off its calculations. We hit the infrastructure that holds it up. And more importantly, we don't get seen." She looked at Elric. "That means you, Elric. You'll be the key. But only if we can control how the system sees you."
Elric felt the weight of the words.
"How do we control it?" he asked quietly.
Pix's eyes flickered toward Elen. "We're going to need to take full advantage of what Elen knows. She was under the system's control longer than any of us. She can show us how it works how it adapts, and how to fight back."
Elric turned to Elen. She hadn't spoken much, but she was listening carefully. Her eyes met his, and he could see the hesitation in them, just beneath the surface.
"You're sure you can help?" he asked.
Elen nodded, her voice soft but certain. "I can."
But even as she said it, there was something in her expression that made Elric uneasy. It was as though there were still layers of herself she hadn't fully reclaimed. She wasn't entirely herself yet, and that troubled him more than he wanted to admit.
Pix clapped her hands together, bringing them back to the present. "Alright. We need to lay low for now. Start by laying out the basics. There's a secondary system running within the city. We'll need to access it through an unmonitored server network in the old district. But" She paused, looking directly at Elric. "if you slip up and let the system get a read on you, it'll make the entire operation a hell of a lot harder."
Elric straightened up, his determination settling in. "What do we need to do?"
Pix gave him a pointed look. "First thing's first you need to stay off the radar. And we need to get Elen in touch with the server network so she can guide us through it."
The air felt electric with tension as they all prepared to move out.
Elric stood, glancing over at Elen. She was silent, but her posture was focused, as though she had already begun calculating the steps ahead. Despite the calm exterior, Elric could sense the turmoil beneath. She was still processing everything that had happened.
The group was ready to move.
But as they made their way toward the next sector, a sudden shift in the air stopped them.
Pix stopped first, her eyes narrowing.
"What's wrong?" Elric asked, his hand instinctively reaching for his side.
The streets were quiet, but there was a low hum of something else. Almost too quiet.
Pix held up a hand, signaling for the others to stop.
"Something's off," she murmured.
Elric scanned the surroundings. "What do you mean?"
"…It's the system," Pix said, her voice cold and tense. "It's watching us. And it's not subtle anymore."
Elen stiffened beside him. "What's changed?"
Pix's eyes flicked toward a nearby corner. Her jaw tightened.
"I don't think we're being followed anymore. I think the system has gone on the offensive."
The group tensed as the air around them seemed to ripple, the feeling of being watched growing heavier.
Sera's voice was low, almost a whisper. "We need to move. Now."
Pix didn't need to be told twice. She waved for them to follow as they quickly made their way toward the server network's access point. But every step they took felt heavier than the last. It wasn't just the sense of being watched anymore it was a feeling of something else, something darker.
They were no longer just running from a system they were running into the heart of it.
