Chapter 6 - CHAPTER FIVE:THE GIRL BEHIND THE HALO

Some killers wear gloves. Others wear innocence. Angel wore it perfectly.

Some good news doesn't arrive like a blessing sometimes. It arrives like a warning.

In the quiet heart of Abuja, the Vincent family looked like the definition of perfection. A respected doctor. A graceful wife. A brilliant son preparing for his final year.

Mr Vincent stepped into the living room with exhaustion hanging heavily on his shoulders. He dropped his briefcase beside the couch and loosened his tie slowly.

"Welcome back," Mrs Vincent said warmly from the dinning table as she arranged dinner plates.

He smiled faintly. But something about his expression felt wrong tonight.

"I got transferred"

Mrs Vincent paused instantly. "Transferred?"

She repeated. "To where?"

"To Lagos." Silence swallowed the room. "That's.... sudden."

Mr Vincent nodded. "The hospital offered me a higher position. Better opportunities too.. We'll be relocating soon."

At that exact moment, Bryan descended the staircase, catching the final part of the conversation.

"Relocating?" His brows furrowed sharply.

"To Lagos?

His father turned calmly. "Yes, it's best for us."

Bryan let out a dry laugh. "Best for who?"

"Bryan" his mother started carefully.

"No seriously." His voice rose. "I'm in my final year. My exams are close My entire life it's here and suddenly we're leaving?"

"That's easy for you to say." He snapped.

"You're not the one losing everything familiar."

Mr Vincent expressions hardened. "You're acting childish. This move is important."

"I don't want a fresh start!" Bryan exploded.

"I want stability. I want my life to remain normal!"

Mrs Vincent stepped forward. "This discussion is over. The transfer has already been approved. We leave in two weeks."

He stared at them in disbelief. "Two weeks...?"

His father softened slightly. "You'll make new friends. You'll adjust."

Bryan said nothing after that. He simply turned and walked away.

But deep inside him, something about this move felt wrong.

Not like a beginning. Like an ending. And Bryan didn't know it yet. But Lagos was about to ruin lives.

The girls hostel was alive with noise. Laughter echoed through the hallways. Bathroom doors slammed repeatedly. The scent of perfume, soap and late night gossip filled the air.

But on one bed, Angel sat completely still. Her phone rested against her ear while her fingers tightened around it.

"Mr Kelvin..."

"Yes dear?" His voice was calm and patient.

Angel lowered her gaze.

"I can't stay in the school dormitory anymore." A pause.

"After Mira's death....I don't feel safe here."

Silence lingered briefly from the other side of the call.

" You're in your final year," Mr Kelvin replied carefully. "It's better you stay in the hostel. Nothing will happen to you."

Angel's grip tightened around the phone. "Please don't say that," she whispered softly.

Her voice trembled just enough to sound believable. "I'm scared. What if the same person comes for me next?"

Another silence followed. Then finally.

"I'll arrange an apartment for you" Angel eyes flickered faintly. " You will?

"Yes. Somewhere close to school. " He sighed quietly. "I'll make sure you're comfortable. Even hire a nanny if necessary."

A grateful smile touched Angel's lips.

"Thank you so much sir. God will reward your kindness."

"You're welcome dear. Take care of yourself." The call ended.

Angel slowly leaned back against the mattress, staring at the ceiling. Then her lips curved upward. Not warmly. Not innocently.

As though she had just won something. She closed her eyes and drifted into sleep.

The next morning, the atmosphere around school had changed completely. Not physically but emotionally.

Mira's death lingered across the school like smoke after fire whispers followed every hallway. Every classroom, every corner.

The police returned again. Security footage replayed endlessly across the monitor.

Mira drinking juice. She supposedly brought from home. Students moving normally. Teachers entering class. Everything looked normal.

Until officer Yemi noticed something strange. "Pause that." The footage froze.

Angel and Favour were both missing during the exact timeline Mira collapsed.

Suspicious. But moments later, another camera contradicted everything.

Angel appeared inside the staffroom assisting the Economics teacher. Meanwhile, Favour had been sent out of class for failing an assignment.

Perfect timing. Perfect alibs. Too perfect. Officer Yemi narrowed his eyes. Then he saw it.

A section of the footage was missing completely.

Deleted. No access logs. No explanation.

"This doesn't make sense," he muttered.

His partner leaned closer to the screen.

"It does...if someone knows exactly how to disappear without trace."

Later that afternoon, Angel sat inside the Interrogation room.

Calm, elegant and composed.

Her hands rested neatly on her lap while innocence softened every feature on her face.

Officer Yemi studied her carefully. "Where were you during lecture hours that day?"

"In the staffroom," Angel answered softly. "I was helping the Economics teacher."

"Can anyone confirm that?"

"Yes" no hesitating, no panic and no fear. She looked like someone terrified of being falsely accused. Not someone capable of murder.

And somehow, that made her even more terrifying. Officer Yemi leaned back slowly.

"I still believe you know something." Angel tilted her head slightly.

"Maybe, you're searching in the wrong place." Silence settled between them heavily between them.

"The real culprit could be standing right in front of you.... hiding in plain sight." The officers exchanged glances.

"May I return to class now? She asked politely. "You may go." Angel stood gracefully. " But trust me" he continued.

"We'll find whoever did this."

A faint smile crossed Angel's lips. "I hope you do." Then she walked out calmly like innocence it self.

Few days later.

Another tragedy the school. Elisa hit by runaway car.

The news spread across the school instantly. Some students claimed she died on the spot

Others whispered she was still breathing when the ambulance arrived. No one knew the truth.

Later that evening, Angel received the keys to her new apartment.

The moment she stepped inside, excitement flickered across her face. Her fingers across the furniture slowly.

The walls, the curtains , the bed. A small smile formed.

"I can't believe this belongs to me.... "She fell backward on the mattress. Then suddenly a memory surfaced.

FLASHBACK

The expressway buzzed with movement. Cars sped recklessly beneath the evening lights while impatient horns echoed endlessly.

Elisa stood near the roadside waiting for transportation. Then Angel appeared beside her silently. Almost like a ghost.

"Have you ever wondered what really killed Mira?" She asked softly.

Elisa frowned immediately. "Mind your business." Her expression hardened.

"Just because Mira is dead doesn't mean we'll ever be friends." A brief silence followed.

Then Angel spoke again. "I killed her. Elisa froze completely. "It was my plan from the beginning."

Angel never flinched. "I poisoned her," she continued calmly. "And you're next."

Fear flashed across Elisa face immediately.

"I'm reporting you to the principal !"

Everything happened too fast. Headlights. Brakes screeching violently. A body crashing against asphalt.

Blood spreading across the highway. Screams erupting everywhere.

But Angel simply stood there smiling.

Watching. Waiting. Then quietly walked away.

PRESENT

Angel opened her eyes slowly. A dark smile spread across her lips. "I warned them...."

Her voice dropped into a whisper. "One after another... they'll all pay." She stood and walked towards the wardrobe pulling out her neatly ironed uniform.

Tomorrow she would return looking different. More beautiful, confident and untouchable.

Then suddenly her phone rang. It was Halima.

She answered immediately.

"Elisa is alive."

Silence.

Angel's expression shattered instantly.

"What?"
